First, have you worked & stayed there for at least few months (or even years) before considering the move? Sorry, it seems you have not & it sounded silly.  If you have, you would have easily talk about it with the Asians/locals there

I also thought of it. But have you checked the tax rates? It’s quite crazy. Everything you earn, they take nearly half.

I agreed with this. Just saw a HK influencer moving his family to UK, only to come back after a few months if not mistaken. Imagine all the costs for packing and moving their stuff. The hassle to pack and unpack. Find school again for children.

I stayed in the UK for a year. Prior to that, I had a rosy picture of the country. Don’t get me wrong, the people I hanged out with  treated me warmly & till this day, I still visit them once every few years. But to stay there as a resident? Not for me as I find it difficult to blend in as an Asian & I couldn’t cope with the winter blues

People living in UK be like "wow this Singaporeans think they can just moved to our country and take advantage of us like it's their entitlement..." 

 

Its seriously no different than an American moving to Singapore because he loves it here. It's not that easy. 

 

Mexican moving to America not so easy. American moving to China, not so easy. Even japanese moving to Malaysia also not so easy... 

 

And here we have a gay couple Singaporean whose world view is so limited they want you to move to another country just because they unhappy with their own country of birth... 

 

Actually better. Free up 2 citizenship so that 2 citizenship can be given to prc China... Good good.

Did you actually Check anything before putting this up? You literally just need to be in the UK for 5 years and you can get citizenship. If you find a job there, it’s not that difficult. MUCH easier than than getting PR here.

Since Brexit the whole immigration in the UK is screwed up.

 

There are plenty of reports of people treated obnoxiously by the UK bureaucrats.

 

Currently with the Tory government the willingness to allow foreigners to stay in UK is quite limited.

 

They also have a heavy backlog of untreated cases and applications and since there are plenty of Europeans having serious issues to settle their stay in the UK also,

you might face delays and difficulties.

 

Unless, you are a big investor or known star, I would seriously consider moving to the UK.

 

Exceptions may take place if you have one of the following jobs qualifications:

 

List of 9 In-Demand Jobs in the UK for 2023

• Programmers and Software Developers.
• Cyber Security Specialists.
• Health Services and Residential Care.
• Architects.
• Graphic Designers.
• Physical Scientists.
• Sales Assistant.
• Operations Manager.

 

But with current reluctant environment, I don't have much hope for anyone.

 

For gays: If you are married or intend to marry your male partner, take a look how the UK treats married straight couples with one foreigner, then you may rethink on this avenue also.

 

Regret that the outlook is not good, but I don't want to paint any rosy picture. You may look for alternatives.

 

How about Ireland or any other country in Continental Europe???

Those people who never lived in the UK please do not talk about discrimination of Asians.

 

It is such a prejudice for Asians to come up with such critic.

 

As long as you are hard working and humble person, nobody will critic you or discriminate you in the UK. You have to blend into the society and best is to adapt good English (so no Singlish lah). Oh, and maybe don't open a 24/7 neighbourhood shop... 😂

 

Discrimination may apply for ill behaving tourists from China (or maybe those super Kiasu from Singapore, who are a bit out of touch how things work overseas).

 

Critical is your command of English and your best efforts to integrate into the British society.

 

Note that the common British also bully French or German citizens...

They just can't let history go...

 

 

Maybe you take a look at the Ministers in the past 15 years in the UK and you will see how changes are present.

 

Sure you are met with stereotypes. but if you can identify with a decent British sounding accent people won't put you in such categories.

 

Singaporeans are mostly highly respected in the UK (sure some lower educated wouldn't know where it is...)

 

 

By the way just take a look how some Filipina spouses of Caucasian expats are treated here in Singapore when locals think they encounter with a maid...

i’m just looking out for blindspots before we move there. my partner is quite set to move to London because of his work. i know its not a pretty picture, hence asking for opinions now

every individual is unique and suitable for a unique lifestyle. one has to understand the pros and cons with a culture before considering a migration.

every person has their own preferred lifestyle. these youtubers has their personal lifestyle which might or might not suit another. UK is huge when compare to SG. in some area, pace of life would be slow while others are fast pace. so it is easier for people which lived a different lifestyle to find a place which charter for them. Singapore being a small island has already develop a slight difference in lifestyle between the east and west let alone in the UK.

it depends, certain things are more expensive and others more expensive. food is cheaper if you cook prepare your own but transport is expensive. therefore if you dun need to travel too much, i believe it could save you time and monies. accommodation is always expensive in cities.

Yes, it is quite the same as Singapore except: 

- Not so safe, especially in the evening, do avoid dark lanes. So can’t go out till 2-3am & still feel safe. 

- transport; the workers can go on strike & the whole transportation can come to a stand still (day or days)

- people; as minorities, be prepared for discrimination

- finding a job; far from easy as compared to Singapore since you need sponsorship 

- acceptance as gay person; just because it is ang mo country does not mean it will be fully embraced, there will still be discrimination 

- tax; depending on your income bracket, easily 30-45%

- weather; can have up to 4 seasons within a day, nice when you first experienced it. Can be gloomy 2/3 of the year

- law enforcers; if you get into trouble & needed help from police, do not expect the proactive effort as they are there more to create crime deterrence, not so much as to solve them 

- hygiene. People can peep anywhere. Using a public toilet can cost up to 2 pounds 

In conclusion, your friend is pretty right, generally quite the same as Singapore  

 

PS : Noted you have a boy friend who is going to work in London & I wish you guys stay together forever. . But you sounded like you have not live outside of Singapore over a period of time. In case your boy friend leaves you & you ended up alone in a foreign country, I advise you to do your own homework.

There are some SG citizen who is also treated as 2nd class citizen. Now you finally get to feel what it is like to be a minority.

Moving overseas permanently is a very major life-changing experience

You must do extensive research, and more importantly, be prepared for the 

prospect that things WILL go wrong somewhere down the line

And crucially, ask yourself - what will you do at that point?

Actually, the most important for having any chances to immigrate to the UK is probably to have secured a job. Then the company, your employer , might elevate your case.

 

If your partner is also not a British citizen, I would assume, if you are officially married, it may also help to receive a status.

 

Travelling out of UK and back again, might be risky if one of you both doesn't have a status, as on return entry may be rejected.

 

You should also have some thoughts, whether it should be London, as the city is quite expensive and living in the outskirts might not be that interesting, so check on other options also.
