The Boyfriend on Netflix

Recommended Posts

The last 2 episodes were full of emotional 'roller coaster ride' eh, but I thought it was also like a little 'rushed through' as well...

Anyway, it was pretty heartwarming for their final coffee truck business and it sure ended on a good note for them!

If Dai was who he really was (and not putting up an 'act' in the show), his character was rather mature and portrayed a good partner to be with for sure - despite the fact that he looked well older than his age at 23, haha.

**********

I believe the actual event of the show took place quite a while back, or maybe even a year or more ago. It might be good if they could do 1 'final episode' on how are they getting on after the event period - such as how was Taeheon coping with coming out to his parents (hopefully it went well) and if the couple(s) are still together after all these months... It definitely would put a nice end to the show with a few minutes of air time for all the 9 participants (just nice to make 1 episode), haha.

Happy - is what we should be, always.

Yes, fantastic idea. I wonder if the producers considered this. A lot would depend on what the situation is now - if everyone went their own way and carried life from thereon, it might be a bit sad i.e. there really is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. But that would be reality, right? Then again, realistically, one should not expect that much from a 30 day social experiment.

What is good is that a show like this can be made by mainstream media (Netflix) and whatsmore in a country as conservative as Japan! So, am hoping that this is the opening for more PLU-like/related shows.

I never consider Japan ‘conservative’ - they are like the king of AV and GV porn lol. In fact i think they have been slow in ‘non-porn’ content given how Thailand is already ahead in BL content.

Taeheon’s departure scene from the boys … I cried with tissue paper on standby (his coming out to parents + developed friendship etc.) … looking forward to The Boyfriend 2.

actually they just might considering how well the reception is. the twitter stans are going siao with the DaiShun nonsense, they spilling wedding fantasies and stuff. Sometimes stans ruin the experience.

These 2 are my fav,

but im really bored with the dai shun focus, and have no interest in them. Dai might appeal to some guys but not for me; shun is just a red flag for relationship, he will drain you out mentally.

Thanks Guys for recommending the Reality Show ... your reviews, sharing ... I truly enjoyed watching all 10 episodes.  I laughed with them.  I teared with them. I felt their warmth, hurt, disappointment, joy, etc. Gonna miss the Boyfriend!

Wonder if there's a 2nd Season?

Yeah. Ryota looks sickly to me, like he's either on drugs, not eating enough, or having some health issues.

Somehow, I am still convined that Dai is not really 23.

Kazuto is in his late 20s and he looks way younger than Dai.

Dai looks late 30ish to me.

Won't be surprised he lied about his age.

I felt very sad when Gensei left the house prematurely.

I think he was heartbroken that Ryota wasn't into him, and that there was no more chance of them being together.

So him staying on in the green room probably became too painful for him.

Just finished watching the episode of “The Boyfriend” in Netflix last night and it was a really great movie.

I laughed a lot and cried a lot. I like Dai, Usak and Tae. The person I hate seeing the most is Shun. Oh my gosh, Shun is such a dramatic, negative, sensitive, emotional, childish and high-maintenance princess.

I don't know why Dai fell in love with him. Dai deserves better, even though he looks like a player, most importantly he is mature and he knows what he wants.

Dai and Shun would be miserable together, and I definitely don't see a good future for Dai and Shun's relationship. It won't last long!

All in all, I think Kazuto would make a good couple with Usak, but can't see a match for Alan. Their personalities look very different.

So what happened to Tae? He is handsome, has a hot and sexy figure, and has his own career. It seems that in this video, Tae is the most neglected one! His role is limited and no one chooses him! He deserves to be loved and he is so handsome. If I were a cast member, I would definitely choose Tae.

Gensei and Kyuto would be a good match if they loved each other, but it looks like they are playing a love triangle.

Overall this movie is great, I wonder if there will be a second season? Or do you have any similar movie recommendations?

Dai, Tae and Usak are my choices! Loved seeing them!

“Fill your life with adventures, not things!”

Have stories to tell, not stuffs to show off -

So Netflix is pleased that the series is a success? That’s why there is reunion show of the boys and commentators?

If the show was staged, I think Shun ruin his reputation of being a petty boy. Lol. He will drain Dai for long term if they are together, just replace Shun face with the least popular guy's face but with Shun's personality....do you think Dai will still like him? Haha.

I don’t think it’s staged, but I do agree with you. If Shun wasn’t a pretty boy, Dai wouldn’t have stuck out this long.

Even watching the latest YouTube reunion, Shun got very upset because Dai didn’t eat the sashimi he bought. I was like “are you serious?”.

Shun is problematic and I hope he gets the therapy he needs. It’s just a matter of time where Dai has enough of the constant fighting and finds another pretty boy.

My feelings exactly about Taeheon.

A lot of times in relationships, people prefer a fun and exciting partner over a good, stable and matured partner.

Happens a lot in straight relationships also.

I frankly don't know what Dai sees in Shun. He's not even handsome or cute, in my opinion.

With Dai's looks and personality, he can easily land another guy.

I also believe Dai will be worn out by Shun's antics and mood swings eventually, and move on.

Yup. Shun tires people. Shun's mood and emotion fluctuates ... unstable.

Tough to maintain such relationships

I watched that video.

Shun wasn't upset that Dai didn't eat the sashimi. He was upset because Dai accused him of eating all the sashimi when he (Shun) had only taken one.

Actually, other guys would just laugh over such a remark by Dai, or ignore it.

But Shun got mad about it, and during the argument, they even knocked a whole pot of food over.

i think Shun should learn to be less of a prick, and be more appreciative of Dai.

I thought Tae said (around 48:00) he went out with 5 (younger) guys as casual dates after the show ... but sadly "nothing happened".

Wonder if Japanese society/people are tolerant with LGBTs? More than SG?

Agree and I think he knows it too as he indicates he has only recently experienced dating younger guys. I think his quietness and the way he thinks and behaves is "older/more mature" than the rest of the cast there. I do like his new hairstyle - think it suits him more.

The panelists have done a very good job on moving the discussion along - they managed to give everyone some time to speak and have moved from one topic to the other without any obvious jarring/non-continuity. Either very good skills or very clever editing.

Gensei surprised me - he talked a lot more on this episode than on the other ones or maybe he did talk as much on the other shows too but those bits were edited out. He does have an endearing sense of self-humour, talking about how short he is and how he wants to be tall.

Early on in this topic, a BW'er mentioned the Korean take on a Gay reality show, His Man. I had a look and it was such a turn-off.  The participants had sort of the same look but the part that turned me off the most was the comment on looks and clothes and how people seem to be so self centered - "What was your first impressions of me?". "How did I come across to you when we first met?". These were questions directed at the other person but it was all "me, me, me". I gave up after watching about 20 minutes.
