To be honest, I do really have to agree with the ZB article. There needs to have some form of transparency in terms of votes such as, who are the judges and what are the judging criteria. I feel that the proportion of MediaCorp representatives should from 30-40% of the entire judging panel to avoid any favouritism. 
 

Take a look at international award shows, the Grammys and Academy Awards allows paying members to vote in the final rounds (after nomination) regardless if they are the nominees or not. On the other hand,  the judging panel for the Golden Horse is made up of credible industry players who will discuss and vote for the winner unanimously.

If the record holder is still Xie Shaoguang, there will be no issue. But because it is CHW, it feels very kelong, especially since he is the last 'Ah Ge' from the 90s that is still in MDC, since XSG, LNX, Chris Lee, TPH all left already.

 

Among the MDC leading men, I think Christopher Lee is the best actor.

 

Zoe Tay is good but for her to hold the record for most acting awards among female artistes? This is even more kelong. As the article mention, Huang Biren and Chen Liping are better actors and if Chen Liping was the one who holds the record, there won't be any controversy.

 

The problem with Star Awards acting awards is that ever since the early 2010s, the hot favourites never win and it's always some random person who wins (not even the dark horse). At least for Golden Horse or Academy Awards, it is very predictable who will win so there is little controversy over the winner.

 

But for Star Awards, just look at the last 10 years and the winner is always someone completely unexpected:

 

2010: Chen Li Ping (Fav: Ann)

2011: Rui En (Ok this one was predicted correctly)

2012: Joanne (Fav: Zoe/Fann/Ann)

2013: Rui En (Fav: Cynthia)

2014: Chen Li Ping (Fav: Jeanette)

2016: Jeanette (Ok this one was predicted correctly)

But i don't agree that just because someone is pegged as a "favourite" it means that they should win/are the best, because sometimes the favourite is just because the character is likeable or the person has more fans/louder fans. For example, 2014's Jeanette, 2018's Paige, or even 2021's Felicia. Did they have the best acting that year? Ummm no way so why were they the "pick" to win?

 

Where do you get the data for favourite though? Because like for 2013/14/15, there were predictions (zaobao, 8days, etc) that pegged the eventual winners as their pick. So even the definition of favourite is debatable don't you think? Also if I'm not wrong Rui En wasn't the favourite to win for 2017, it was Jesseca; same for 2019, the favourite to win was Fann not Joanne. And favourite is just popularity so there's the Top 10 award for that. 

 

So overall as much as I don't agree with some of the awardees on some years, I wouldn't necessarily think that changing the voting system would be a better alternative. Modelling it after the Grammy/The Academy's voting systems are pretty silly; it's like saying you don't have to watch the show but as long as you pay/have money you can decide on the winners - doesn't that sound like the Top 10 from previous years (every year you always hear people complain that you can get in just with money). When I say hot favourite, I meant the hot favourite among critics. Not among fans.

Generally the hot favourite tends to align between the public and the critics.

 

You look at 2021 predictions, the various publications all predicted Felicia or CLP.

These predictions were made by industry insiders, not random fans. 

Then out of nowhere Zoe Tay won the award. Obvious people are pissed. Just look at all the comments on social media bashing her kelong win.

 

As for past year SA predictions, you just need to google it to see who the hot favourites were at the time.

For example in 2019, the hot favourite was Joanne. It was the first time Joanne was the hot favourite to win seeing as her previous two wins were kelong. Fann was definitely not the hot favourite.
