Recommended Posts

Just want to find out some of your favourite cookbooks you have at home. Here are some of mine:

1. Mastering the art of french cooking by Julia Child

2. Baking: from my home to yours by Dorie Greenspan

3. The wisdom of the chinese kitchen by Grace Young

4. Rose's heavenly cakes by Rose Levy Beranbaum

Care to share some of yours?

Yeh, I got this too -Baking: From my home to yours by Dorie Greenspan, is a must have for all baking enthusiasts.

Just Dessert and other baked treats by Daniel Tay - bought it because of the nice pictures and written by boss of Bakerzin, but was very disappointed. More pictures than receipes and the methods were not detail enough and some ingredients are not available in retail stores.

Homemade Loaf Global Baker by Dan Lepard - big variety of bread receipes.

Secret of Nutritional Chinese Cookery by Ng Shiong Mui - a very auntie cookbook but got some very nice and simple dishes and wholesome soup.

Lust for Love of Chocolate by Audrey Tan - a simple to follow cook for various chocolate desserts

Irresistible Pastry by Alex Goh - a very "local", simple and easy to follow for pastry making. His cake and bread making books are also quite good.

There is also this website which I always refer to and I think is very informative for all baking enthusiasts -

Hmm... Anyone here likes Nigella? I have 3 of her cookbooks and i like her recent Nigella Express best. Her recipes are easy to follow and (most of the time) fail-safe :)

Yeah I heard her cookbooks are not bad. My friend tried her fabulous chocolate cake and turned out very moist and delicious!

Just a question, do you prefer cook book or cook video ? I find video is easier to understand

I like both actually. Have not watched too many cooking shows but I thought Jamie Oliver's cooking shows are good. For cookbooks I usually go with the classics like Julie Child's cookbooks. I tend not to get those with too many colorful pictures and providing too little info on the actual recipes.

Hate the Jamie Oliver's show's cameraman. Always swinging his camera, making people dizzy!!

some of my favourite books:

1) heavenly cakes by rose levy beranbaum - very good recipes with very detailed instructions. The best cake book.

2) martha stewart cookies - most recipes I tried worked well with some tweaks (reduce sugar). some recipes can be found on her website.

3) Art and soul of baking by cindy mushet - very detailed explanations in terms of baking science and instructions. Good recipes.

4) 孟老师的美味蛋糕卷 - Very good book on swiss rolls. hardly any need to tweak her recipes.

I have many cookbooks at home, but my favourite is local and asian cooking. i have:

(a) Best of singapore cooking, by mrs leong yee soo (in malaysia it is called best of malaysian cooking);

(b) a taste of india by madhur jaffrey.

i have yet to find a good cookbook for malay cooking though, and i also love malay cooking.

cooking and trying the recipes for family and bf is very satisfying. i think it is so fortunate to be able to cook and show love by cooking for the ones they love.

Hi, I haven't browsed a cookbook for the longest time (too much hawker food and innate laziness to wash up the dishes) but you can try Elizabeth David's books on Mediterranean, Italian and French food. Very patrician and elegant prose.

Learnt how to grill properly as well as make chocolate truffles- you will be amazed how simple it is, based on her recipe. All you need is top notch choc and the very best butter- you'll never buy a hotel choc truffle again LOL

I just bought "Around my french table" cookbook by Dorie Greenspan. recipes look really good and so far tried about two recipes: the apple cake and chicken tagine. The apple cake turned out nice and yes, its impt to use different apples called for in that recipe. The chicken tagine was wonderful! I use my le cruset for it. I highly recommend this latest cookbook by Dorie!
