I have been using ASUS for my normal day to day work, and MacBook for my photos/videos editing.

 

I think ASUS is realiable and doesn't really slow down too much as compared to brands like Dell or Lenovo. MacBook is overpriced and I wouldn't recommend it unless you definitely have a need for it.

go to FUNAN to buy the original ones. sim lim sq.. the retailer see people cut people (some are carrot cakes).. some shops are the same bosses but different tactics of selling & mostly the equipment in sim lim sq are 2nd hand. re-modelled equipments.

Personally, I use MacBooks for everything. And I game on consoles these days... don't have the energy or time to build a PC.

 

But, I would recommend Asus, Dell or Surface Pro series if you want to use Windows for your daily needs. For gaming, get a desktop though.

I used ASUS in my whole life, each PC / Laptop always lasted me at least 4 to 6 years and when I switch (Same ASUS) is due to wanting a higher performance computer.

 

Still using ASUS now. Tried Mac and having a Surface Laptop 4 now, not too bad and I don't use laptop for gaming, laptop for school and work only.

While brands have some well-deserved recognition for creating decent products, we should bear in mind that buying a laptop should suit what we need it for- rather than focus the brand itself. 

 

If you need a laptop for day-to-day use, a sub-$1000 laptop from any brand works fine. Even better, grab a second-hand laptop that was released 1-2 years ago at a bargain. 

 

But if you need it for gaming or something more intense, look into reviews that dive into specific models and whether the computer suits your needs. In this day and age, brand reputation doesn't necessarily deliver what they promise- research and knowledge is king in this day and age where competition between all these brands is at an all-time high.

Been using it for close to 8-9 years before it died on me. (school/gaming/work)
One of the reasons is that the repair centre is way more centralized than some (jurong)
 

 

I think other brands that really last are HP or Lenovo (see these two brands alot for work) and they serve their purpose!

I had ThinkPad, Toshiba, Acer, Lenovo and Asus.

Besides Acer, all others have been good thus far.

However, I have friends who swear by Acer while some stay away from Lenovo and Asus.

Boils down to what one need in a laptop. I do not go for the highest spec; something decent enough for my daily use.

Nowadays, any electronic devices that can last me a good 5 years or more, I consider it as a very fortunate case already. 😅

It all boils down to consumer luck. Your experience may vary with others from brand to brand but regardless stick to brands with a longer manufacturer warranty. I believe ASUS have like two years. If they have the confidence to throw you a warranty for two years, at the very least you are covered for two whole years. Stick to which ever brand fits your needs and budget there after.

I was charging it one day when it emitted smoke! Yes, sounds dramatic, I know. Haha...

Luckily, I was using it also and managed to quickly off the charger and unplug. Didn't bother to service or get it checked cos the laptop was old too.

After that incident, I try to be around whenever I charge my laptop. 😅

Yes, even if i m admitted in hospital, i will ask for a laptop too
I try not to use a laptop for more than 4-5yrs (all the parts are not worth maintaining and our health & safety is of paramount esp we charge it or switch it on for 24hrs)

i seriously dont know how some humans can keep using a same laptop (Worst for gaming, i dont game at all) for more than 8yrs.......
i have frens who keep changing a new iphone or other phone models every 1-2 yrs which they dont even need to do that at all........(furthermore now alot uses their phones to view TV/programmes and to use all sort of app as well as watching porns) maybe that made them less reliance on Laptops or mcbk?

It was old (by definition of at most close to but definitely less than 5 years). All was working fine, but somehow I had a weird feeling that the laptop is going to conk out soon, given the "retard" mood... and then suddenly the smoke out incident happened! Probably it is just me cos I have so many friends who swear by Acer. Hahaha.... Acer and me have no affinity. 😜

 

Same here -  I also do not off my laptop. At most sleep mode. Also, my laptop mainly for work, some online drama, the occasion BW forum (like now)... that's about it. I do not see the need to keep changing (same goes for phone, tablet etc), unless is really getting slow, cranky...then i will consider to change. Else, most files can be backed up via external HD, Dropbox (I paid subscription for that due to work)....

 

The occasional "Restart" helps for any lag/hang - for both laptop and phone.

