Remember what a "baddie" role did for Michelle Yim in that Moonlight Serenada/that mooncake serial?That is what a veteran should be.. always inventing and finding newer challenges ... Lisa Wang and Michelle Yim tried their hands in stage shows and even, Cantonese opera. Of course, they were properly trained during their Shaw Brothers and TVB/Rediffusion times.However at the rate of churning drama serials at Mediacrap, I believe this is one of the most remote wishing thinking of mine. The old hag cannot even match the acting chops of her peers.. Aileen got better roles and can switch between Channel 5 and 8... Even Pan Ling Ling is seen doing Mata-mata...Funny enough, up to mid-June now, the Queen has yet to be seen in any serial.... not even in those mini-series or variety shows on Channel U..... still wondering why they bother to "extend" her contract....Haha, I think Mediacrap is a very appropriate name. We can't compare local artistes to overseas ones, simply because competition is not stiff here. If people like Mark Lee and Kym can score as TV hosts even though they can't really express themselves fluently in proper English and Mandarin, you can imagine how easy it is to be a top artiste here compared to HK where people like Carol Cheng and Lisa Wang have been reigning for years.Carol and Lisa are so articulate, quick-witted, knowledgeable and flexible. They can host variety shows with humour as well as serious discussions with intelligence. Which of our local TV host can do it? Looking at how Brian acts cute on TV and still staying on top of the game makes me mourn for our local TV scene.As for acting, same thing, standard is low due to lack of stiff competition. I remember Madonna once said she wrote an 8 page letter to director of Evita on why she deserves the role. She even made use of a MV (Take a Bow) to convince the director that she can look Evita. Even the Queen of Pop knew her shortcomings (can't act and famous for being a superbitch) and had to fight hard for her role and ended up with a Golden Globe award. But our artistes here are more passive because they don't have to fight for roles or work. And I don't really see or hear them upgrading themselves to polish up their skills. Without stiff competition, our local artistes will lack the will power to fight for survival and will not keep on upgrading themselves. Hence, their hosting and acting skills will just remain at the levels which once propelled them to stardom. (But still better compared to the Msian artistes. ). And she gets second lead or co-lead type of roles which is better treatment than the roles Mediacorp gives to its own newbies like Jayley. I dunno, I actually prefer the current batch of newbies over last decade's batch of newbies. At least it looks more promising on the male side. Last decade really failed in producing leading men except for Qi Yuwu and Elvin Ng, and Elvin's acting cannot make it although he's nice to look at. Does anyone know why Mediacorp didn't sign Kimberly Chia? They signed the whole batch of teens from On The Fringe (Edwin Goh, Ian Fang, Elizabeth Lee) except for her. I remember Felicia Chin had just finished her A-levels when she joined Star Search. They probably could have donned school uniforms in their dramas and not looked overage. But at that time Channel 8 didn't seem very interested in filming teen dramas, so the newbies just made their debut in adult roles. In contrast Ian Fang, Xu Bin, Aloysius Pang were all over 20 when they acted as uniform-wearing students. Kimberly, Elizabeth, Edwin are acting their age though. Poor Joshua Ang was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
