Who's the guy 2nd from left, last row?

Not sure of name but he played small roles and one of them was as a softie teacher in Good morning Teacher where Chen Liping's mother Jin Yin Ji tried to match make them together but she only like Li Nan Xing

In early days of Star Search, almost all 12 finalists would be signed up by TCS for minimally at least one year contract, those were the glorious days of TCS/SBC, now, they can only afford up sign up at most one winner and one finalist

Sometimes potential ones are not signed up due to budget constraints like the one who recently acts in various dramas Allen Chen from Taiwan but has really good leading actor qualities

.... His telling of stories and fables on stage is the most unbearable moment on earth. I believe Romeo has slept with with such bedtime stories.

Sometimes, miracles do happen. :)

Good examples are 李锦梅, 郑各平 and even 陈汉伟 and 郑惠玉. They were lousy actors for years too. Oh ya, and dun forget Hong Kong's 张曼玉.

Mmmmmmm......

Oh man, the glory days of Star Search. The winners would be catapulted straight into lead roles. Nowadays Star Search is like an afterthought to MediaCorp, they don't seem to have any plan to groom or promote most of the finalists and the heavily promoted artistes (like Elvin Ng and 6 out of the 7 Princesses) tend to be those who didn't enter through Star Search.

I found a blog post from 2010 saying MediaCorp signed 7 finalists from the Star Search 2010 batch: Jeffrey Xu (winner), Peggy Lin (1st runner-up), Adeline Lim (2nd runner-up), Romeo Tan, Sora Ma, James Seah and Darryl Yong. Of this batch only Romeo is heavily promoted, Adeline Lim has already left the scene, and I don't even remember Peggy Lin acting in any MediaCorp drama.

I wonder what happened with Zhou Ying (2007 batch)? They didn't offer her contract at first, then signed her two years later, then promoted her heavily and gave her roles in blockbuster dramas, then suddenly she seemed to 失宠 and then went back China.

I also wonder when the next Star Search will be? The last one was in 2010 so it's been 4 years liao.

Exactly,

In Devotion (2011) she was outshone by Taiwanese actress Cynthia Wang Xinru.

In Dream Makers (2013), she was the weakest link and everyone in Dream Makers were nominated for acting awards except her.

No lah. In the early days, Zoe Tay

I disagree.  Yes, Ou Xuan was really awful in dramas like Switched (2007) (where she played the spoilt bratty sister of Fann Wong) - her vocal pitch was too high and her intonation was unnatural.  But she gradually improved, experimenting with vocal acting in Breakout (2010), and giving a credible performance in China drama Precious (2012) opposite regional stars.

The jewel in her crown was definitely Dream Makers (2013), where the public, colleagues, the media and observers were unanimous in agreeing that she should have been crowned Best Actress.

And Ou Xuan will last the longest.  Joanne Peh is showing signs of fizzling out due to her inconsistent performances, while Rui En is only capable of the strong-woman-performance and nothing else.

( Experiment does not mean improvement. And how many of us really remember she acted in some China production? I dun even know about it. ) :(

( Yes she does have a beautiful crown of a princess, and it is filled with jewels known as "fans". I never really heard of anyone that I know saying that she should get the BA award, so I presume the "public" you mentioned constitutes only a small percentage of our local population, or to be specific, it refers to her fan club. ) :( :(

And Ou Xuan will last the longest. Joanne Peh is showing signs of fizzling out due to her inconsistent performances, while Rui En is only capable of the strong-woman-performance and nothing else.

( Inconsistent in performance will not last long. Capable of acting as a strong woman only will also not last long. But CONSISTENTLY showing the SAME kind of poor acting for different roles will last long????? ) :( :( :(

OX is the same category as LZ, a lot of hype but no substance. The only difference is LZ kelong once and got a best actress consolidation prize while OX is not even worth to kelong for.

How to award them when they are limited to acting as ah lians and retarded girls respectively only?

Ou Xuan has improved leaps and bounds when it comes to her enunciation, I'll give her credit for that. Compare Elvin Ng -- act for 9 years liao still mumble mumble.

A lot of Ou Xuan's colleagues seemed to be rooting for her to win BA this year. I wonder what the results would have been if Star Awards was decided by peer voting, LOL.

As for longevity, hard to say. If these three remain in MediaCorp then their longevity will depend on whether they can successfully transition into auntie roles like Xiang Yun and Chen Liping, because MediaCorp doesn't know how to write any other type of role for older actresses. I have a feeling Joanne Peh will move to China after marrying 715.

Isn't it obvious that Not all winners in the talent contests become superstars....

This is my simple observation from TVB Singing Contest.

You have to win the inaugural contest - like Anita Mui.

You still can have some fame if you are the winner of the 2nd installment - Lui Fang

The rest of the winners ... very forgettable.

Sometimes it is good not to end up winners because there may be more options...

Sammi Cheng, Leon Lai, Grasshopper are definitely more famous and wealthier than the winners of their competitions respectively.

Same here in Mediacrap...

Ann Kwok was suddenly catapulted to 三姐 although she was not in the top 3..Ivy Lee was the deserving winner that year.

陈毓云 became 五姐 even though she was only a semi-finalist...

Just like when you put Jeff Xu and Romeo. Andie Chen and Desmond Tan (both beef up alot after the competition)  side by side, who has the greater mass appeal? 。。

Winning a contest is just a baby step to fame.. the rest is hard work and a little luck...

Fame and fortune may not always go hand-in-hand.

With HuangBiRen coming back next year's star awards will be interesting.

Knowing how petty mediacorp is i doubt she will be given meaty roles. The last role that was supposed to be hers went to carol lin in tang shan dao nan yang.

A true star will excel in any role given to her.

Whereas a fraud with all hype and no real substance will fail even the meatiest role tailored for her.
