What are the songs (in any languages) that will make you cry? And why? Is it the lyric or the melody? Or the songs both your ex(s) and you love to listen to together?

Please paste the youtube links here. Thanks

One of the main factors influencing your emotions is melody. A melody can exist without a song, but the opposite is not true. While a sad melody with joyful lyrics will make you feel down, a sad melody with cheerful lyrics will not.

+1 here ... there's many songs that are incredibly sad but the melodies are happy and tuneful eg. Lovefool and that japanese classic Sukiyaki.

sad songs but the musical arrangements suggests otherwise

Can you please explain how ( a sad melody )  with joyful lyrics make you feel different than one with cheerful lyrics?

The words in songs won't make me cry, they don't affect my feelings.  Words... are words.  But it is the MUSIC,  melody + harmony,  that strongly influences my feelings.  And what the musical center in my brain reacts to is the BEAUTY in music.  So the result is mostly happy,  often  stimulating some tears. :)

One of the most DIVINE songs of all times:

What is she singing?  I don't know, I don't remember, and  I don't care.   IT HAS MADE ME CRY!    The melody?  Of course!  It is an aria from Mozart's famous opera "Figaro's wedding",  full of wonderful music.  A very uplifting, happy opera.   Is this melody sad or joyful?  Characterization inapplicable.  The music is divine, resulting in not one single sad neuron in my brain.

This particular orchestral rendition of Cucurrucucu Paloma (an onomatopoeia for the mournful sound a dove makes) which I first encountered in Wong Kar Wai’s Happy Together always gets me. Absolutely perfect when set against the footage of the Iguazu Falls in the film:

Very layered in lyrics and storytelling. It always makes me cry. Sniffling, tears pouring out kind of cry.

Something about how it reminds me of what it is like growing up. The casual way hateful language is thrown around and used to comedic effect. About how a man like Kendrick is speaking to the non-gays about how such casual hate can damage the people around you. About how a man like that can convey such a story of positive growth is very healing to me. Like there is hope.

I was also impacted by the phrase " The day I chose humanity over religion ".   All organized religions should hear this,  shouted at them in their faces, of how inhumane the religious fantasies they created are,  all in their pursuit of gaining their false power over humanity...

And, the person who said this!  The education level of people in society depends on their race, ethnicity, skin color... but none of this makes any difference in their essence.  It has taken an eternity, but this is starting to become evident.

  • 2 weeks later...

Alasdair Fraser, Natalie Haas - Gloomy Winter's Now Awa'

Kateřina García - Gloomy Winter Now Awa

The sung version somehow not as destructive as the instrumental due to the limited room for projection. Just my subjective assumption.
