SINGAPORE - A construction worker molested an 11-year-old boy in an MRT train while the child's father was standing nearby.

 

For committing the offence, Faruk Abdulla Al, 27, who is from Bangladesh, was sentenced on Friday (March 8) to 15 weeks' jail.

 

District Judge Ng Cheng Thiam convicted him of a molestation charge last month after a two-day trial. 

 

In his submissions, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Lai said the incident took place while the boy and his father were on their way to visit the child's grandmother in Tampines on Dec 4, 2017.

 

The pair boarded an east-bound train at Boon Lay station and were standing in a cabin when Faruk came towards them after boarding at Jurong East station at around 12.30pm.

 

He then stood beside the boy, unaware that the child's father was standing nearby.

 

Faruk was a complete stranger to the boy and his father, the court heard.

The train was travelling towards Clementi station when Faruk initiated a conversation with the boy by tapping the child's left shoulder to get his attention.

 

The court heard that they started talking and Faruk placed his left hand on the boy's left shoulder.

 

They were travelling from Clementi to Redhill station when Faruk slid his hand down and molested the child, said the DPP.

 

His father saw Faruk committing the offence and confronted the construction worker by asking him: "Why did you touch my son?"

 

DPP Lai added that when Faruk heard this, he apologised to the man and even knelt down in the train to ask for forgiveness.

 

The father pulled Faruk out of the train when they reached Tiong Bahru station and took him to the control station.

 

The police were notified and officers soon came to arrest him.

 

During the trial, the boy testified that when Faruk first touched his shoulder, he thought the construction worker was just being "a little bit friendly".

 

However, the boy told Judge Ng that he started to feel afraid when Faruk slid his hand down to his waist.

 

DPP Lai said: "When asked why he did not stop the accused from doing what he did, the victim replied that he was too afraid to do it."

 

The DPP added that the "key plank" to the defence's case was that Faruk had only tapped the boy's shoulder and nothing else.

 

The construction worker, however, told the court during the trial that he had made no contact with the child's shoulder.

 

DPP Lai said: "It is submitted that the accused's about-turn as to whether he had touched the victim's shoulder is material and is a major inconsistency in his evidence.

 

"The accused can be seen clearly downplaying his culpability even during the trial itself."

 

For molesting the boy, Faruk could have been jailed for up to five years and fined or caned.

SINGAPORE: A 20-year-old man pleaded guilty on Monday (Mar 25) to molesting a 10-year-old boy at a student care centre where he was a volunteer. 

The man pleaded guilty to one charge under the Children and Young Persons Act, with another similar charge taken into consideration for sentencing.

The court heard that the man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the boy, started volunteering at the student care centre sometime in November 2016. As a volunteer, he was supposed to help students with their studies and play board games with them.

Sometime in 2017, the man met the victim at the centre and the two began chatting on Instagram. A close relationship developed, where the victim regarded the man as his sibling and even addressed him as “kor kor”, or elder brother in Cantonese.

According to court documents, the man admitted that sometime in 2018, he developed a “curiosity about young boys”.

One evening in July 2018, the man asked the victim to follow him to the toilet and into a cubicle. He then told the victim to remove his clothes and molested him.

The man also took off his own clothing and asked the victim to touch his private parts, but the victim refused to do so.

The victim felt scared but remained quiet throughout.

The boy later confided in his mother about what the man had done to him.

The victim’s mother told the student care centre’s executive director, who then reported it to the police after conducting an internal investigation.

For committing an indecent act with a child or young person, the man could be fined up to S$10,000, jailed up to five years, or both.

Nigerian national Okereke Ransom Okechukwu, 34, had met the two men, whose identities are protected by gag order, within four days of each other via Grindr, a dating app for men.

 

He pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal intimidation to a 36-year-old Singapore permanent resident and a 32-year-old Australian man.

 

Ransom's modus operandi for both men was the same: He got to know them on Grindr and met them for sex.

 

While the victim performed a sex act on him, Ransom would give an excuse to use his phone before filming the victim in the act.

 

After doing so, he demanded that the victim pay him cash.

 

The court heard that Ransom met the first victim on May 19 last year, the same day they began chatting on the app.

 

The Singapore permanent resident invited the accused to his home that afternoon, where he performed a sex act on the Nigerian as asked.

 

While he was doing so, Ransom took out his phone, saying he wanted to check something on it. However, he secretly filmed the victim performing the sex act on him, before placing the phone in his pocket.

 

HE DEMANDED S$500 FROM VICTIM

After this, Ransom demanded that the victim pay him S$500, but the man refused. Ransom then showed him the video he had taken. 

 

The victim asked him to delete it, but Ransom refused and threatened to leak the video and ruin his reputation if he did not get S$500.

 

Fearing for his reputation, the victim told Ransom that he did not have S$500 on hand and needed to withdraw it from an ATM.

 

Both men went to an UOB ATM at International Plaza where the victim withdrew S$200 and gave it to Ransom, saying that amount had hit his daily withdrawal limit.

 

Ransom was not satisfied with the money and pressed for the remaining S$300, which the victim withdrew from another ATM. Seeing this, Ransom accused the victim of lying about the daily withdrawal limit and that he needed to pay another S$500.

 

The victim pleaded with him to delete the video, and called the police after Ransom refused. As the victim was on the phone with the police, Ransom followed him and shouted at him, before running away when he realised who he was talking to.

 

While investigations were ongoing, Ransom targeted a second victim.

 

SECOND VICTIM NOTICED THE PHONE ON RECORD MODE

He began talking to the Australian man, who was in town for a business trip, on the same Grindr app just a day after meeting his first victim.

 

Two days later on May 22, 2018, the victim agreed to have Ransom over at his M Hotel room for sex.

 

Ransom headed to the hotel that night and began undressing. He held onto his phone, telling the victim that he wanted to watch pornography as the victim performed a sex act on him.

 

However, as the victim was doing so, he heard a sound from Ransom's phone and realised that he was recording a video.

 

The Australian man questioned Ransom about it and both men got dressed before they began quarrelling.

 

Ransom demanded that the victim pay him S$1,500, but the man refused. Ransom then told him that he had a gun and would kill the victim if he did not hand over the money.

 

The victim suggested trying to get money from the hotel's reception counter, and Ransom walked out of the room with the victim following him.

 

However, once Ransom was out of the room, the victim closed the door and locked it, before calling for the hotel's security staff.

 

Ransom began banging on the door of the room, demanding the cash, but left before the security officers arrived.

 

He was arrested a day later at Hotel 81 Hollywood in Geylang.

 

For the offence of criminal intimidation, Ransom could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, or both. For threatening to kill the Australian man, he could have been jailed for up to 10 years, fined, or both.
