But he can be an example: From New York Times: The Friends star opened up about his decades-long battle with addiction in a memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing which was published in 2022. Perry went to rehab 15 times and had undergone 14 surgeries to try and mitigate the damage done to his stomach lining due to alcohol and opioid use. The actor claimed that he almost died due to a gastrointestinal perforation in 2018 and spent months in the hospital. He was born into a wealthy Canadian family. He became successful as an actor. But unfortunately he had a flaw in his character. Not enough discipline to stay away from drugs and alcohol. It was amazing that he lived so long! Guest Guest
SEOUL - Lee Sun-kyun, a South Korean actor of the Oscar-winning film Parasite, was found dead, Yonhap news agency reported on Dec 27, citing police. Lee had been under investigation over illegal drug use allegations amid an ongoing government crackdown on illegal drugs. Lee was found unconscious next to briquettes inside a car at a park in Seoul on Dec 27 morning, after his wife reported to police that Lee had left home and she had found what appeared to be a suicide note, Yonhap said. Seoul’s Jongno police station did not immediately respond to phone calls. South Korea has tough drug laws, and drug crimes are typically punishable by at least six months in prison or up to 14 years for repeat offenders and dealers. Lee had been questioned three times by police, including for 19 hours over the weekend. The actor had said he was tricked into taking drugs by a bar hostess who then tried to blackmail him, Yonhap reported. Born in 1975, Lee starred as a rich family’s father in Parasite, and also played leading roles in South Korean movies including the 2012 thriller Helpless and 2014‘s All About My Wife, among others. Lee had the lead role in Apple TV+’s first Korean-language original series, which rolled out in 2021. Dr Brain, a six-episode sci-fi thriller, was about a cold-hearted neurologist, Koh Se-won, who tries to find clues to a mysterious family accident through brain experiments. Guest Guest
Oh no .. creator of Dragon Balls have passed away! Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball manga author, dies at 68 : NPR OBITUARIES Why 'Dragon Ball' creator Akira Toriyama was so important to the world of anime MARCH 8, 20243:58 PM ET By Diba Mohtasham This black and white photo taken in May 1982 shows Japanese manga artist Akira Toriyama, whose death was announced on March 8, 2024. Akira Toriyama, one of the most influential manga authors of all time, has died at age 68. His production company, Bird Studio, said in a statement on Friday that the cause of death was an acute subdural hematoma. The studio said the Japanese author was in the process of creating several manga works, but they did not say whether the works will still be released despite his passing. Toriyama was born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1955. He was known globally for his best-selling manga series Dragon Ball, which follows the adventures of an eccentric young warrior named Son Goku, who possesses superhuman strength and practices martial arts. "Toriyama's character Goku is so iconic that he has his own float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade," journalist and author Lauren Orsini told NPR. The Goku from "Dragon Ball" balloon floats during the 95th-annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Nov. 25, 2021, in New York City. She added that Toriyama took a lot of inspiration from the classic 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West. The 1984 comic gave rise to the hugely popular anime series Dragon Ball Z, multiple films, and video games. "He's directly inspired what we expect role-playing games to look like today," Orsini said. "If Dragon Ball hadn't existed, we might not have some of the other major anime that there are," Orsini said, referring to creations like Naruto and One Piece. "We certainly wouldn't have had America's largest distributor at the time, Funimation. The entire fandom landscape would look different." The franchise has a fan base globally, especially in Latin America. But beyond the world of anime and manga, Toriyama's influence can be seen in somewhat surprising ways as well. The poop emoji, for example, drew direct inspiration from a character in Toriyama's first major hit in the 1980s, Dr. Slump. Toriyama received various awards, including France's Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. "Thanks to the support of so many people around the world, he has been able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years," his studio's statement said. "We hope that Akira Toriyama's unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come." Toriyama died on March 1, and a funeral service was held with his family and a few relatives.
