Well, one man's meat is another's poison. We both are looking at different lenses: you are looking as a movie-goer, whereas I am looking as a musical-goer. :)

Please start a new thread to comment on the musical as the thread title named: Movie Review: Les Miserbales (full stop)

Why BW are filled with rubbish and nonsense threads while separate movie/TV threads discussions are being merge to become one big mess movie thread. When they do that posts become unreadable and doesn't make any sense. People also dont bother to click to read. Is this entertainment category not worthy to be discuss at all. It should deserves a category on its own.

Agree with imchaser. How can all sorts of different movies from Les Miserables to Fann Wong's 暴走吧女人 be discussed in the same thread?

All the movies threads that was created from the past were being worthlessly lumped into a big giant thread.

Dont some people here including the mods create new separate threads everyday on any news or youtube videos that they find it interesting? THose generates lesser replies sometimes zero than any of those movies thread.

The movies discussions are so worthless now. Whoever decides to do this are so killing the movie industries in BW.

Whoever lumped all the different movie discussions into one undifferentiated thread is defeating the purpose of the discussion, why would others discuss specific movies if it's going to be eventually lumped together in one massive and indecipherable thread? It just doesn't make sense!

As a fan of movies, I really hope there'll be a new section dedicated for entertainment where movies (or books, animations, or theatre performance, or even TV DRAMAS!) can have separated threads. Maybe it can be under Interest group?

Though I understand that such threads may just sink to the bottom of the forum after a few months, but if it's not too troublesome to implement, why not give it a try? However it will be a hassle to have yet another section to moderate, especially I think that an entertainment section is very prone to having repetitions. For movies from certain region maybe it can be combined (e.g Jap/korean/thai)

If it didn't work very well then you can always merge them back into this same thread again? ;-;

Even video games have their separate threads on IT rest room D:

OK ENOUGH BLABBERING AND before I get out of topic, here is a compilation of thai movies done by the same company. I suppose it is an anniversary celebration or something :)I recommend wathcing from 2:00 onwards because only the films after that have been released in Singapore

It’s with a very heavy heart when I am typing this review, you see, Superman is the most iconic superhero and I really wanted to like this movie, especially when this MOS will signal the go ahead for the Justice League project.

Let’s start with the good part, the casting, the production values, the acting were all top notched. Those who complained the previous Superman Return lacked punches will get fulfilled literally. In fact the whole of second half of the movie was filled with CGI fighting, reminded me of the fight scenes Neo vs Mr Smith in the Matrix 3. Director Zack Snyder had once again proven himself to be great at directing CGI heavy scenes while Henry Cavil showcased that he is the face for the next Superman, a modernised Superman who is more bulky.

Kevin Costner and Diana Lane gave briefs yet memorable performances as Superman’s adopted parents while Russell Crowe had quite a meaty role as Superman’s biological father. They expanded Jor-el role to have Russell Crowe portrayed as a fighter, likely to justify Russell’s big pay check.

Granted, Superman is never an easy story to be written, he is almost an immortal with god like powers among us. The silver ages of comic treated the whole theme with a certain comedic touch, which even translated to the first 4 movies starring Christopher Reeves. At a good writer’s hand, the theme of why a god chose to live among us and spent all his time protecting, instead of ruling over, us, will be explored. That’s a good reason why I was excited over this when I heard of Christopher Nolan, of the new Batman trilogy, had taken the producer’s role. Indeed as compared to previous movies, MOS has a serious tone, probably over serious. The weight felt heavy as Superman’s origin was retold yet again.

Now here comes what’s bad about MOS, the entire plot felt extremely silly with loopholes and crazy events unfolding at such a pace that you wondered what’s the writer thinking of. Plus the sets designers seemed to have a perversion in mind, that’s why the phantom zone pods and Superman’s shuttle looked like giant penis flying all over the space. Someone should design a condom with the Superman crest right at the tip, seriously that looked like the space ship.

Half way through the movie, I would have thought MOS was directed by J.J. Abrams (Star Trek director) with all that lens flare. Why would Zack Snyder use a trick that’s associated as another director’s signature style?

For all the craps this movie thrown, I would rather they stick to the red underwear, at least there is something to look at. And save the 3D money, the 3D post production effects were mediocre. No need to stay after the credits, there was nothing on the coming movie, I guessed the producers were not even sure there will be a sequel.

