Yeah, I've seen The Boyfriend on Netflix. It's pretty entertaining if you're into romantic comedies with a bit of a twist. The characters are fun and the plot has some unexpected moments that keep it interesting. Definitely worth a watch if you’re looking for something light and amusing!

Romantic comedy. lol.  Interesting characterization!

I initially thought Dai was the oldest  LOL

I like Dai, Taeheon, and Kazuto.

Ryota looks a bit sickly.

Shun seems a bit negative and easily triggered. The guy's carrying too much emotional baggage.

The gogo dancer seems nice but he's too muscular and high maintenance for my taste.

I feel that Dai is lying about his age.

He is clearly in his 30s, about the same age range as Taeheon, or maybe even older.

He doesn't look 23 at all.

Shun is also 23, and he looks his age; Dai doesn't.

Oh no there's a new guy, a loud one at that! 😂

Shun is an extremely negative and tiring person to be around, Dai will give up soon.

I want to see more of Kazuto, Usak and Taeheon, and far far less of the boring Dai-Shun couple.

Hopefully we get more on the other guys soon. Dai-Shun-Ryota getting a bit too much focus.

Also, very curious who's t, b and v...

Dai's clearly a player.  Not the right fit for Shun.  Shun probably needs more of a big brother figure, even though he prefers someone young...like the guy mentioned above, he has a lot of emotional baggage to deal with.  Can't blame him, victim of circumstance.

T, b, v?

Who are they? You mean there are still somemore guys joining the show?

Also, at the end of ep 3, I really wonder what made Shun say that he might lose interest in Dai.

The way the JP guys talked - slow, soft and demure ... it makes the pace of the show quite slow, less exciting and less drama than the western reality gay show.

Maybe it could also be the background music ... slow and sentimental. 😅

I know what you mean, and I actually like it, the way the guys are generally so polite and friendly with each other in Korean and Japanese reality shows. It's a refreshing change for me.

I personally cannot stand the loud, brash and aggressive behaviour of the guys in American reality shows, where they trash-talk each other non-stop.

In ep 3, during the barbeque dinner where they were discussing about politics, you can tell that Dai was drunk and a bit high  LOL

I precisely like the slow, relaxed and laid back vibe of the show.

Don't like those American reality shows where it is always so tense and edgy, like we don't already get enough of that in the office   LOL

In ep 1, the letter-writing exercise, this is the summary:

Taeheon wrote to Kazuto

Kazuto wrote to Dai

Gensei wrote to Dai

Ryota wrote to Dai

Dai wrote to Shun

Shun wrote to no one

I like Taeheon.

He strikes me as handsome, disciplined, matured, down-to-earth, intelligent, well-educated, knows when to be serious and when to have fun, has leadership potential yet also a good team player, and not needy or attention-seeking.

I felt very sorry for him in ep 1 when he didn't get a letter in his mailbox.

I kinda wanna be part of the peanut gallery watching all the things unfold.

Also quite surprised Usak is getting so little of a feature. I'm surprisingly invested but also woefully reminded of how single I am.

Oh noooooooooo Usak!!! 😭

I'm glad Ikuo comes in between Dai and Shun 🤣 Shun is emo + princess syndrome 🙄

Kazuto is really good looking, but his personality is quite reserved and taciturn, pushy Alan probably scared him off.

Dai is really short and small sized!

I was thinking the same  LOL

I didn't realise how short Dai was because most times I see him either seated or standing alone.

Also, I feel sad that everyone seems to be overlooking Taeheon. I think he likes Kazuto but he's a gentleman so he doesn't openly or aggressively try to make Kazuto notice him, unlike Alan.

Kinda feel bad for Taeheon that there's no romantic interests or buddies for him currently. He seems to be very reserved. Usak was reserved too but at least he got to say what he felt. Hopefully episodes 7 to 10 changes that.

On the other hand, Shun is sending all sorts of mixed signals and gaslighting Dai into thinking he's too aggressive. Makes me wonder what really happened in his previous relationships when he said he was hurt badly.

Yeah, I don't like Shun's mood swings and inconsistent signals. Dai's gonna move on from him eventually.

But somehow I feel that Ikuo's gonna end up hurting Dai even more. His "I like to be pampered very much" statement seems like a red flag to me.

Yeah, man. He's like blowing hot and cold with Dai.

He rests his head on Dai's lap, then pushes Dai's hand away.

He tells Dai they should remain friends, then gets pissed when Dai and Ikuo spend time together at the picnic.

Actually, it doesn't matter if Shun is introverted and Dai is extroverted. They can still be compatible.

