Watched two movies in BKK last week. One was Harry Potter which I quite enjoyed. I love the dark overtones and all and felt that Harry Potter looks quite moody throughout the film simply because he's not getting enought sex. :D But seriously, the kissing scene is really disappointing to say the least- that Chinese girl Katie Leung isnt really that pretty to start with. A better match would be Luna Lovegood who is played by Evanna Lynch. The fight scenes aint really that imaginative- the Demenetes sucking the lives out of the two boys at the start has a similiar treatment in the very first Xmen, and those mask-donning bad guys at the Ministry of Magic look frighteningly like Darth Vader's cousins and it's not helped by the wizard fight scenes (like something out of Star Wars) with wands replacing the light sabers. Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge steals all her scenes even from veterans like Maggie Smith and Emma Thompson.

The other movie I watched with delight is the low-brow Thai gay gangster flick called Kungfu Tootsie. The director steal all the ideas from HK's Enter The Phoneix and mix and match it with a lot of copy-cat Stephen Chow earlier silly movies. It's so bad it's almost good. Laugh my head off at lots of gay and fart/vomit in your face jokes. You should watch it- but wait until it comes out in DVD. :D

andy, on this movie, i wasnt having high expectation before watching it.

verdict, not that bad, ending a little anti-climax.

other than optimus prime, the rest of the transformer had been mutilated beyond recognition. :(

I am thinking about watching Royston Tan's first commercial effort- 881 - 'a tale of a pair of getai-loving sisters' rise to fame'. Ong Sor Fern of ST gave it 3 stars and critiqued that 'this film is a chance for Royston to prove his mainstream mettle. The pressures are evident in the movie which, despite its glossy production values and snappy pacing, betrays a schizophrenic sensibility. '

I've seen Cut Sleeve and I totally hated it. The characters overly stereotypical, plot predictable. Steven Lim's tattoo, and only that, was prolly the best thing to look out for. The director's earlier work, Yellow River, was way easier to swallow; it was a short film.

Poltergay -that campy French gay-themed film got a 2half stars from ST reviewer today:

'You have to hand it to the French, ultimate farce makers, for coming up with an outing like this. There is, in this Gallic gayness, a premise which could have, no pun intended, knocked your shorts off. But the more this campy escapades goes, the more you see its potential escaping. It is just too flat and harmless with little rise out of the set-up. "Heterosexuality is a bourgeois scam," goes the rallying cry. Before this joke of homosexuality cooked up in the home limps to a mere trot.' - Tay Yek Keak, ST.

On the other hand, The Bourne Ultimatum got a 5 stars rating from Ong Sor Fern. Hmm...

I also happened to watch Hotel Rwanda the other night. Don Cheadle is great. So is that lovely actress who played his wife, Sophie Okonedo. What a marvellous performances from both of them.

Also managed to catch another South Korean rather bloated but touching classic-Brothehood. My god, Won Bin is really good in this film- so boyishly handsome somemore. BUT I have my eyes only on Jang Dong-Kun. I think I a little in love with him. He is so much more believable here than in his later blockbuster- Typhoon.

If the show hit the box by the billions, more actors will join in the stripping. I think starting from Jet Li....hehehe...

Hong Kong movies have been in the gloom for years, hope this new stunt will give it a new lease of life.

Taiwanese director Ang Lee's sexually explicit spy thriller "Lust, Caution" was the surprise winner of the top award at the Venice film festival on Saturday, just two years after he won with "Brokeback Mountain."

The movie is a World War Two thriller set in Shanghai featuring long and sometimes violent sex scenes which Lee has hinted were real.

The verdict means Asian directors have won the Golden Lion on the Lido waterfront for the last three years.

The Silver Lion for best director went to U.S. film maker Brian De Palma, whose "Redacted" shocked audiences with its brutal reconstruction of the real-life rape and murder of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl by U.S. soldiers in 2006.

Taiwan-born Lee told the glitzy red carpet prize ceremony that "Lust, Caution" took him to "some very difficult places.

"I have invited you to come along with me and in the end to stay down there with me ... You are the seven samurais, I needed your help," he added, addressing the seven-member jury.

The film is Lee's return to the theme of forbidden love after gay cowboy hit "Brokeback," but this time the setting is the teeming streets of 1940s Shanghai.

The film centers on a group of revolutionary students bent on killing a powerful political figure who collaborates with occupying forces during the Sino-Japanese war.

First-time actress Tang Wei portrays the young woman who agrees to ensnare the sinister figure, played by one of Asia's biggest screen stars, Tony Leung.

The sometimes violent sex scenes between them were a major talking point in Venice, and Lee hinted to reporters that they were real.

A new brainless comedy, this one not so gay-friendly (though its central plot revolves around a same-sex marriage scam), with Adam Sandler and Kevin James called I Now Pronouced You Chunk and Larry is now showing in town. It received an unfavourable review from Today who condemned it as 'a whirlwind tour of politically-incorrect caricatures, such as Rob Schneider hamming it up as a myopic Asian wedding coordiantor. Other caricatures include gay people being depicted as effeminate, sex-straved and/or strident.' 2 stars

Btw, looking at the biography of my now favourite Japanese actor, Shido Nakamura, it seems he is quite a prolific actor having acted in Letters from Iwo Jima, providing the voice for Death Note 1 & 2, and also involves in the latest John Woo movie in production- Red Cliff. Andy, has you seen Be With You? And what are some of your favourite Japanese film to recommended for a clueless BW member like me? :D

There is an apparent lack in interest here in Japanese films, sadly. The ones that I have seen and liked are:

Kurosawa's Kagemusha (really spectacular use of colour. vivid drama of Shakespearean propotion)

Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away (I have never seen animation done with such whimsical charm and awsome imagination. I think less of his later work, Moving Castle)

Twlight Samurai (really love the restraint in this study of human drama)

Waterboy

Takeshi Kitano's Zatoichi

Well, that's about it. :D

Andy, please promise me you will borrow a copy of Be With You and watch it with your bf. It's really a moive about the re-affirmation of love.

Man! This was my first time watching incest scene in movie. I must say it's a little disturbing, but the acting was superb :thumb: I would recommend Savage Grace .

Warning: About 4 people left the cinema right before the incest scene and anther 5 left in the middle of it...

Anyone planning to watch Balls of Fury?? Sounds like a fun movie in the vein of Dodgeball which I enjoyed very much. Balls of Fury is about 'A washed-up ping-pong champion must reclaim his skills after being recruited by the government to go undercover and bust a crime lord, who hosts an annual ping-pong tournament.'