Verdict 3 stars out of 5; and the 3 stars were for the production and CGI effects.

The above reviews were spoiler free, so if you have not watched MOS, I would suggest to skip the below for it will be heavy with spoiler.

You have been warned.

Now where do I start of the plot’s crappiness? Let’s start with the beginning, if you have a dying exploding planet, why would you need to send the rebels to the Phantom Zone? Keeping them lock up in the cell would have guaranteed a punishment. So are you punishing or saving the rebels? And if there was a means to get into the Phantom Zone, why doesn’t everyone in the planet get into that zone? What the hell you have to lose against an exploding planet? Not only you spared the rebels of a certain timely death, you gave them a fucking ship that they could fly off? That’s crap!

Breed as a scientist, Jor-El, could outmatch General Zod who was breed as a soldier.

I liked the part when Superman asked his father why didn’t the parents followed him to Earth, though the answer was one of the stupidest ever, if Jor-El felt that he was the relic of the old system, why would he bother to have Superman born in such a manner? That’s a lame excuse.

One of the loopholes of the plot had to do with timeline, the spaceship found in the Artic were thousands of years ago, that was their planetary exploration plan before the Krytonians founded the way of harvesting babies artificially, and Jor-El explained that that’s why the planetary exploration plan was abandon and led to those people in the outposts died. Now how did that Artic space ship contained the technological means of harvesting babies? Hello Hollywood, some audiences remembered the plot.

And so FBI knew Lois Lane knew the identity of Superman, they did absolutely nothing to extract the info from her? The military would rather spend millions deploying unmanned aircraft rather than drilling the info from Lois Lane? Since when FBI became such a pussy? Speaking of identity, putting on glasses will hide your secret identity in a room full of reporters? “Nar! Clark Kent cannot be Superman, see Clark wears glasses and not skin tight costumes.”???

There was one scene which the movie wanted us to see the ultimate sacrifice of Papa Kent so as to teach Superman a lesson. Papa Kent sacrificed himself to save his family dog. I knew Americans really like their pets but this was ridiculous! Tell me again what kind of lesson a son would learn to see his father died in front of him? Papa Kent was not afraid of the emotional scar on Superman for failing to save his father while he had the means? What’s wrong with getting Superman walked into the tornado? The wind would have hide everything and Superman just need to show up few miles away, or even go home straight from there and no one would notice!

The first phase from the transmission of General Zod was “You Are Not Alone!” in different language. WHAT? Did someone ask them that question or this was the intergalactic way of greetings? Not only that was cheesy, it failed to serve any purpose.

Part 2 of Krytonians being creepy, their entire DNA were encoded on half a skull face? What with that level of weirdness? And Jor-El, there got to be a better way for baby Superman to bring the DNA out, how are you expecting him to extract from his DNA cell? What’s with even giving him the DNA? Jor-El would definitely know that for Krytonians to live on Earth they either had to change the world atmosphere or breed a race of gods, both would have led to breakdown of Earth. So what’s your logic of getting Superman to bring the DNA over? At least the older version, it was simply an escape pod for baby Superman, nothing more.

Once again, Hollywood had insulted the law of physic again, a wormhole will not selectively pull in targets, it will suck in EVERYTHING, that’s why it’s called Blackhole. Realistically the whole of Metropolis, maybe the whole Earth would have suck inside.

Explained to me, why the rebels asked for Lois Lane to be taken to their ship? Not to mention she was conveniently locked in a room with access to entire ship system and yes she had just been given the key. Talked about probability. For an Earth woman, she was great with Krytonian weaponry as she took down a few rebels soldiers while escaping. Why need Superman, when she could have wipe out the entire crew in no time?

Does heat ray vision has a use limit? Why didn’t Superman fire his heat vision on the World Maker machine from a distance? That would have saved everyone the time and trouble.

Here comes the BIGGEST SIN of MOS. Superman kills! In all superheroes stories, the number 1 rule is Superheroes don’t kill, regardless how evil the villain is. That’s an unbreakable code of conduct that separates superheroes from mere vigilantes. That’s why Batman never killed the Joker ever though Joker had killed the second Robin and tons of peoples. That’s why Lex Luthor survived all these years without Superman firing a heat vision into Lex’s heart. (Looked back at all the Superheroes movie, from DC to Marvel, has any hero killed his/ her enemy on purpose?) That’s what made superheroes special as they had the power and yet choose not to use it. By letting Superman killed just because of 4 persons, this movie had literally destroyed what Superman has stands for. What’s next? As long as there are more than 4 persons killed or in danger, Superman can kill his opponent? That’s Bullshit!

