A Singaporean pop star has released a heartbreaking music video for his cover of a Lady Gaga hit.

Duane Ho, 23, who shot to fame through Singapore Idol in 2009 recently covered Lady Gaga’s Million Reasons.

Now he has produced a provocative music video with aspiring filmmaker Kieran Cheang to go with his version of the song.

It tells the story of a guy with an abusive boyfriend.

The clip aims to raise awareness about rape in same-sex relationships.

‘The LGBT scene in Singapore is something that still isn’t widely or openly portrayed in media and from a personal standpoint, just because we don’t see or hear these stories doesn’t mean they cease to exist,’ Ho told Dear Straight People.

‘I hope for a conversation to begin between people and within oneself,

‘To discover and acknowledge why we react the way we do and possibly let go of past hurt in order to truly be set free.’

Regardless of the performance by the singer or the actors portraying the couple, the video sends a powerful message about abusive relationships. Very often we think only of women being in abusive relationships, but there are men too who are in abusive relationships straight and gay. Men can be victims too of domestic violence. I.e.a women can slap her bf or scratch him during a heated argument. Same for gay men. Partners may choke the other person, threaten them etc.

Sure, the video can be more polished but the message is simple. Abusive relations exists.

Love.

The Stockholm Syndrome further adds complication into an abusive relationship...

The voice is so-so. The actors are ugly. The sex scene is irrelevant and out of story. Such a waste

The voice is alright, the filmography is decent but yeah, the actors aren't the nicest to look at.

You both are exactly the reason why there can never be peace in this community.

Instead of digging out the message the music video is portraying, you let your superficiality and ignorance get the better of you.

So only good-looking guys will have to be used to portray same-sex relationships in having abusive relationships?

Right. Your priorities are all over the place.

Here's a reality check: Your priorities don't have to be my priorities. Quite frankly, I don't care much for the message of the music video not because it's unimportant but because the entire project feels like an exercise of self-indulgence.

Self-indulgent or not, I am not seeing the issue of domestic abuse in the LGBT community highlighted in any other local music videos. So, I am glad someone made video highlighting the issue. The truth is very often people who are in abusive relationships don't talk about it. It could be someone you know, and you don't see the bruises both physically and emotionally.

I liked the ambience at the start, then it got incredibly boring; replaced the guitar with a piano, bland harmonies, the ones with the violin were especially jarring. Obviously can't sing better than Gaga yet sings the song the same way. Not sure what he was trying to accomplish, there's absolutely no reason to listen to his version.

So the sepia toned scenes are flashbacks, and the current abusive boyfriend was raped in the past?

Some questions:

1) How come these kids have a place of their own?

2) Who the hell rapes someone against a see-through roadside barricade facing the street?

3) Did the producers see a storm approaching, called Duane and say, "Be at Yishun Dam in 5 mins, we're gonna shoot something really dramatic with lighting in the distance!" Or was that added during post production?

The concept of the video reinforces that forced sexual encounters aka RAPE is prevalent amongst the gays. The video is trying to be as "noir" as possible.  (go google film noir/noire)

Mastiff, sorry but you are too critical for the maiden effort of date-rape/BF-rape.  Cut some slack and do not over-analyse things..

Just to give you some answers..

1.  Why not ..they can rent a place

2.  It shows that regardless of the place, the BF forced the victim to have sex, much to the unwillingness of the bottom.  He was "overpowered" and had to endure the pain.

3.  To me, it is the feeling of helplessness..浓烈的无助感

Overall, this video is at least worth a second viewing..

Why are so many people hating on this work so much, I found it really pleasing and wholesome to have such works representing our community in a professional sense. The message is there and it resonates deeply. Who cares if he has a bad personality or ugly etc, the main take away is the video itself as a piece of work. Tsk don't understand the people here,

Thank you to the artiste & production team for highlighting the very taboo issue of same-sex partner violence in the music video. It is an especially important message for gay & bisexual men, where there is so much to deal with: the threatening reality of legal criminalisation under section 377A; peer pressure to "act straight"; social pressure to "be strong" & "be a man"; fear of being judged or shamed for being the victim of violence from a male partner.

It's not easy for both the victim and perpetrator of same-sex partner violence, as it is surrounded by so much pressure, shame & fear.

Yes, the sepia scene are flashbacks and yes the main actor (the abusive one) was raped in the past thus turned abusive.

I think it is a good effort, but I felt that the story/editing is a little hard to follow. Main reason being they tried to cover 2 major topics (rape and abusive partners). A good story usually only have one main subject matters.

I agree with you that they should have choosen a better place for the rape scene. However, regarding the place and the storm, I think you are too critical.

This TW web series is quite nice with good acting.

Total 4 episodes, the 2nd is just out today.

The Top is a Malaysian actor who also had a gay (bottom) role in the thriller "Tenant Downstair".

I've just finished watching season 1. I liked it!!

Finally, there's a local drama that I can identify with, instead of the usual Mediacorp drama where there's always at least one bitchy, emotionally-needy, attention-seeking, quarrelsome, feminist girl who leeches on to the male lead.

I can understand a lot of the emotions felt by Rai and Ridzwan. Ridzwan's very hot, btw!!  :D

Thanks again for sharing!

Hope there'll be a season two soon!
