G_M
And the Category is... 302: A Fundraiser for a Singapore LGBTQ Short Film 302 tells the dramatic tale of an officer cadet who declares his homosexuality during his National Service in late-2000s Singapore. About this event Based on a true story, 302 explores a young man's untold story under Category 302 i.e. Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) personnel classified as “homosexuals, transvestites, paedophiles, etc.“ To bring this film to life, join us in raising $30,200 with the Emmy-nominated director and BAFTA-winning producer of 302 at the newly refurbished Projector X: Picturehouse in the historic Cathay Building. Why now? As we wait for Section 377A to be repealed, there is still a long way before Singaporean LGBTQ people achieve equality in areas such as media representation, housing, censorship, recognition of our relationships and more. Because of these inequalities, it is near impossible to get government grants or funding to make this film. We have tried applying to the Singapore Film Commission but were unsuccessful. With 302, we hope to shine a light on an experience that not many people know of and that many don’t talk about in hopes that policies and perceptions will change. Due to the lack of enough LGBTQ imagery in Singapore’s media, we feel very strongly this film needs to be made. This film is dedicated to all who served their nation quietly, loudly, and proudly. Programme About the director Leon Cheo is the creator, writer and director of the Emmy®-nominated short form series “People Like Us”. His “SIN-SFO” won Best Live Action and Best Director at the 2019 National Youth Film Awards in Singapore and premiered in-competition at the Academy Award-qualifying 25th Austin Film Festival. "302" along with "SIN-SFO" and "Two Is Enough" will complete a trilogy of short films about the human consequence and impact of policy. Most recently, he was one of the ten filmmakers selected for the Hillman Grad / Indeed Rising Voices program in which he is mentored by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi, Just Mercy, Short Term 12) to make Leon’s latest short film “The 25th Filial Exemplar” which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival 2022. About the producer Ser En is a BAFTA-winning Singaporean producer, whose live action and animated short films “Poles Apart”, “Present”, “Let Me Kill My Mother First”, have been screened and won awards at over 80 international film festivals. Ser En graduated with a BFA in Filmmaking from Nanyang Technological University with First Class Honours in 2013, and a MA in Producing from National Film and Television School in 2017.
