Man extorted $197,000 in cash and $51,900 worth of valuables from teacher

SINGAPORE - A 35-year-old man, who had a sexual relationship with a male teacher, extorted $197,000 in cash and about $52,000 in valuables from him in exchange for his silence, a district court heard on Tuesday (Jan 12).

Vincent Ng Hian Gee, who is in sales, admitted to one of eight extortion charges.

He intentionally put the 45-year-old teacher in fear of harm to his reputation on Sept 20, 2013, by threatening via text messages to expose their trysts to the Ministry of Education and his school, and dishonestly induced him to deliver $70,000 and a Chanel bag worth $3,900.

The teacher cannot be named because of a gag order.

Seven other similar charges, which involve property such as a Rolex watch and three Chanel handbags, will be taken into consideration when Ng is sentenced on Feb 15.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Wuan said some time in late August 2013, the teacher met Ng through an online Web portal.

The teacher invited Ng to his house some time in early September that year. There, the two engaged in homosexual acts.

Later, Ng found out the teacher's occupation through the Internet. He then started sending text messages to harass the teacher. Ng demanded that the teacher give him large sums of money to "compensate'' him, and threatened that he would otherwise report their homosexual relationship to the ministry and his school.

Fearing for his reputation and worried that he would lose his job, the teacher gave in to Ng's demands.

On Sept 20 that year, Ng sent text messages to the teacher again to meet up. The teacher tried to ignore the messages but Ng was persistent and threatened to go to the victim's workplace and report the matter to the MOE.

Ng also warned him against making a police report. As the teacher feared for his reputation and career, he agreed to meet Ng, who asked for $65,000 and a "gift for his mother''.

The two went to Tampines Central DBS Telepark where the teacher withdrew $60,000 and handed it to Ng. They then went to the Chanel outlet at Marina Bay Sands where Ng chose a bag worth $3,900. The teacher paid for it.

He also transferred two sums of $5,000 over two days to Ng's bank account.

Ng admitted during investigation to having gambled away the money at a casino. To date, he has paid back $24,000, and returned the Rolex watch, gold chain and gold pendant.

His lawyer James Ow Yong asked District Judge John Ng to defer sentence until after the Chinese New Year as his client wishes to spend time with his critically ill mother.

The maximum punishment is seven years' jail and caning.

A deeper issue to ponder is why the teacher is afraid of being outed? This kind of extortion will not work in a more open, tolerant society. The government,  at the minimum, should decriminalize consensual  same sex behavior.  This would remove the fear of losing job, etc.

Sadly, the deeper issue is general intolerance towards sexual minorities, and unfortunately it goes beyond the criminalization of consensual homosexual intercourse. I think a significant proportion of Singaporeans are deeply conservative and genuinely seem to believe that a gay teacher poses a real threat to impressionable young students – a version of the hysterical idea that people can be ‘turned’ gay under the influence of a gay person, or that a gay teacher will influence students to lead depraved and immoral lives.

Although I do know gay teachers in MOE, I think they (and male teachers more generally) are justifiably cautious about their reputations – once tarnished it's very difficult to fix.

Guest Protection

How to protect yourself

It’s important to understand that its a nasty world out there and draw up and adopt some rules of behaviour to protect yourself from this menace.

Let people earn their access. Strangers do not have any right to enter your home or your life. Get to know new people well and decide how trustworthy they are before you let them into your home or life. Take particular care when using online dating services and Apps. Never invite them into your home on the first date.

Discuss. Talk with your friends about the problems of blackmail and how you can defend yourselves against the risk.

Network. Have a small network of trusted friends – who do not have to be gay – who can support you in emergencies.

Be honest and open. If you have pride and confidence in yourself it is very hard for a blackmailer to find leverage in order to blackmail you.

Validate. If you do sensitive work get advice and guidance on how you and your work can be protected.

Be wary of the internet. Do not believe personal profiles on web sites. It could be anyone (or even a gang).

Do not reply to any email or message from someone you do not know.

Do not pay any money to anyone.

If you are threatened go straight to the Police.

See a solicitor who has relevant experience in this subject.

1) They are both gay. Life is hard enough as it is. Why did they have to do these horrible things to each other?

2) Would the teacher really have lost his job for being outed? This wasn't a student he'd been with, but a 35 year old man. Was his fear of "reputational damage" justified?

3) It's ironic that the person being publicly named and shamed is the extortionist. With a huge photograph displayed on ST. While the teacher is protected by a court imposed gag order.

No hope for humanity, but there is justice.

The teacher did the right thing by making a police report. The only way to teach the extortionist a lesson. Extortion is a serious offence and we should not give in to such threats.

Someone please tell me what the flying fuck this guy is talking about.

He was saying why the teacher paid the extortion money and then made a police report. Well, he did not realise that the punishment is still the SAME for extortion cases, whether he gets the money or not.