Steve5380
Famous Italian pianist Maurizio Pollini died at 82 three days ago. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/mar/24/maurizio-pollini-obituary https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurizio_Pollini What an intellectual GIANT and defender of liberal causes! I enjoyed his playing all my life, and today I found a video of young Pollini playing a Beethoven concerto with a young Claudio Abbado as director. What a treat! Young Pollini displays here an excellent technique, watching his hands is an educative experience. He also maintains a perfect posture, something many pianists lack. He is among the great ones! Another great, Vladimir Horowitz, had a famous quote: "pianists are either Jewish, gay or bad". Pollini was not Jewish, he was not bad, so... what is left? Pollini here looks cute, but he was married, and he is survived by his son. But... I know from personal experience that this does not mean anything... HendryTan
To the older folks who did your first processing with Word Perfect in the 1980-90s. Bruce Bastian, co-creator of the Word Processing Program, LGBT Activist has died at 76. ______________________________________________________________________________________ https://www.wsj.com/tech/bruce-bastian-wordperfect-lgbtq-activist-dies-at-76-6da293f4 Bruce Bastian, WordPerfect Co-Creator Who Became an LGBTQ Activist, Dies at 76 While his company was producing the world’s dominant word-processing software, he came out as gay to his wife, sons and Mormon community By Chris Kornelis July 2, 2024 12:00 pm ET When Alan Ashton was a computer-science professor at Brigham Young University in the mid-1970s, the director of the school’s marching band knocked on his door and said he wanted to use a computer to choreograph the band’s halftime shows. Ashton was easily persuaded; he was a trumpet player whose Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Utah was “Electronics, music and computers.” Bruce Bastian, the graduate student who was working as BYU’s marching-band director, turned out to be a quick learner. “He was very conscientious, very thorough,” Ashton said in an interview, “and just absolutely brilliant.” Within a few years, the two were at work on a program that would turn them into two of the richest people in the nation, founders of the company that made WordPerfect, the dominant word-processing software in the 1980s and early ’90s and one of the first pieces of software many Americans bought when they brought home their first PCs. But behind the hundreds of millions of dollars and blockbuster success, Bastian’s personal life, he later said, was in “free fall.” Between the time he and Ashton released what would later be known as WordPerfect to the public in 1980 and when they sold the company for $1.4 billion in 1994, Bastian told his wife, four sons and his Mormon community that he was gay and leaving both his marriage and the church. When he died, June 16, at the age of 76 from complications associated with pulmonary fibrosis, he had been living a different life: A longtime advocate for LGBTQ rights, Bastian was married to a man, and had found a way to maintain relationships with his family, who remained dedicated members of the church that rejected his sexual orientation. “I kind of have three parts of my life,” he said in 2010 during one of several extensive interviews he gave to the Mormon Stories podcast, “the pre-WordPerfect life, the WordPerfect years, and now the LGBT years.” The pre-WordPerfect life Bruce Wayne Bastian was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Arlon and Una Bastian on March 23, 1948. His father went back and forth between farming and running a grocery store. His mother was a homemaker and a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who took her six children to church on Sunday. Her husband didn’t join them. Bruce Bastian later said one reason was because his father moonlighted as a jazz musician and that members of the church looked down on the fact that he performed in places where there was drinking and smoking. As a child, Bastian felt like he was different, but he didn’t understand it. People around him could sense it, too. “My grandmother, when I was 9 or 10 years old, she’d call me ‘Bruce Ann,’ which was very embarrassing,” he said on Mormon Stories. “I don’t know if she saw some things or just was trying to tease me or what, but I didn’t take it as a compliment.” Bruce Bastian directed BYU’s marching band as he pursued a master’s in music, but switched to computer science. Photo: Ashton family By high school, he knew he was gay, but kept it to himself and prayed that it would go away. Bastian, who played clarinet and saxophone, among other instruments, studied music education at BYU in Provo, Utah. He took time off from school to go on a church mission to Italy. “I’ll admit that one of the reasons I went on a mission was because I thought: OK, so if I go on a mission and I prove to God that I can be a good missionary and I can do everything he says for two years, that he’ll take this away,” he said on Mormon Stories. The WordPerfect years After he earned his bachelor’s degree, Bastian directed BYU’s marching band as he pursued a master’s in music, but switched to computer science after he lost his job directing the band. It was an opportune time and place to be pursuing computer science. Ashton had emerged from a famous computer-science program at the University of Utah, where his professors included computer graphics pioneers David Evans and Ivan Sutherland. His fellow students included Ed Catmull, who went on to co-found Pixar; John Warnock, co-founder of Adobe; and Netscape co-founder Jim Clark. “So many people think that computing starts and ends with garages in California