Bangkok is getting a new name. Well, not exactly new. But it's what Thais already call it — Krung Thep Maha Nakhon.

The Office of Royal Society drafted an announcement of the change and the Thai cabinet approved it on Tuesday, 15 February.

Bangkok Post reported that the name change still needs to be vetted by a committee in charge of drafting bills and will only become official once that has been completed.

According to the announcement, the name 'Bangkok' will still be recognised. But it will appear in parenthesis.

Officials posted a message on Facebook to say that both names can still be used, after the change had drawn criticism.

The Prime Minister's office draft included a list of updated names of countries, territories, administrative districts, and capitals proposed by the Office of the Royal Society of Thailand, with Krung Thep Maha Nakhon's name as one of the key changes.

Bangkok's name in Thai is actually the longest name of a city in the world and 'Krung Thep Maha Nakhon' is merely a shortened version of it

If you think that's a mouthful already, get ready for the full name.

Here goes: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.

Yeah. I'm probably going to stick to Krung Thep Maha Nakhon or Bangkok for now.