I was talking about the listed questions 1, 2, and 3.

1. Isn't the victim-culprit relationship already established? Where did "Why did they have to do these horrible things to each other" come from?

2. Why would anyone not? Why do you guys think we're so hard up about protecting all of your identities on this very forum itself.

3. Where is the iron? Do tell.

Being caught in blackmailing sucks eh... Sounds pretty much like modern slavery... Anyway, good riddance to the fat fuck and a strong warning to the gay community. Don't ever try blackmailing, it comes back to bite you.

In the same newspaper today, a man who blackmailed and extorted money from a male teacher  in exchange for his silence about their sexual encounter was sentenced to 3 yrs 4 months jail and 3 strokes of the cane while this PRC male teacher was just jailed 21 months for sexually assaulting a 12 yrs old girl. So boys, what can we learn from this -  that blackmailing and extorting for money is a far worse crime than the sexual assault of a child in the eyes of the law here?

Sex encounter: Man gets jail, caning for extortion

He got cash and valuables from male teacher by threatening to expose their sexual tryst

Amir Hussain
FEB 16, 2016, 5:00 AM SGT

A married man who extorted $197,000 in cash and $52,000 in valuables from a male teacher by threatening to expose their sexual encounter was given jail of three years and four months, with three strokes of the cane yesterday.

Vincent Ng Hian Gee, 35, who used to work in sales but is now unemployed, had earlier admitted to a charge of extorting $70,000 and a Chanel bag worth $3,900 from the 45-year-old teacher in September 2013.

Ng, who had seven other counts of extortion taken into consideration during sentencing, had threatened to disclose their sexual encounter to the teacher's school and the Ministry of Education (MOE).

They came to know each other through a Web portal in August 2013. In September, the teacher, who cannot be named because of a gag order, invited Ng to his house, where they had sex.

Later, Ng found out the teacher's occupation and started sending text messages to harass him.

Ng demanded large sums of money and threatened to report their encounter to the ministry and the teacher's school.

Fearing for his reputation and that he would lose his job, the teacher gave in to Ng's demands. On Sept 20, Ng asked to meet the teacher and threatened again to go to his workplace and report the matter to MOE.

The teacher agreed to meet Ng, who asked for $65,000.

The two went to DBS Telepark in Tampines Central, where the teacher withdrew $60,000 and handed it to Ng. They then went to the Chanel outlet at Marina Bay Sands, where Ng chose a bag worth $3,900.

The teacher paid for it. He also transferred two sums of $5,000 over two days to Ng's bank account. The court heard that Ng gambled away the money at a casino.

He has since paid back $24,000 and returned a Rolex watch, gold chain and gold pendant.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Wuan had asked for at least four years' jail, with three to four strokes of the cane.

He noted that the teacher finally mustered the courage to lodge a police report in March 2014, when he was at his wit's end, and his entire life savings had been depleted.

In mitigation, Ng's lawyer, Mr James Ow Yong, told the court that Ng had quarrelled with his wife in September 2013 about the decision to have children.

She had teased him about having feminine traits, and he felt rejected and confused about his sexuality.

Ng went on the Internet to have conversations with gay men and got to know the teacher.

After meeting the teacher, however, Ng, who said he was looking for love and intimacy, felt rejected.

The teacher had told him to leave after their sexual encounter, and did not want to maintain their relationship. The teacher also did not return Ng's calls and messages.

Hurt and rejected, Ng wanted to "punish" the teacher, said the lawyer, who asked for a minimum sentence for his client.

The penalty for extortion is between two and seven years' jail, and mandatory caning.

Ng will start serving his sentence on Feb 29.

The govt should see the deeper issue of having S377A now. It is not about won't efforcing the penal code, people became victim to it as in this case of blackmail. MOE could exercise the discriminatory S377A and sack the teacher.  What defense is there for the teacher if proceeded to court?

5 months’ jail for man who siphoned more than S$80,000 from ex-boyfriend’s bank account

In total, Ong Teck Hock siphoned S$82,853 from his former lover’s bank account. He was found out after the victim reported unauthorised outgoing fund transfers from his bank account.

SINGAPORE: After their relationship spanning 17 years broke down, Ong Teck Hock siphoned more than S$80,000 from his former lover’s bank account in a “misguided” attempt to protect the man’s assets from a new partner who had been “spending excessively”, a court heard on Friday (Mar 11).

Ong, 41, was sentenced to five months’ jail after pleading guilty to seven counts for using the “future transfer” function in the victim’s Internet banking account to create multiple fund transfers into his own bank account. He did this over almost two years, from September 2012 to June 2014, without the victim’s knowledge.

The victim, 62, financially supported Ong throughout their 17-year relationship. When it soured in 2011, Ong moved out of the victim’s house but retained the man’s internet banking token. As the victim was “not well-versed” in using computers, he had allowed Ong to take care of much of the couple’s banking needs.

