"Silent Walls" was produced by Ochre Pictures, which was also behind local productions "Last Madame" and "Lion Mums". What happened Online LGBTQ+ publication Dear Straight People published an article on Apr. 3 calling out the portrayal of a gay couple in "Silent Walls". The article said that the couple, Kai De (played by Alfred Sun) and Nigel (played by Adam Chen), had a "problematic" large age gap. Nigel is Kai De's dance instructor. Dear Straight People opined that the pairing "reinforces the harmful stereotype that gay men are predators and groomers". They added: "Nigel has AIDs, which implies that he cheated on Kai De. (...) Not only does this problematic storyline strenghten (sic) the notion that gay men are all diseased and promiscuous, it also suggests that gay couples will always meet a tragic fate." About the show "Silent Walls" is described as a "dark mystery thriller surrounding a house across four eras of Singapore resulting in tragedy in each era". Nigel and Kai De were not the only couple who met with a tragic fate. Characters Liang Wenhui and Gu Zhenzhu, played by Ayden Sng and Tasha Low respectively, did not have a happy ending. Sng's character died after getting shot. They added that they aimed to "depict the struggles some families may face and [sought] to encourage more understanding and acceptance" with the characters' storyline. The spokesperson also added that there are two versions of "Silent Walls" — one being the PG version which was shown on television, and an NC16 version which is available on meWATCH. The PG version "does not explicitly reveal the mutual relationship between the adult characters (Kai De and Nigel)", while the NC16 version delves more into their relationship with depictions of care, love and concern". No grooming involved: Ochre Pictures Ochre Pictures clarified that there was no grooming involved in the show, as both characters were "consenting adults". Nigel was 36 and Kai De was 24. They added that there was no cheating involved as he was a "single adult male and was never married". The rep continued: "We cannot deny that these social issues (i.e. discrimination) existed in the 1980s, which is the very reason why our intent in this storyline was to show that a lack of empathy and understanding can have tragic consequences. Our stories and characters are authentic to the times, and have validity. It is our hope that through this story, viewers would be encouraged to put aside individual biases." In 2020, criticism was directed at “My Guardian Angels” (单翼天使) for its portrayal of a homosexual basketball coach played by Chase Tan, who is depicted as a gay paedophile with AIDs who sexually abuses numerous young boys. His character is eventually jailed with no redemption arc. Following the uproar, Mediacorp issued a statement explaining that they had “no intention to disrespect or discriminate against any persons or community”. However, it seems like Mediacorp has forgotten the past controversy, as evidenced by the fact that they have once again, portrayed the gay community in an unncessarily negative light. WHY SINGAPORE NEEDS TO STOP PUSHING NEGATIVE LGBT STEREOTYPES ON TV In Singapore, LGBT+ media representation is practically non-existent on mainstream media. The only time we see gay characters on TV is when they have AIDs. Singapore TV dramas may be on the decline. But they are still popular with middle aged conservatives, many of whom are parents of LGBT+ children. The elderly population typically already have distorted views about the gay community. By showcasing these outdated stereotypes on national TV, it only strengthens their antiquated convictions. This makes it even more difficult for parents to reconcile with their queer children. If it’s too much to request for positive LGBT depictions in popular media, then I prefer no representation of LGBTQ+ in mainstream media. What dearstraightpeople overlooked was that the stance by the broadcast media, rating and guidelines have not changed so far, even after 377A was abolished... Probably, all the TV film makers are also in the "elderly" age range as their spectators... Actually, the elderly population is probably already more open minded on homosexuality than the TV film makers... Just wonder how many times a script is read before any film is made... Strangely, the local newspapers are full of LGBT topics... it always looks like different sections pull at different ends of a rope... They all look damn awkward performing their dance numbers Especially the veterans, it's an insult forcing all these respected veterans to perform on stage like monkeys. The rising stars even worse, all looked like they were being tortured. Most were black face throughout the performance Most weird is the rebecca and felicia portion. Why they doing some weird sign language dance?? In the end because of all this weird performances, the winners of the Most Popular Rising Stars don't even get chance to give acceptance speech; makes it seem like their award is the most useless. The timing was also off, until Lee Teng had to ask Sammi stupid questions just to pass time. This year SA really damn cock compared to previous years.
