Please stay home and help others and yourself ....think about the frontline staff at hospitals with their sacrifices ....most other deaths  do not affect others physically , but this does ....

Stranded in Ecuador: How a Singaporean couple slowly found their way home

When we booked our trip in mid-February, South America was one of the safest places in the world because the virus hadn’t reached there.

During that time, trips to the Galapagos Islands were heavily discounted because the Chinese had been cancelling their travels. The situation seemed under control in Singapore and elsewhere, so we figured it was safe to go.

Eight days later, when we returned to the main town of Santa Cruz, we found out that the virus had turned into a pandemic. We’d booked another scuba diving cruise after this one, as well as a land tour, both of which were cancelled. At that time, the Galapagos was virus-free, but the Ecuadorian government had shut their borders and were eager to get all the tourists out of the country.

THE MADNESS BEGINS

That’s when the chaos started. We went to the airport to see how we could get out, but were told that we had to go to San Cristobal because our flight had been booked out of there (that’s where our cancelled scuba diving cruise would have ended).

We made our way to San Cristobal by ferry, where we had an outbound flight booked for Mar 23. We managed to change that flight to the 18th but the day before, we got news that the last flights out of the Galapagos were leaving that day. That’s when we thought, die lah!

We went immediately to the airport and it was just chaos because everyone was trying to leave, but only people with tickets could leave. There was a lot of shouting and stomping of feet, and in our case, cutting of queues.

We’d been at the top of a waiting list for a flight out and had been waiting all day. Then this local woman comes in front of us and buys seven tickets and that’s it, we were done. No tickets for us!

Over the next few days, we went to and from the airport four more times, each time because we were told that there would be a flight leaving the next day. But there never was.

Another chat group was set up by tourists for European Union citizens and they were kind enough to let us join it because we were the only two Singaporeans around. Through these chats we received updates on what the municipal government was doing and how they were helping to get tourists out of the province.

STUCK IN SAN CRISTOBAL

Before we left Singapore, we’d e-registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, so the consulate in Brazil contacted us. But it was difficult for them to do anything for us since they were quite far away. Whatever news they could give us, we could get quicker since we were there on the ground.

In any case, by this time, we figured we’d be stuck in San Cristobal for at least a fortnight, so we talked to the hostel we were staying at and they were kind enough to give us a discount on our room rates. Hotels there only accept cash, and we could only draw US$100 (S$145) a day from the ATMs, with expensive fees.

That night, at 4am, we received a text message telling us to head to the airport by 7am to get on a 10am flight to Quito. It’s a good thing we woke up to the notification. If we’d missed that message, God knows how long we would have waited to get out of San Cristobal after that.

It turns out the government had arranged two “humanitarian” flights, which got us out of the island for free. To our horror, when we got to the airport, we found out that we were on separate planes at different times.

Our mission, now that we had made it to the capital city of Quito, was to get air tickets out of there to Amsterdam, where our KLM flight home had been booked for Mar 23. We’d met a Dutchman on our trip, who had returned to Holland and was kind enough to help us re-book our Quito-to-Amsterdam tickets from there. Thank goodness for him because in Ecuador, the entire system had collapsed from the sheer number of people trying to get in touch with the airlines.

No one picked up the phones, the recorded messages you get are in Spanish so we couldn’t understand them anyway, and whenever we tried to book a flight online, we’d get a message at the paywall to call the airline’s hotline, which, of course, was unmanned. The flight schedule showed that there are no flights coming in or out for weeks.

Our friend eventually managed to get us waitlisted on a flight out of Quito on Mar 23 at 5.30pm. By this time, we could be optimistic because now we knew how the system works. We knew the best positions to stand and wait at so that we could be kiasu and cheong once the counter opened. We only worried when the counter staff told us that the priority for KLM was to get Europeans out of Quito, which meant we were low on the list.

Monday night (Mar 23), we finally got on the flight out from Quito to Amsterdam, which means we’ll make our flight from Amsterdam back home. What a relief!

These two idiots should not be travelling in the first place ! They are the many typical educated idiots around these days ...I will not help these dumb travellers

SINGAPORE - Singapore has confirmed 73 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday (March 25) - the largest increase in a day which brought the total number of cases here to 631, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said.

Time for lock down is near,  better go supermarket and buy some stuff.

You should have a choice of either wear a mask or hold your breath.

We know you fart all the time holding your breath, which is worst?  In Singapore, we were told to keep our mouth shut as preventative measure.  You should take a leaf from Singaporeans..

Local transmission is definitely increasing,  time to shut down restaraunts, shopping centres, gyms,  places of attractions and only food and medical related outlets are allowed to get ready for a lock down.