Angered that the victim spread rumours about him after their break up, Ong decided to continue transferring money from the victim’s account into his own, as he had done throughout their relationship, Deputy Public Prosecutor Christine Liu told the court.

In total, Ong siphoned S$82,853, spending the money on his daily expenses and trips overseas. He was found out after the victim reported unauthorised outgoing fund transfers from his bank account after a cheque had bounced because of a lack of funds.

DPP Liu cited the large sum involved and the “long period of time” over which Ong secretly emptied the victim’s bank account. The DPP also said Ong had abused the trust of the victim and misused sensitive information, such as the victim’s bank details, he had come to possess during the course of their relationship.

Ong’s lawyer Chu Hua Yi said his client had not siphoned the money out of greed, but was motivated by “a misguided sense of love and desire to protect (the victim) and what belonged (to the victim)”.

Mr Chu said Ong was hurt after the victim told others that Ong had been after his money. Ong then accessed the victim’s bank records and realised he had been “spending excessively” since getting together with a new partner.

This was when Ong began to transfer various amounts of money into his own bank account. To his mind, he was helping his former boyfriend “preserve his money”, Mr Chu said, but conceded that Ong had also used the money to meet his own financial needs.

Mr Chu pointed out that Ong has made substantial restitution to the victim, who tendered a letter to the court saying he hoped the court would “deal with (Ong) leniently”. Out of S$82,853, Ong has paid back all but S$9,853. He has an agreement with the victim to pay him S$800 a month until the sum is fully repaid, Mr Chu said.

Waiter jailed for touching man's buttocks in Orchard MRT station

SINGAPORE - A part-time waiter who repeatedly touched the buttocks of a 20-year-old man in the Orchard MRT station was jailed for 10 weeks on Monday (March 14).

Chew Yeow Keong, 36, pleaded guilty to one count of outraging the modesty of the victim at the fare gate of the station on Jan 21 last year.

Three other similar offences committed at the escalator and after the fare gates were considered during his sentencing.

The court heard that the victim was going to work and had alighted at Orchard MRT station that morning. He took the escalator from the train platform and then exited at the fare gate.

While he was tapping his ez-link card, he felt a touch at his buttock region. He turned around to check. He felt outraged and embarrassed by Chew's actions and confronted him.

The victim then sought the help of Transcom officers and police were called.

Closed-circuit television footage showed Chew following closely behind the victim with his right hand stretched forward towards the victim's buttocks. Chew was also seen directly behind the victim at the same fare gate.

Among his previous convictions was a similar molestation in 2002 when he was jailed and caned for using criminal force to outrage the modesty of a 17-year-old male.

Chew could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned or received any combined sentence.

It's not his hand, it's his heart. He must value a straight young man's butt so much to dare doing this in public. Otherwise, he could go to kb or cc and touch many butts. The only penalty there is death stare and disgust.

On the other hand, a jail sentence for touching the butt is a bit too much. If the victim takes the subway in Tokyo or Beijing, he could be touched by many guys unintentionally or intentionally.

It is interesting that the 20-yo victim, who is probably a cutie with a perky butt, decided to go through the trouble of reporting him to the control centre, waiting for the police to arrive and then undergoing the police investigation.  Most other guys will just stare at him or curse him and walk away.

Anyway, those who commented that the sentence is too harsh did not read " Among his previous convictions was a similar molestation in 2002 when he was jailed and caned for using criminal force to outrage the modesty of a 17-year-old male"?

Don't worry, maze so dark and so many hands. How to catch? Also, there is no CCTV installed.

the victim may have a perky butt but I beg to differ: he may be soft-looking/weak or niang type hence very vulnerable

For a victim like: http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/law-crime/article/1922444/hong-kong-waiter-charged-molesting-two-brothers-aged-7-and, who has not done NS like the prior victim of 17yo, that I can understand cos it is very vulnerable but not for a close-to-21-yo guy pls

in a messy station, the waiter could have been able to identify him due to his victim's outstanding hand gestures or swaying etc, and been closely tagging from behind..

A normal man will not enjoy another man/stranger closely tag behind him (even it is at a crowded MRT /place) - I rem when I was at schooling, the "boys" dislike games of men holding other schoolmates hands (when playing orientation games) - the waiter must have been tagging closely behind , at a normal situation, most normal men will just turn and give him "the look" or a punch

only a soft/weak-looking victim cannot handle such a situation in a public, (if he is being tied/pinned on bed that I can understand)so I don't agree that the victim is a cutie that some of u have been fantasizing

i really don't get how some people can trivialize the matter.  even if he gets canned the sh*t outta him i'd say he deserves it as a repeat offender.  molest is molest.  when a person's quest for immediate sexual gratification becomes the beginning of another person's life-long nightmare, it's just wrong.  counting on the victims to keep silent is just further proof of aggression.