and dorm rooms in Massachusetts, and that’s not the case,” said Andrew Meade McGee, curator of computing at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. “It really is a highly dispersed story with many interesting places, and Utah is one of those early centers of creativity.” Ashton enlisted Bastian to work on the word-processing software he had designed. The pair ultimately built it for the city of Orem, Utah. They retained the rights to the program and brought it to market with their company, originally known as Satellite Software International. Bruce Bastian, left, and his WordPerfect co-founder Alan Ashton. The word-processing software dominated for a time. Introduced to the public as SSI*WP in 1980 and later rebranded as WordPerfect, it became the dominant word-processing software in the ’80s and early ’90s, and the Orem-based company grew to upward of 7,000 employees. In 1990, Ashton and Bastian were both listed on the Forbes 400 with their net worths estimated at $475 million each. WordPerfect was a hit when users relied on MS-DOS, but didn’t translate well to Windows. By the mid-’90s, WordPerfect was rapidly being overtaken by Microsoft Word. Ashton and Bastian—who never took the company public, and held 99% of it themselves—sold it to Novell for $1.4 billion in 1994. By then, Bastian and his wife, Melanie Laycock Bastian, had four sons, and the couple had divorced in 1993, several years after they separated and Bastian had come out to his family as gay. Around the same time, Bastian left the Mormon Church, which was vocally opposed to homosexuality. (Melanie Laycock Bastian died in 2016.) “Those decisions were really difficult, life-changing, but they were the best decisions of my life,” he told Outwords in 2018. “It’s hard for my children to understand how I could say leaving their mother was one of my best decisions, but it allowed me to be who I was.” The LGBTQ years Keeping his home base in Utah, Bastian spent the next three decades as a philanthropist and activist, donating millions of dollars to support organizations and causes related to the arts and LGBTQ issues, including Equality Utah, the Utah Pride Center and the Human Rights Campaign. In 2008, Bastian donated $1 million to the campaign to oppose California’s Proposition 8 ballot initiative to ban same-sex marriage. Ashton, his WordPerfect co-founder and a devout Mormon, gave $1 million to support it. Ashton said that his donation was hurtful for Bastian—something he didn’t anticipate, but says he should have. He and Bastian had remained in touch over the decades and even in business, with shared real-estate holdings that dated back to their WordPerfect days. Ashton said the last time they saw each other was at a Utah Jazz basketball game last season. The two embraced and Ashton said he told Bastian how much he appreciated him. “I thought the world of Bruce,” he said, “and was grateful to be able to speak with him and tell him of my love for him and my appreciation and the blessing that he has been for me and for our family.” Bastian’s four sons remained in the Mormon Church and are active members to this day. Rick Bastian, his eldest son, said that they didn’t talk much about religion, and noted that he and two of his brothers—and their wives—attended their father’s wedding to Clint Ford in 2018. “We were all well aware of differences of opinion that we had, but at the end of the day, we cared about one another,” Rick Bastian said. “I truly believe you can love someone and show that love without seeing the world the same way.” He said his father had remained on good terms with his mother. “From, say, the late ’80s on, was our family somewhat unconventional?” Rick Bastian said. “Absolutely. But we made it work and I think my dad—and especially my mom—deserves some credit for that.” Though Bruce Bastian was deeply critical of the teachings of the Mormon Church, Rick Bastian said he doesn’t think his father abandoned the idea of there being a God. “What God wants most is for you to be happy, healthy, fulfilled, and be able to be an authentic human being,” Bruce Bastian said on Mormon Stories in 2020, adding: “When I finally got to the point where I was authentic, wow, the happiness of heaven poured down upon me. I should write scripture, huh?”
Steve5380
Creating WordPerfect was quite an accomplishment, and no one should doubt that gays are not inferior to anyone when it comes to intelligence and capacity. Further details of his life also show that he was a very decent, moral person. Recognizing in himself the lack of guilt for being gay, against the heavy brain-washing by the Mormons, he still not rabidly turned against religious beliefs. He wasn't true to himself when he married a woman, then changed his mind to embrace his homosexual orientation, hurting innocent lives. I wouldn't consider that to be very decent or moral behaviour. He may have his struggles facing his Mormons community but he shouldn't have made use of his wife as his beard to pretend he was straight. I know that many people in religious denial of their sexual orientation do that, but that doesn't make it right when he got his wife and children involuntary involved in his charade and then having to face and accept his coming out and leaving them. I am sure it was painful for everyone, especially his wife and children who were losing a husband and father, but to him it was likely more of liberation and party time than grieving of loss like his wife and children. I am sure they would put up a brave front for him and give him their blessings, but that doesn't mean they didn't suffer any grief, heartbreak or trauma in the interim or aftermath. They may be filthy rich, but mental illness does not discriminate between the rich and poor.

