Learning Japanese Language

Nice.
Can share which online site? (Can pm me if not convenient.)

4 areas:

1,2) Read and Write - I find this easier to learn using books and apps like Duolingo
3) Listen - I find this the hardest as it is difficult to catch when the speech is very fast

4) Speak - depends a lot on my vocabulary

hence decided to bite the bullet and take up a course. Hopefully force me to ‘listen’ and ‘speak’ more.

N5 is pretty much a waste of money and time... Why do you want to learn it? If it's just to communicate while in Japan, textbooks won't help because spoken and written Jap are quite different. Chatting with someone helps a lot. Constantly exposing, consuming Jap media is one of the fastest ways to learn.

If you wanna find work with it, brush up properly, take formal lessons. JLPT N2/N1 is what you need then subsequently a BJT depending on the company you applied for. You don't have to go through the whole ranking of N5-N3 to take N2/N1

Know what u mean… learning language is of course best done by immersing oneself in it.

I don’t learn very well by just listening to Jap Hour or anim as I am more visual than audio learner. Hence yup I’m taking a formal class to interact with like-minded people of roughly same standard to improve my listening / spoken Japanese.  Then hopefully help me understand Jap programmes without subtitles.

As for JLPT, yup I will try to go as far as I can, N5 is first step for newbie like me ◡̈.

Just learning for self interest 🤗

Agree with Iori. Just watch anime will do. 20 yrs ago im trying for JLPT lv2 and i forgot all of it today 🤣 watching anime no prob but i cant really converse well when i visited japan.

ha ha true if not much chance to practice.

I dun think it’s all lost though.

I too learnt French years ago and forgotten most of the stuff. But when I flipped through my old textbooks, they do come back to mind. Hence if u do some revision, they should come back. Trust our brains ha ha

@MikeC Did you managed to find a class to help you learn Japanese?

I just came back from a road trip in Kyushu and I think I will enjoy my future Japan road trips more if I can engage in basic conversations with the locals rather than using translations apps as a medium. Also can spend my skillsfuture credits! 😀

Anyone has experience with https://bunkalang.com/ ? Seems like the most "go-to" on the myskillsfuture website.

sorry have not gone into this thread for sometime.  Yup has been learning for close to a year. Depends on ur needs - some prefer conversation. I like courses that do all 4 (read, write, listen, speak), grammar, vocab etc Jap teacher also shares about culture n nuances in speaking.

Has pm u with info in case u r interested.

any good books for self learning or websites / apps

Kinokuniya (Bugis) has a whole shelf on Japanese books, including one on “Making Out in Japanese” 😝

I am using Minna No Nihongo for my formal Japanese class, with Japanese teacher.  For self learning though, maybe try “Genki An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese” (Ermm Shoppee has cheap version…)

Ha ha I think difficult lah… I recall that for my first lesson, we introduced ourselves n why we want to learn Jap. I can just imagine my teacher’s and classmates’ expression if I said is to understand AV 😅

realistically speaking, what I learned in first year of elementary Jap won’t help in understanding AV - maybe only intro to age, occupation, かわいい、おおきい😅
