I learned the term Straight Acting in my very young days as a 13-year-old boy.

And I got the basics right — live my life as if my hands were literally tied. No broken wrists, no floppy hands, no dainty gesturing. 
 

I always thought of this as my early-days survival mode: Blend in, don’t stand out. 
 

And I think I did well. 
 

But while I could always control my hormones and reign in sexual feelings towards other boys, there was no way I could control emotions towards my friends, especially those who were so close to me they treated me like their own brother. 

 

In upper secondary, I got close to my classmate D and our friendship took us from the classroom to the bedroom.
 

But in a brotherly sort of way. 
 

After school, we would hang out at nearby food courts. Sometimes, we would take a quiet bus ride and head for Orchard Road and roamed the streets in our school uniform.
 

On weekends, we’d go cycling or rollerblading. 
 

Soon, we grew close enough and he began staying overnight in my room on some weekends. 
 

I remember the first night he stayed over. It wasn’t planned. We had simply chatted way too much and he had missed the last bus. 
 

D was comfortable enough to stay over but he slept in his own clothes. 
 

That night, I intentionally placed a bolster between us because I knew that gesture was what any recommended guide or textbook would call for — be the first to say it’s gay to sleep so close to another boy, and you’d have earned yourself trust. 
 

I couldn’t sleep well that night. Not with D just separated from me by my bolster. Not when I could hear D’s light breathing.

From that night, D and my friendship grew. 
 

To him, it was because I had trusted him enough to give him shelter that night, an act of brotherly care. 
 

To him, it was because he had seen the Adam outside the classroom. How my primary school trophies lined up on my book shelf spoke about my earlier years, how chosen photo displays of our common friends framed my social life. And how books on my shelves hinted at the future I wanted for myself. 
 

D would never know that to me, our friendship grew because it went beyond the Yellow Line… and I was no longer in the friend zone with D.

 

For months after our first night together, I struggled with a mix of emotions: The joy of D vocalising and demonstrating our newfound closeness and the fear of falling even more deeply for him. 
 

The second time D slept over, he was lying on my bed like it belonged to him. 
 

In a casual — and I’m certain, non-sexual way — D asked me to massage his thighs because the cycling that day had worn him out. 
 

As I reached for his thighs, I felt as if the invisible ropes that bound my hands had magically dissolved. 
 

This was the time when I could be myself, I thought. Can I afford to be free? Do I dare venture further?

I reluctantly relented and complained about being made a servant so that our lives and friendship wouldn’t dangerously veer off track.
 

My heart pounded rapidly but years of acting allowed me to stay calm. Bored of this massage even. 
 

That night, there was no bolster between D and me. But I felt the furthest away from him. 

I couldn’t sleep but the thoughts running through my head weren’t of lust and hope. They were of restraint and fear. 
 

I really had the urge to mindlessly turn over and slump one leg over D as if he were my bolster. He wouldn’t have minded, I know. But I would. 
 

The fear of losing D was too much to bear. 
 

Sometimes, when I think back of this intimate episode, I would always wonder how D would have responded if I initiated — or, for all I know, reciprocated — physical touch. 

But I also take pride in self control.

Today, D is married with two lovely kids whom I watch growing up.

I have to confess that I have liked a straight man before, of at least, he appears to be, and acts like a straight man in front of me.