I'm not an Apple fan because it's grossly overpriced but I do have a Macbook Pro and have been using for the past 7 years.

 

Both the hardware and software are damn good. It won't give you any surprises like what Windows OS does. 

 

I have a pre-loved Macbook Air 2014 model for sale. Comes with Magsafe slot which is extinct now. Seldom used as it's my spare.

I was using Thinkpad (before they were sold to Lenovo), Acer and Asus laptops before I went to Macbooks.

I would say Macbooks are more stable, requires less maintenances (updates/defrag etc) than Windows laptops.

I m also puzzled why does Windows alwys need updates, how about Mcbks? they too need updates how frequently?

I don't use Windows laptop except for the office laptop, so I can't comment if there has been changes.

Macbook do have updates as well, but its more like 3-4 minor updates (which you can choose to ignore most of the time), and 1 major update once a year that will also take cares of all previous minor updates.

I have been using Apple for almost 15-20 years now.  For laptops, I find the Macbook Pro really stable.  The graphics are better.  There isn't a real need for any virus protection, although adding Malware bytes does provide more support.  Besides, with IE no longer in use, I find that there are still some software/sites that don't do too well in Chrome or FIrefox.  Safari seems to work fine.

I went Apple in 2011, and have gone through Macbook Air, Macbooks, Macbook Pro. Maybe this year I will cross over to M1 Macbooks.

I currently use Microsoft Edge on all my devices, as I have a mixture of windows and android devices, edge offers cross device sync, which is great for me.

Edge is built on the same Chrome engine/technology.

Whatever you can use/do on Chrome, you can do so with Edge.

But I found that it seems like Edge does not use as much RAM as chrome, so I switched.

For #1, CPU (N4500) was from 2021. But the display size (11.6) and resolution (1336x768) is a bit smaller and lower than what I would recommend as well.

For #3, CPU (N4020) was launch in 2019, so I wouldn't recommend it.

 

So out of the three, I would choose #2, but would upgrade the RAM to 8GB.

Make sure they upgrade the internal storage from 128GB EMMC to 256GB SSD (EMMC are slower than SSD)

And as the internal SSD is at 256GB, I would also suggest to purchase an external HDD or SSD to store your data.

Hi there!

 

In general, laptops from 2022 onwards requires at least 8GB of RAM to function normal- at least 2GB is used for Windows already and that leaves you with very little RAM for whatever else you may be doing. Understand that you're on a tight budget, but opening your budget a little bit more can ensure that you have 1) a decent experience 2) the investment lasts longer which makes you a happier consumer. 

 

Looking at all three, I would highly suggest that you avoid the first one was the specs are really poor and longevity is definitely a concern- see, the screen is small and the resolution is not sharp- if you're planning to read text and watch videos, this laptop will not be clear. Not to mention, the RAM is insufficient and the type of storage is slower + would fail much more quickly. 

 

Office 365 Personal is a yearly subscription. I suspect that it won't end after 1 year and you'll need to purchase a Microsoft Office license to continue using it. What you'll be looking for is a perpetual license; you buy once and you can keep it for life. Alternatively, you can try using Google Docs or Office which is a standalone app that allows you to use Word/Excel/Powerpoint for free if you're always connected to the Internet. 

 

I also did a brief search on both models and the display that they're using is called a TN panel. This is actually a pretty outdated technology (think LCD, AMOLED, OLED) and it won't be bright nor colour accurate when you're watching any sort of content on the screen. If you're ok with it though, it's servicable. 

 

I highly recommend that you head down to a showroom to test these machines out if possible 🙂 if you're willing to stretch your budget a little bit more, there are better options out there!

@Rhyn thanks, indeed why the 3 choices was the low pricing, but i understand what you said and sadly, i agree with the points highlighted (me not too it-savvy).

normally i would get laptops using intel core i-series processor, never bought those on celeron before, hence i seek advices on such processors. looks like i should wait for the comex show starting next week - to see if there are slightly cheaper but better options. maybe i could also check back here again with those 'better options'.

 

@JK2E4 yes, i do have external hdd/ssd if i were to proceed with the plan, but hearing from the 2 of you on the recommendations, i guess i should not carry on as planned.

2.due to lao hua eyesight -need a bigger frame