A lot of imported cases due to locals are coming back from overseas. It worsen the covid new cases and situation here. If they never recall all the locals from overseas to come back, i wonder will the situation better?

Shutdown all the eatery and shopping centres etc not much use if people still going to work. Not all people are working from home, although some companies are practicing, but most people still go to work at least 2-3 times per week.

My food always can last for months.  Just kidding. Hoarding is discouraged.

Moreover fresh vegetables and fruits are perishable.  Not advisable to get too much. 3 days is sufficient.

Then there are these retarded waste of space who think it’s funny to breach SHN under the lame excuse of ‘I thought it starts tomorrow’. These low lifers really need to be sent to jail and not allowed to procreate.

Its not advisable to hoard, but one can stock up over time.

Fresh vegetables and fruits for 3 days is fine, maybe longer for some fruits.

But frozen vegetables are all as good as the fresh ones, same with the frozen berries, so you can fill your freezer with them.

(the fridges don't work harder if they are full. Their heavier work is to cool down what comes in recently.  The only problem comes if there are power outages)

MTI A*STAR has been extremely quiet during the entire COVID-19 period. I thought a lot of those "scientists" there are supposed to be doing biomedical research all these years for over a decade or even two already? All those are the taxpayers money spent. What have they been doing all the while with all the taxpayer's money? Why are they still so quiet now? And now, it is always DUKE-NUS coming out with findings and potentials. A*STAR seems to be just another useless piece of government instrument sucking up all our money, just like what the Minsters are doing now. Waste of taxpayers money!

A team of scientists at Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) has developed a new test which will be able to tell if someone is infected with Covid-19 in as fast as five minutes.

Yeah... And a private company did it using their own money even though their test is conclusive in 3 hours, which is more than good enough. So we spent billions of dollars on A*STAR since inception just to o get such small incremental improvements? You need to be the one to try keeping up. The amount of money spent on all those HUNDREDS or THOUSANDS of "scientists" at A*STAR, just so that they can come up with one miserable quick test, is really not worth the shit at all. If that money had been given to a private company, they might be able to come up with the results of the test in 5 seconds. If those money can flow to the general public, Singapore would have be a much better place. At least Duke NUS is now coming up with a VACCINE, and in such short time too. What has A*STAR been doing all these years? 10 to 20 years to come up with such "innovations"? What a joke!!

The mentality of throwing away million dollars in order to earn a dollar, piece by piece, is not uncommon.  You won't even know when is the break even point.

Are they using that at the borders now? By now, everyone will need to serve the SHN already. So what is the point of talking about a 5 minutes test?

Are they even earning anything in the first place? What good have they done for the innovation community so far? It is real time to evaluate their ROI and if it is worth any shit to even keep this useless organization at all. Other nations have NASA to put man into space. What have ours done?

Spending other people money do not need any transparency nor accountability, because if you lost their money, it is pure judgement error and then weave out  excuses to collect more in the interest of doing other people good.  If you make profit out of other people money, it is your own effort, thus you deserved to be heavily rewarded for your good judgement and pay very little interest to those whom you took the money.  Thus Singaporeans are always at the losing end of the stick and you can never win those who control your money and took it for granted.

the official advice from the World Health Organization has been clear. Only two types of people should wear masks: those who are sick and show symptoms, and those who are caring for people who are suspected to have the coronavirus.

Nobody else need wear a mask, and there are several reasons for that! for many who cannot get over this:
https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/when-and-how-to-use-masks

Even until now, there are still ignorant fools trying to dissuade people from wearing masks?? The BBC article itself said "In East Asia, many people are used to wearing masks when they are sick or when it's hayfever season, because it's considered impolite to be sneezing or coughing openly. The 2003 Sars virus outbreak, which affected several countries in the region, also drove home the importance of wearing masks, particularly in Hong Kong, where many died as a result of the virus.

So one key difference between these societies and Western ones, is that they have experienced contagion before - and the memories are still fresh and painful."

SOME PEOPLE NEVER LEARN!! In fact, even WHO itself said the world had squandered away the first chance to keep the virus in check. And now, there are still people telling us not to wear mask?? https://www.westernadvocate.com.au/story/6697854/dont-squander-chance-to-control-virus/?cs=12512

This is old news: https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/covid-19-beginning-of-very-long-fight-coronavirus-lawrence-wong-12574428

But I wonder if that was the reason on why we responded so slowly at the beginning in stopping all the travels and implementing all the social distancing measures, and we only did that AFTER other countries have done so : " The more we try to stop or slow down the virus, the steeper will be the damage on our economies."

I don't know why Singaporeans are so concern about saving SIA?!

