That's a very good and insightful look at the fashion evolution of men's swimwear! Yes, I remember as a kid seeing a lot of the 80s and early 90s SBC dramas showing guys in speedos whenever they had pool or beach scenes. Nowadays . . . I believe that this current trend towards the boardshorts for men's swimwear is largely from America, and it's the result of the strange American homophobic reaction against the speedos. But it seems only Americans have this problem. (Americans have problems with a lot of things that people elsewhere around the world don't.) In Europe, Asia, especially Japan, and Australia, the speedos remains the trunk of choice for many men, and there is no homophobic reaction from people towards men wearing speedos. Sadly, because of America's powerful influence over the world's media, you mostly see guys wearing boardshorts on TV and in the movies during pool scenes, as mentioned. But if you watch the Ironmen competitions shown on Australian TV, for example, you will see all the male contestants wearing speedos. I think besides modesty being the issue, a lot of straight men are uncomfortable about having their bulge made so visible. Shorts tend to hide the bulge better than spandex. @CKW America is weird in a sense. In the 80s, you have many straight men wearing speedos because it was the norm, and some even ventured on thongs for those living in Miami, because it is what every one worse. There was this whole social and cultural campaign on being athletic, tanned, buffed, things in neon colours, etc. I have some colleague who showed me a picture of her dad and her when she was a kid in the 80s, and he was wearing speedos. Even she commented that it was norm for her as a child to see men in speedos compared to now. I agree, other countries outside of the US have less issues with men in speedos.