Effects were good, but I think the storyline is stupid. The fights are too exaggerating! If Earth is to be destroyed to that extend, I think it's better to be taken over

I have a thing for Superman movies, and I sure wouldn't want to miss any. But I do agree with most of what oralb mentioned (the spaceship in Arctic and FBI on Lois, I also wondered, and the last paragraph indeed "shocking"), other than the great effects and all, it somewhat lack something, such as some light humours?

I also felt "heavy" after watching it, not the usual "happy" in the past, it was kind of "darker" than the past movies, however, one thing about the past movies were that most involved Lex Luthor (even with Superman Returns) - too much of Lex will be boring as there are other villains beside him (although he might be considered the ultimate enemy)...

Oh, they changed the theme song, why??? I still prefer the old one... :(

Happy - is what we should be, always.

Initially I thought the introduction of the concept was gd. However the show was too long.. The special effects became bland after awhile without balance of a gd plot. Wham whammm bam bamm throughout the later half. Was contemplating to slp or not...

Actually Superman in comics HAS killed before.... I have the comics to prove it and you can google it too. I don't like but this plot line has been inked and if you do recall a series of stories that was why he left earth after which. Maybe this is before your time but it has happened. Other parts I can understand as I am a hardcore fan for more then 30 yrs and watched all his movies if not bought a lot of the Superman comics. But then again... this is a REBOOT of the franchise and taken into a totally different direction to explore another :"what if" scenarios and I take that as such but remember the true original Superman story of the comic world. ( I hate the fact that Jimmy Olsen is now a girl too) I bet you have never read ALTERNATIVE Superheroes series too. I totally detached myself from the comic I read from the one Hollywood make for the sake of dramatic effects. Oh ya, there were also bits I don't like about those other Superman movies too. But that did not stop me from buying the comics still.

With chris nolan being part of this movie, no doubt it'll be a darker movie just like "The Dark Knight"

To me, the thing which is unbelievable is that there was even no evacuation of the people of Metropolis. Everyone was waiting inside their buildings, if it was 9/11 like what happened to the Twin Towers, everyone should be rushing out , hurriedly or even jumping from their windows..

Second, to make it more believable, there shouldn't be any electricity or power when the whole Metropolisis was getting destroyed by the World Engine or whatever.

Third, since I was a kid I thought Lois Lane doesn't know the identity of Clark Kent until the day he stepped-in at the Daily Planet. However on the last scene, when Clark was introduced to Lois as the newbie in Daily Planet the smile showed that they already knew each other. Plus they already kissed even before Clark/Superman was working at Daily Planet which is different from the Superman Returns or the Superman of Christopher Reeves ages ago.

Diane Lane and Kevin Costner saves the day, good acting. Plus Diane Lane looks to young to be the mother of Clark.

I think this is basically what happened to the previous Incredible Hulk when Ang Lee became the director. It became a drama cum action movie.

There was also too many shameless product placements in this movie e.g. Nikon, Sears, Nokia, 7-11, etc.

I'm really turned-on if both heads (the head above and the head below) are both functioning well

this was what bugged me about the movie. it looked like a Christopher Nolan movie with the grey hues and dark saturation of the picture (not to mention a huge load of CGI), but it lacked the plot and character development that we had seen in his other movies. not saying that we should be comparing this movie to his other works, but why did he leave out the substance and tried to make it up with CGI? granted he is only the producer of the show and the director is Zack Snyder (a lot of people seem to be forgetting this. so in the end it just looked like Snyder used Nolan's production methods without following up with the content, which irked me.

another thing that I sort of cringed at was the amount of product placement in the movie. Nikon, 7-Eleven, IHOP, Motel 8. it got to a point where it started to look funny.

and the switching of scenes between present and past confused me a little bit because i could never tell which one was showing at one point until i saw Clark Kent as either an adult or a child. there was so distinction between the two scenes.

and it amazes me that Clark Kent had "so many questions" about his past but he didn't really ask much, and suddenly just donned the outfit and took on the role of the hero just like that. it felt a little rushed despite the film having 2hrs and 40 mins to do everything. instead, we had the draggy super long scene between Superman and that lady and her minion that, in the end, only served to establish that the humans now suddenly realize that Superman was not the enemy. i don't think the director was allocating the duration of the movie to the right scenes.

there were many absurd points. i really just have to add these:

1. With super hearing, why the hell didn't Supes notice Lois when she was following behind him into the ice cave early in the movie?

