I just moved to new place and the laundry area a bit small. Which washing machine is best to use in general, top load or front load? Also, what is the best brand?

Top load no need to bend down but you cannot put your laundry items on top of the machines and suitable for tall people.  Front load you need to bend down, and there are space on top for you to put your barang barang. Suitable for shortie.  Front not so common, top quite common.  Anything will do, if it has the function you need.  Tah Da!!!

Do you need a dryer and will you be using it much? Take that into consideration. With dryer the whole washing process will be longer though. 5 hours plus though. Top load washing machine also have dryer function but less of it.

Newer top loading washing machine take up less space.

Exactly! Surely it’s more effort to create a post here and keep having to check for replies that you are probably going to anyway want to verify via your own research because, maybe, the patrons of this site are not experts on washing machines… ?

it’s like the ‘I’m in ikea right now and wondering whether I should buy a three or four legged stool’ guy 😂

Try Thomson , Brandt, Candy european top loaders from Best or HARVEY norman,

Compact, tumble wash action, water saving and with warm, hot , cold water options.

Compact dimensions, easy top load and unload.

Compact dimensions, tumble action , water.saving.

Watch the spring mechanism door.

These brands are always on promotion and price reduction cause locals are not familiar with them .

Europeans in small apartments love using them.

Find front load washer more common nowadays. Could be front load more water efficiency and the clothing is washed more cleaner.

I don't know about the latest machines, but throughout my life the front loaded have had advantages over the top loaded.

Front loaded do better and more gentle washing and use less water.  But they are more expensive.

After using a top loaded for many years, I changed to a front loaded which I have also for many years, and I'm very satisfied with the latter.

Note:  even an older man like me can easily bend the knees or bend at the hip to access the front loader,  so this is no excuse, you youngsters!

Not sure if it’s a misconception, but I have the belief that a top load washer’s lifespan is longer as compared to a front load washer.

The first and only washing machine I ever bought is a heavy duty top loader, purchased in 1986.

I have had  the motor replaced once when it suddenly stopped working about 6 years ago.

It works just as good, as it did, way back when I was a young man.

If the motor was replaced and as the years went by some more parts began to rot and were replaced by new ones; then, after a year or so, every part had been replaced. Do you think the "restored" top loader is still the same object as the original?

Personally, I prefer front load washer. I find it gives cleaner wash. Supposedly to use less water too.
The only complaint is the washing time is slow. My current washer takes about 1:45hrs to 2:00hrs to complete the wash.
Brand wise: No comment as I have only used one brand so far. I think it is also a bit of heng-suay when you buy electronic goods. Some find a certain brand good, while some will find that same brand not so good.

Not in Sg but we have a front loader and satisfied with the performance and this particular brand [hint: Exxxxx] never had any issue since we bought it.

This year seems wetter and we're looking for a dryer with the heat pump technology as it is more energy efficient than the old vented technology.

But in the country where we live, the combo washer and dryer machines are not so common. Any recommendation on a reliable dryer brands with heat pump technology?

The washing machine is well over 30 years old and the manufacturer is now no longer in existence.

So, when it breaks down again, I think it will be time for modern technology.

Front load la. Then you can even stack stuff on the washing machine since you say your place is small

Front Loader is kinder to the clothes. If your loads are not extremely dirty, a quick wash setting on the Front Loader helps to save on time, water & electricity. If the Front Loader comes with dryer, you could set it to wash & dry and go relax and do your errands. Personally, I prefer separate washer & dryer. Individual dryer dries better. The only disadvantage is the transfer of the washed to the dryer. And another space is also taken up when the machines are individual pieces.

In Singapore  , these brands used to be available for Front Load washing machines, very good.

AEG, SIEMENS,

Nowadays  ,available in HK, INDIA.

My friend had an AEG front load washer which she used for 28 years,

She nearly had a mental bteakdown when her AEG kaput and she had to venture into electrical shops to choose brands she had never heard before Samsung , LG, MIDEA,  HAIER, BEKO, CANDY,  front load washers.

I told her to be prepared that newer washing machines will self destruct at 12.00 midnight on last day of their manuacturers warranty.

If every manufacturer made machines that lasted 25 years,  best denki, harvey norman sales rep can go back home and plant grass and eat grass.

AEG used to be sold in Singapore maybe too good and too long lasting.

SIEMENS also was a brand available , maybe 12 years ago.

Maybe too long, lasting and good , agent folded becos no repeat business. So they kaput.

Another brand that quietly faded away is a Finnish/Swedish brand front load  ASKO which claims no vibration, very quiet ,  no  rubber gasket, guarantee not to leak.

Its ASKO , a disappeared brand in Singapore.

MIELE and De Dietrich are 2.5 times more expensive than run of the mill German brands like BOSCH.

ELECTROLUX ,  seems to have deviated from their old, old, reliable reputation.

You'd have to buy the highest end Electrolux washer to be satisfied with the wash performance.

Top load washers are great for throwing in additional laundry in the middle of a wash, and can also be used to soak your dirty laundry in detergent water over the night for cleaner washes.

I bought my top loader washer in 1977.  After 27 years it started to release small particles of grease that stained the clothes, apparently from the motor. In 1905 it quit altogether and I bought the front loader I have today.  So it was 28 years for the top loader, and already 16 years for the front loader.

Even if my front loader quits today,  16 years is a life sufficiently long to make it irrelevant compared with other factors to consider.  Front loader is my choice.

The way you put it, it sounds like its either the washer is gonna bury you, or you are gonna bury the washer.

Either it will  hit you with a mallet ot stifle you with a sulphur pillow.

LOL.

1:45 hrs to 2 hrs is pretty standard, isn't it? assuming its for 3 wash cycles.

if the load is alot, can even go up to 3 hrs plus.

I used to use a top loader then realise the drum is hard to keep clean. use bleach to clean everytime still got non stop algae .

used to use top loaders for decades cos cheap.

now I'm using a bosch series 6 washer dryer.

I wash 3hr + using the allergen cycle (wash  only. dry indoors) .

wash bedding i will wash+dry so that any dust mites die.

Once every week (if I remember) i will run a drum clean cycle which will heat the water to 90C to kill any thing in the drum.

if I die die need something fast then I wash+ dryer which is convenient. or if someone else occupies all the indoor drying space (I have 10 bamboo poles hanging in the kitchen with a fan permanently on to dry it).

May I ask, your usage of so many hot wash and drying cycles, did your electricity bill go up by another $50 to $100 dollars a month, or is it closer to $40 to $50 a month more.

As it is now, my monthly bill is S$ 200 -$230 A MONTH  , 2 person to 1 person household , with 3 bedroom , system 4 aircon hdb install , using a japanese top load with no hot water wash,

Using your method of washer cum drier , using your schedule and frequency, pls estimate your monthly washing machine portion of electric bill, thank u.
