Michelle Chong’s directorial debut 《一泡而红》 has scored numerous sold-out sessions and collected an impressive S$170,000 when it sneaked during the weekend (24 – 27 November) with only 15 prints. Movie-goers are buying tickets up to 3 days in advance to watch Already Famous and cinemas have increased print count (from 15 to 24 prints) and sessions for the movie’s official opening on 1st December.

It took a weekend to crush that phoney $90k best actress, who should by the way be executed and stoned.

This movie is great though I agree with the reviewer that it has pacing issues, could have been 'tighter'.

Anyway one thing puzzles me - how come Michelle Chong got Cynthia Koh to play as the showbiz Ah Jie? If the showbiz Ah Jie was played by Zoe Tay, the effect would have been better and more convincing.

I like the theme song "bu fang qi wo yong yuan bu fang qi" that catchy tune sticks in my head. Watched it with a friend and it did made me shed 1 tear drop towards the end when Alien Huang told Michelle Chong that no matter she succeeds or not in becoming famous, she's already famous in his heart... "there will be no NG and I will not shout "cut"...for you will always be my leading star"

Cynthia Koh is not the weirdest casting choice. The weirdest casting choice must be the lead actress herself.

Michelle's not young compared to Alien Huang, plus her performance as Ah Kiao is a little uneven and diffident.

庄米雪自编、自导、自演的电影处女作《一泡而红》预映票房告捷，但剧中一口“联邦腔”却惹怒了不少马来西亚人，连日在网上炮轰庄米雪以嘲笑他人来赚钱。

《一泡而红》讲述来自马国永平的阿娇（庄米雪饰），为实现明星梦来到新加坡，但却连连遭遇挫折，寻梦之旅也被咖啡店助理阿盛（“小鬼”黄鸿升饰）打乱，引发了一系列有笑有泪的故事。

庄米雪在剧中模拟滑稽好笑的“联邦腔”，制造了很多笑料，但却因此引发一些永平网友的不满。

网友Adesye质疑说：“她到底有没有去研究？永平人讲话的腔有这样么？不要每次都以为马国人讲的华语，就是这样子的。”

网友lantianshui指出，不单是永平，就算是北马、中马和东马，讲华语也不是这样的，基本上马国人并没有想象中的联邦腔。庄米雪片中的腔调，是刻意模仿联邦腔不果，反而制造出怪异的效果。

一些网友也觉得，片子把马国拍得太“农村”。网友SohRenJie说：“这部片子是不错，可是永平没那么乡下好不好？别把马来西亚每次拍成乡下地方。”

多场爆满，票房告捷；庄米雪表歉意：没意图嘲笑马国人。

Michelle Chong definitely has visited Blowing Wind.

Otherwise why would she know that there are so many bitchy AJs (like those 2 DHC promoters in the movie), bitching about Zoe Tay's auntie-ness?

Not just the 2 DHC promoters... most audiences are criticising Zoe's auntieness.

Remember during the Ultimatum? People were glued to their HD TV sets counting the number of crow's feet Zoe had.

Watched this film, Nasi Lemak 2.0, at AMK Hub.

It's very well-shot and well-paced. It may be beng and cheesy but at least it's not corny, and the production values were actually rather sophisticated. It totally didn't feel 'rookie' at all.

Highly recommended. This film has a stronger Malaysian/Singapore soul than the recent crop of local films. Even Jack Neo can't beat this.

Wonder when we will have a production like this.

SERIOUSLY!? I think the only great malaysian movie is ice kacang puppy love. Others were pathetic; I mean for the chinese movie, not sure how abt the malay movie.

NASI LEMAK 2.0 is not even a Malay movie. Over 60 % of the dialogue is in Mandarin, resulting it being rejected from receiving any government funding. The rest of the dialogue are in Malay, English, Manglish, Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, Teochew, Hainanese and a smattering of Japanese. And that has not hampered the film from amassing RM 7 million box office, surpassing ICE KACANG PUPPY LOVE. Even if u look back at the late Yasmin Ahmad's seemingly Malay films, their dialogues contain a myriad of languages and dialects spoken in Malaysia as well.

Hahaha.... u're not wrong.... but u're not entirely correct either.

While Namewee's 2007 controversy had a bit to do with the situation, the tax rebate was also mainly due to Nasi Lemak 2.0's classification as a 'foreign movie'.

The same case happened to Ice Kacang Puppy Love before even though both movies were shot in Malaysia and by Malaysians.

All these had to do with an absurd policy the Arts Ministry had back then when it came to film production.