Hi Belinda, I see that you share a frequent idea of us gays when judging gays who nonetheless married a woman and started a family. I am such a creature. At 35, and being quasi virgin, I married and had children. I had no pressure to hide anything, although attracted to men I was not sure if this was due to my lack of experience with women. There is a continuum of orientations between gay and straight, and I probably was somewhere in between. I was good looking and my future wife was very beautiful. I found her very attractive, and SHE seduced ME, ha ha. Not long thereafter my son was born, and we became a happy family, that stayed together for 13 years. We separated amicably because she missed the life in the country, while I am a city guy. She remarried, and I didn't. I have now a great relationship with my son and his family. There was surely some pain and suffering by both sides, but no victimization. And definitely NO mental illness! I think that those gays who married women had no evil intentions, but we were somewhat confused. This is what I think of Bruce Bastian, and indeed... he did great things for the gay community that exculpates him of any blame. Maybe one day, with more experience, you will think the same. Could that "somewhat confused" be a form of denial and ego defense mechanism and wanting to be in the closet? Like sometimes people around could tell someone is gay but only he doesn't know it himself?

I was talking about people like Bruce Bastian who flips around their sexuality, so I was on topic. Because if a somewhat confused or even bisexual man divorced a woman and left the family and children to be with another man, then isn't that like a straight man divorcing and leaving his wife and children to be with another woman? It sounds more like a change of heart, rather than a fluid sexual identity? Otherwise, it will be a beard situation. Both are unfair to the wife and kids, imho. singalion
Magic moment: Sydney aquarium filled with song after sea birds mourn death of gay penguin Sphen Sea Life Sydney Aquarium keeper describes the unique and ‘very beautiful’ singing scene that unfolded as Sphen’s partner, Magic, and the gentoo colony were taken to see Sphen There wasn’t a dry eye among staff at Sydney’s Sea Life Aquarium as Magic and his fellow gentoo penguins cried out, mourning the loss of Sphen in an emotional scene never before witnessed by employees. Sphen, whose same-sex love story with Magic made the couple globally famous, appeared to die of natural causes as he approached his 12th birthday, the aquarium confirmed on Thursday morning. Penguin keeper Renee Howell witnessed the couple’s love story bloom from the beginning, and said the pair’s impact as a worldwide symbol of equality was “immeasurable”. “It’s one in a million,” she said. “You never really will get to see this again.” Sphen and Magic’s relationship began the same way as many other species – including humans, with courtship. Penguins will typically bow or sing to one another during this time, but gentoos are unique in that they will collect and present pebbles to one another. “You see [penguins] searching along the beach, along the ice, looking for those perfect pebbles to give to their partners,” Howell said. “They will use those pebbles to build their nest and that is where they will lay the eggs.” Sphen and Magic shot to fame in 2018 when news of their same-sex male relationship in the aquarium made global headlines. They had just celebrated six years together and successfully adopted and raised two chicks: Sphengic (Lara) in 2018 and Clancy in 2020. Howell said that same-sex partnerships are thought to be somewhat common among penguins, but what was different with Sphen and Magic was how they shared their duties as parents. “They took their individual [turns] on the nest, and they would go out and search for food, and then they’d come back and swap the care of the egg,” she said. “They definitely divvied up the roles really quite evenly between the two.” In the wild when one penguin dies and their partner doesn’t know what has happened, they will typically go searching for them. Howell said this is why keepers at the aquarium felt it so necessary to show Magic that Sphen had passed, so he could understand “his partner wouldn’t actually be returning”. The keeper said it was an incredibly emotional moment when Magic was taken to Sphen, alongside the gentoo colony and all of the staff members. Magic immediately started singing, with all the penguins around him joining in the chorus. “It was a very beautiful moment, the air was just filled with their singing,” Howell said. “It showed the impact [Sphen] had on his partner and that [Magic] actually recognised that his partner was there. “Soon after, he became quite protective of his partner and that was a very emotional time for us, but we needed to do that in order for him to hopefully comprehend what had happened.” Howell said staff at the aquarium had never seen anything like this occur before, so they aren’t entirely sure what the singing means. “But in that moment for us, it was a beautiful send-off.” Magic is now entering his first breeding season without his partner, but is still collecting pebbles for a nest – a promising sign. Knowing the impact Sphen had on the wider community is providing comfort to the entire team, who share strong bonds with the animals, Howell said. “To us, they weren’t just penguins. They all have their individual quirks and personalities, so it is definitely sad losing one of those members. “They inspired so many people across the entire world and to us, that is incredibly special and we’ll hold that with us for ever.”