2. what's with Lois's nose? It's ugly.

3. If the man of steel couldn't be damaged by anything on earth, how the hell did he manage to shave and get his haircut?

4. How in the world did they manage to fight from one city, out into space, across the earth, and appear back RIGHT AT THE PLACE WHERE THEY STARTED FIGHTING?!

5. Lois was in Kansas, no? How did they manage to fly to Manhattan in what seemed like minutes when the World Machine would have probably destroyed half of earth!?

6. The fight scene towards the end was just a remake of Matrix 3. OLD AND OUTDATED! Matrix 3 did the scenes much more beautifully and it's not even in 3D.

7. There were too much physics jargon for us common people to understand what and how the World Machines work. In the end, for me, it's just like, "oh ok, so the earth is being destroyed"...

Interesting points to note though:

1. The oil tanks that Supes crashed into and fell through had the logo Lex Corp. No prizes for getting it right.

2. When Zod punched Supes atop a building, I remember seeing "160 days without incidents" and just when Supes crashed it, the 1 and 6 dropped off and only the 0 was left up there. Pretty witty, and there were a few more other scenes like these with subliminal messages.

ok my head hurts. I still prefer the Superman that Reeves acted in. Part 1 and 2 were both great, and the music by John Williams is unforgettable. I can't remember the orchestration for Man of Steel, really.

Sad la. Some how I prefer the last instalment to this one. At least the part where Brandon Routh's Supes was saving the crashing plane was exciting. The welcome and standing ovation at the stadium fit what everyone was waiting for. Too bad Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey had too much gay going on's that drove the movie away from its intended reboot path. Yes, though the movie isn't exactly great, but I preferred that to Man of Steel.

Oh well. Not gonna catch it a second time.

I think early reviews were good and everyone else started to follow and say that it was good.

I thot it was just ok. The first half was pretty creepy at times, but the exorcism scene has been overdone to death.

If you liked Insidious, you should like this one.

Go see it yourself.

It's hard to talk about horror movies without spoiling the fun for those who have not watched it, so can't reveal too much.

Would like to hear what others thought about it tho.

Yes u r right in a way. But the director and actors made a huge difference here.

The director did a pretty good job in using old school sound editing, creepy shadows and tense builds. The fine acting naturally helps particulary Vera Farmiga and Lili Taylor.

Anyway, best to watch it and judge yourself.

Everyone's threshold for fear is also different - there were some girls who jumped out of the seats while others were just laughing it off at the cinema.

Enjoy ^_^

Watched it. What made this such a brilliant horror film is the story telling & excellent acting from the cast. It's not juz a film made to scare. The director gave the characters a lot of soul, so audiences r endeared to them, hence feeling their anguish thru the ordeal. FYI, the director is Malaysian & he's the one who created Saw.

Actually i m curious to know wat makes it creepily diff fr other exorcism movie

Arent they all similar?

It's not an exorcism movie, nor is it about haunted houses.

Its quite good especially the solid acting and the 70s setting. But suggest that you watch it at off-peak hours and at less crowded cinemas - I made the mistake of watching it at cineleisure during peak hour and there were lots of of annoying kids making funny noises that ruined the suspense and ambience. Enjoy!

There is no excessive computer graphics and effects. Everything is revolving around the house in a creepy island surrounded by the woods. What makes it interesting is like what Ed Warren had said, "demon don't possess things, but possesses people. They are demonic and don't walk the earth in human form."

What scares me are those scenes which shows demonic presence in the most natural way, you wouldn't have the feel that it's unreal.

Lastly, demons bang the door in 3 claps, an insult to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Next time don't knock the doors in 3s yeah? Hahas..

insidious (from the same director) is nothing, this is fucking good.......if insidious is 5.5/10, Conjuring can come up to 9.5/10

The director is a 26yo msian -> doing us asian proud, hence u can see "Styles" of asian horror flick rather than hollywood style..

The "ending" is typical, though......