The policy required a film to contain at least 60% of the dialogue in Bahasa Malaysia for it to be classified as a 'local film' to be given the 20% tax rebate.

Any film that did not meet the requirement, regardless whether the languages are used locally or not or whether the story background, actors and production crew are Malaysians or not, will be treated as 'foreign' films, thus not spared from the 20% tax.

A-Niu, director of Ice Kacang Puppy Love, sought out the matter with then Deputy Arts Minister, Senator Heng Seai Kie, but due to a Cabinet reshuffle, she was transferred to the Women Development Ministry. It was supposedly reported in the news that the outdated policy had been withdrawn but now the same thing happened with Nasi Lemak 2.0.

I'm talking about upfront governmental funding here.

Najib supposedly promised to set aside a certain amount of funds for those in the creative arts who produced works aligned with the 1Malaysia concept.

But throughout Namewee's efforts to seek government funding for his movie, it was rejected on both grounds of did not meet the language requirement and indirectly, his 2007 national anthem-modified video controversy.

In the more recent Malaysian Film Festival, Nasi Lemak 2.0 contested in only the Best Non-Malay Film category, due to its 'foreign film' status. It had to compete with not just non-Malay locally-made films but also non-Malay foreign films, which is obviously an unfair competition ground. Luckily, another local movie, released in conjunction with CNY early this year, Great Day 天天好天bagged that award.

你好，我是这部戏的导演庄米雪。因为口音演绎的处理造成大家对这­部电影的误解是我始料不及的。可能也是预告片的剪法让大家产生误­会而感到不满。 如果这个预告片冒犯了你们，我在这里向大家道歉。

其实我对有些马来西亚同胞的意见也感到惊讶，因为这部片根本没有­嘲笑马来西亚人的意图，反而是赞扬他们不屈不饶的精神。 如果你有机会看这部电影的话，你会发现其实电影有稍微批评的并不­是马来西亚人。

当初我写这个剧本的时候，就是要描述一个来到新加坡追寻梦想，尽­管备受打压， 还是继续努力不放弃的马来西亚女生，因为这种意志力和斗志是我在­许多马来西亚朋友看到的特质。

而且我也有在受访的时候透露，戏里的许多情节都是我在演艺圈本身­的经历，所以如果我真的是在嘲笑阿娇，那我不是也在嘲笑自己？

It is not like Singapore, which is over 400 times smaller than Malaysia, and even different regions of Malaysia have different accents. Coming from Johor myself, I can attest to the fact that Johoreans do not speak with such accent. In fact, thanks to the availability of Singapore TV signal in Johor, many Chinese Johoreans can speak almost like Singaporeans. I even received a comment from a local before that I do not sound Malaysian. But heck, that is not my priority concern when watching this movie. I’m more to wanting to get the humour out of the story plus Michelle’s imitating talent. ;)

SINGAPORE: Singapore actress-director Michelle Chong's directorial debut "Already Famous" clawed in a healthy S$415,000 in its opening weekend, ahead of the animated film "Arthur Christmas" (S$178,000) and the period blockbuster "White Vengeance" (S$55,000), both of which opened in Singapore on the same weekend.

"Already Famous" also compared favorably against major Hollywood releases "Puss In Boots" which raked in S$586,000 in its first weekend and "The Twilight Sage: Breaking Dawn Part 1", which took in S$553,000 during its opening weekend.

"I feel very touched and grateful that we are so close in box office with the two established Hollywood franchises in our opening week, despite having fewer than half their number of cinema halls.

"I thank the local audience for their support, and I hope we can continue to have good results," said Chong, who not only directed "Already Famous" but also wrote, produced and starred in the film, in a press statement.

"Already Famous" has grossed S$702,000 as of last week.

The film, which also stars Taiwan actor Alien Huang, tells the story of Ah Kiao, a Malaysian girl who heads to Singapore to chase her dreams of stardom.

Observation: Southern Johorean (JB) and Northern Johorean (Muar especially) speak different accent, and I think Yong Peng people speak similar to Muar... It depends on your family also... The dialect you speak and the people you interact with...

good eyesight. he is not singaporean. he is canadian born and is imported to act in a few mediacorp tv dramas. he is now based in HK

I watched the show recently and thought it was better then I expected. No doubt Singapore films are well know for being cheesy and the slapstick humor but this show had a softer side - aspiration and social support. There were many good actors in the show as well and notably the biggest cast so far for any Singaporean film (if I'm not wrong). I do think it's worth a watch. =)