>60% of SIA & Silkair Pilots are non-Singaporeans. >70% of Cabin Crew are also non Singapore Citizens. Imagine, the entire national carrier are non locals! Over the last 40 years, Singapore has been recuiting foreign pilots. SIA has been crazily recruiting foreign Cadet Pilots (CP)(free sponsorship scheme) all the while and those poor Singaporeans have limited chance. SIA has been quietly doing recruiting CP from India, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singaporeans are so ignorant.

Cabin crew are the same too! Many sweet young Singaporeans got chopped. For the past 15 years, SIA took in lots of Mainlander Chinese, Malaysian Chinese, Hong Indonesian Chinese, Taiwanese and Hong Kees as cabin crew. I met lots of Shanghainese and Nanjingnese cabin crew at one time and till today, the situation never improve. Lots of Singaporeans hoping to get into SIA is so naive and they thought they have second chance after failing first round,

Alot of people did not know that the recruitment team for pilots (Capt, FO, SO and CP) and cabin crew comprising mostly non-Singaporeans. Believe me or not, even those Singaporeans in the recruitment are ex-Malaysians.

To sum up everything, SIA should be folded. For all these years, the glamour jobs in SIA went to the foreign instead of locals. Commoners like us why should we save SIA when it does not truly belong to Singapore?

泰国禁鸡蛋出口 确保国内供应充足

I tot it was just few days back when we had 300,000 eggs flown in from Thailand.... Things change fast, if more countries follow and restrict food export,  SG won't die from virus but hunger.

If Singapore did not issue citizenship like toilet roll, if there is no blind opening of gate to all sort of foreigners and now diseases, there will always be sufficient foods to feed the nation.   My pioneer leader has always warned of  singapore not having natural resources to feed the people, but now this country has so 6.5 million mouth to feeds. How are the govt going to prioritise who to feed first - with 1/3 of the population comprising of foreigners - and if every country tried to lockdown their own food supplies to save their own people above other countries?   This is something our govt didn't expect it coming, but now...we are our own survival.  KNN, still want to go ahead with 10 million population for the future.

Fine or jail for not observing at least 1-metre social distancing in public

SINGAPORE — Those who intentionally sit on a seat or stand in a queue less than one metre away from another person in public venues can be fined up to $10,000 or jailed a maximum of six months, or both.

Such penalties also apply to those who intentionally sit on a fixed seat that is demarcated as not to be occupied in public venues, as well as those who take part in events held anywhere here with more than 10 participants. These and other social distancing regulations, along with penalties, were included in one of several updates made by the Ministry of Health (MOH) to the Infectious Diseases Act.

I don't know why Singaporeans are so concern about saving SIA?!

Desperate move trying to make things right, spore is too crowded to follow 1m rule,  UOB will be the first to kena fine,  they try to create spacing for in-between seats but the first row and second row is definitely less than 0.5 m.

1m is not even the standard,  it should be 2m like most countries implemented.

It's not just the corporations infringing the rules.

The individuals are flouting them even more blatantly, especially the young ones. The youngsters are still taking the entire situation way too lightly. They still want to socialize around, eat together, play together, hang out together, dance together, get infected together. But I bet none of them will care to die together.

Sometimes, even sitting in accordance to the social distancing rule may not help, especially when people want to talk behind you without wearing their mask, and their stupid saliva fly all over the place!

The SARS outbreak in 2003 was a serious reminder to all of us who were old enough to know what it was all about. Those youngsters who were only toddlers or teenagers during that outbreak, had no clue how bad things can be. And I have personally encountered them getting aggressive when they are reminded. I really hope the police will do their part and fine all these people to the maximum extent. Serious examples need to be made if gentle reminders don't work.

I think this social distancing is a failure. We are in for a long rough time. Maybe taking pictures and social shaming these organizations and people will make them respect this rule better.

SINGAPORE - Shoppers at supermarket chain FairPrice will now be allowed to buy up to only two packs of paper products such as toilet paper and tissue paper, down from four.

They will also be able to buy up to only six cans of canned products, five litres of cooking oil and $30 of frozen poultry, where there were previously no limits.

Existing purchasing limits for instant noodles, rice, eggs, fresh poultry and vegetables remain unchanged.

Is confirm a failure,  why not extend it to mrt escalator,  train and bus? That is the most ideal environment to catch the virus and yes,  they should also fine and jail those who still want to talk loudly and laugh with saliva flying all around.

Good idea. Maybe you can be the first by talking to some policeamn with your saliva flying all over his face.

Social distancing inside train is quite difficult,  but the least we can do is to avoid talking or wearing a mask if you want to talk.

Don't read and response to guests' post

All hawkers and the food court assistants should wear mask, if not whenever they ask what food do you want? Their saliva will be dropping all over the food.

Imagine if there is one virus carrier without symptom serving food n not wearing mask, how many customers will be infected?

Dangerous.
