On Saturday, 29 March 2025, a reporter asked Minister K Shanmugam, PAP election candidate for Nee Soon GRC, about lawyer and LGBT activist Deryne Sim.
Transcript:
Reporter: The Opposition actually made some comments about the potential candidate, Ms (Deryne Sim). Do you have any comments about it?
K Shanmugam: I have never said that she is a potential candidate. You know, this whole thing has been put up by others. "Oh, she's seen with me, and therefore she is a potential candidate. And therefore... ", you know. So people write up and people talk about it. Have I said anything in public? Yeah. So I haven't said anything. And one musn't assume, therefore that, you know, whoever is seen  is a potential candidate.

I always find this fellow very sneaky and insincere. Why just can't admit it's test balloon. She's obviously there with him to test public reception abt her being a potential candidate. Or else what ? To be there coz too free ?

I agree with you, but there is very little a politician could do at this point.

Option 1. admit it's a test balloon?? isn't this just an own goal lol - no politician of the right mind would do this

Option 2. not use test balloon strategies and field candidates based on conviction (eg. if they are truly for lgbt equality then continue with the candidate even if there is public backlash) -- given that they are in it to win it, lgbt equality certainly won't be a hill that they are willing to die on.

Option 3. giving this sneaky and insincere answer... or a better more polished answer that a savvy politician could give, but is ultimately of the same essence.

Treating gay people like a lab guinea pig is extremely offensive.  Anyway, nobody cares how we feel.

Actually I beg to differ. It would've been traumatising to put someone up for election and then let her kena from opposition parties, kena from conservative whitedot groups, etc. just for promoting LGBTQ rights.

Im in the civil service and trust me, EVERYTHING the govt does has gone thru the test balloon phase. If it's officially announced, it has probably been tested, piloted, whether using balloon, helicopter or airplane. Im sure politics is no different from the civil service's approach, if not even more paranoid.

So yeah if someone in the party went "lets try fielding an LGBTQ activist" i think it's an important step forward. Shame the balloon popped though.

What happens is a missed opportunity for this nation and its government to rise above the zealots and permanently stop hate speech and baseless accusations against us. It's decided to stand by the fundamentalist haters.  This episode should serve as a lesson and an eye-opener for the LGBT community, for many years to come.
