Life advices for a newbie in the corporate world

Just stepped into the corporate world and started a job. Please give me some brutal truths, useful and unconventional life advices for a newbie like me. Thanks 🥹

Keep your private live private.

Be friendly to and stay close to your enemies.

I am extrovert so it is easy for me to know who is the one who angkat...toxic...red flag...drama...emo...

 

Oh I make friend with anyone in the office including the cleaners vendors etc....u have no idea how advantages I have in my hand with black n white haha

I like Warren Buffett's quote: "You can always tell someone to go to hell tomorrow." Don't spout off in a moment of anger at work. 

 

Build bridges, not walls with people.

Know that you got hired because your skills/knowledge/experience matched what they are looking for. If someone at work tells you otherwise, then the problem is not with you but them.

at work: your colleagues are not your friends. Be cordial, join them for lunch, be a team player, but don't share stuff with them you wouldn't say to your reporting officers or directors

 

outside work: set aside as much as you can to invest. Buy bank stocks and precious metals early (though gold and silver now is at an ATH...)

1) never tell people at work your next move.

2) vent to your close friends who are not related to work.

3) be kind, show grace.

4) do not stay angry for too long, the world still moves on whether you like it or not.

Don't be an unsung hero at work. And don't think your work will speak for itself.

 

It is your responsibility to yourself to make the impact of your work known to your boss. Of course don't be a dick and sabotage other ppl, but don't be naive and think that if you put your head down and quietly do work in the background, you will be appreciated for it.

 

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, did it really fall? In the workplace, the answer is no. Even if you spent two months chopping the damn tree. Haha.

Always ensure your skills are in demand in the industry & make sure the tasks your company assigned to you lead to that. A way to track this is to update your skills in your CV once every 6 months & search in LinkedIn if there are companies looking for these skills.

Be judiciously competitive. Predict and find ways to overcome potential threats. Find and fill up niches with solid work.

You may not want to "Friend" your colleagues as your Facebook.  Keep your private life to yourself, as others here have already suggested.

1)   Don't overshare your personal or private stories. 

2)  Learn as much skills as possible from your workplace and colleagues.  Build your work experiences, not gossip.

 

3)  To achieve item (2), join your colleagues for lunch,  if they invited you, and warm them up to willingly impart their work knowledge to you.  

 

4)  Alternative to option 3),  stock up some tibits in your drawer.  Offer them to your colleague when you feel they needed something to munch during

    midday.   It is a time tested and provened  PR tactic to build up your positive image to them.  Most boss loves to see such friendly worker in office. 

 

 

5)   Talk bad about your boss, a senior colleague and manager is a taboo.  If they knew, they will misuse their authority and make your life like hell.

6)   As newbies without experiences,  some stress is necessary akin to clearing tough obstacles.  Early stress offers strong foundation and get you immune to 

       your lifetime of corporate journeys.   Emotional experiences + Work Experiences = Job Suvival = Money = Fufilling your dreams.      

 

7)    Try to rest as much as possible during your early career life.  Avoid hectic and stressful places with loud music, partying and alcoholic.  Getting constant hangover kills your survival kills, and you more likely to commit more mistakes in work

 

😎   Avoid taking too much leaves and MC during office busy period. Not everyone is forgiving when they are short-handed.

 

9)    Have your table fully stocked with all the necessary stationeries, folders,  even if you need to pay them yourself.  It keeps you organised and neat.  No point stopping your an task just because you are short of scissors, stappler or scotchtape.  Borrowing from colleague add inconviencnes to everyone in the office.

 

10)  List down a task you need to do in a day.  Relying on memories can be risky.  Having everything jotted down provides clear certainty ahead, instead of last minute surprises or worries.   Time flies and day ended swiftly when you are busy.

 

The above 10 pointers are basic on human relationship you need to watch.    I have intermediate and advanced pointers, but didn't want to overload you for now.