In fact, in many straight relationships, one party is extroverted and the other is introverted. It creates a balance in the dynamics.

Dai has never made Shun feel that he should talk more or laugh more or show more emotion.

But Shun seems to keep on finding fault with Dai's outgoing and vibrant personality, which is very unfair to Dai.

Poor Dai. He is not aggressive at all. He's very sweet and gentle.

Alan is the aggressive one.

I won't be surprised if Shun's ex-boyfriends all left him because they got tired of his mood swings.

I like the most recent episodes (4 and 5) - a lot more depth than the first few which mainly concentrated on Dai and Shun.

I was wondering if the Producers made a mistake casting Usak and Alan.

Usak is a Gogo boy and thats almost like casting a half porn star - I mean who would dare approach such 'God'like figures (if you get my drift)  by way of dating?

Alan is also typically non Japanese - action, dressing and direct way of talking. How would a Japanese person react to this?

But perhaps that is the reason why they were introduced - to show that deep down, people are still looking for love/companionship.

Comments from the panel are spot on and humorous - they read the participants well.

I feel that Usak is a better fit for Kazuto than Alan. Alan is bubbly and outgoing which is probably why people are initially attracted to him but Kazuto has a relatively quiet and thoughtful nature which is why Usak's character might be a better fit. However, Usak's work and lifestyle does take a bit of adapting to - what does a Gogo boy do when he ages? Perhaps there is a future for Usak in Manga.

In any case, this Japanese attempt is much better than any other previous ones - the Hong Kong one put me right off and I think there was an American one too. I will not be surprised if the Thai's come up with a version.

Just started watching out of curiosity and it’s getting rather intriguing!

Not as raucously sensational as those Western pseudo reality shows, yet it has its gripping and humorous moments.

Just a few preliminary takeaway thoughts after 2 episodes:

1. Dai is the cutest and he knows it and should have the upper hand and it shows

2. Shun is the princess syndrome 公主病 victim player, emotional vampire, relationship taker-sponge, with rather bland and dour looks that I don’t even know why others are tripping themselves over

3. Ryota has the most unique and outstanding facial features, and quite probably more adept at reading the room than some

4. Kazuto is the more sincere — if not most — and grounded among the group, and quite likely a keeper on the long run race

Wonder how the Singapore version is like (if there is or will be one by Netflix, Disney+ etc.)? All will speak Singlish ah and won't be so polite and mild mannered like the Japanese guys? 😆

Taeheon is actually my favourite.

But yeah, it's a pity the other guys seem to sideline him.

I wonder if it's because he's older (past 30), or if it's because he's Korean

Yeah. It'll be filled with Singlish and uncultured behaviour. I'll never watch the Singapore version.

If I wanted to experience living with other S'porean guys my age, I'd just go for my ICT and stay in.

I think the casting of Usak and Alan is deliberate.

They probably wanted to add some spice and drama into the group dynamics by bringing in provocative and unconventional characters.

I agree too that Alan isnot a good match for Kazuto.

I personally think Taeheon would be a good match for Kazuto.

Guest Chores

I liked the parts where they showed the guys doing household chores like folding the laundry, washing the dishes, mopping the floor, wiping the bathroom, watering the plants.

It's part of Japanese culture where schoolkids are taught from young to develop a sense of belonging in a place by helping to keep it clean.

I don't think the participants do that in American reality shows

Kazuto is the most straight-acting among the guys, besides Taeheon.

Plus he's seen as financially-stable, which is another attractive quality in a guy, whether gay or straight.

And he's overall a very humble and considerate guy. It doesn't hurt that he is young and handsome too!

No wonder he has so many guys fighting over him! I suspect Taeheon secretly likes him too!

he's too low-profile, i totally forgot about his existence until ep. 6 when he was highlighted. lol

i can understand Shun in that it's very hard for an introvert to have to keep up with a super-extrovert's energy. eg. like when Dai was making all the exclamatory remarks, an introvert may feel compelled to have to "echo" or at least show sufficient level of enthusiasm so as to not "disappoint" the extrovert, and that can be super tiring.  But agree too that the mood swing coupled with the lack of communication is a terrible combi.

Kazuto is super my type! cute, straight-and-sunshine-boy feel, but the show must have been taped long ago...just checked out his IG and he's certainly put on a lot of weight!! which only makes me think that had Usak not left so abruptly, they might actually have a chance (ie. Kazuto is really into muscle and his comment that he didn't feel he's good enough for Usak was genuine, not just trying to be polite)!  It's a pity after Usak shared his last thoughts with Kazuo, he didn't give him a chance to respond, and just ended it that way. 😕
