Racism in the US is not higher than in other countries.  The US has done an excellent job in integrating the Black population, a job that is not perfect but is not inferior to any other racial integration.  And Christ himself may not have been WHITE, no matter all the paintings of him from the Renascence.  And the adoption of the "white religion" by your people is the responsibility of... your people,  who else?

1.  Camaraderie.  CHC members have been together for so many years that a close bond has been cemented.  They will be leaving far beyond their comfort zone to abandon CHC to join other churches where unfamiliar faces abound.

 

2.  Problem of face.  How can they explain to their families & non-CHC / non-Christian friends about their about-turn?  That they have been duped for so many years into worthless financial & emotional / spiritual commitments?  They therefore need mutual support groups to justify their stay in CHC - to show that they are not "suckers" and that their decision to stick with CHC has been correct..

 

I also believe that one possible explanation is the camaraderie factor. In the vdo in an earlier post where members of CHC r upbeat about their future, its interesting to note how often the word "family" used. I hv read elsewhere about members of the "church" who rarely socialise outside the CHC or with non CHC members. That being the case its understandable that a group mentality takes over. It doesnt matter that individuals may hv doubts. Expressing those doubts wild bring down the very social fabric of their lives. These members hv to believe in the CHC, rational thought or no.

Actually I am well aware of black christian and also Latin American Christianity and how bad it had gotten and how it is used as a means of control. The topic is too wide for me to include them as well though I have been indulging these for many years as well. As I went deeper into this years ago once I can thru my own findings that religion has more falsehood and more about control then there are things truth and superstitious.

 

But just to offer a counter view by narrowing this to two commonalities ( Asian and White ) are more then enough on the subject without going into too much complexity beyond the main story and talking over the heads of the majority of CHC sheep.

You raised a good point with "camaraderie".  Like many other churches, CHC is a social club more than a place of true worship of a divinity.  I visited CHC once on a Sunday service at their original place in Jurong. I felt their warmth in the way they treated me as  a guest, and I nearly envied them for their nice social atmosphere. I sat on the front with a bunch of young people and listened to an invited pastor speak and then a sermon by Kong He.  The teenagers around me listened like fascinated and some even took notes. That ended any 'envy' and I felt sorry for those young people being deceived and brain washed.  If they could have read my agnostic mind they would have thrown me out, hahaha.

 

And as you said, saving face must be a strong reason why they hang onto it.  The affair must have been a shock with strong fear of the ridiculous. Upshot, I agree with many of your comments here but in the case of the genocide of Jews I believe ur conclusion may b not quite accurate.

 

The Nazis certainly mobilised the population against the Jews. In fact it probably took only a few tens of thousands to start the mobilisation. The staged atrocity of Krystallnacht resulted in spreading a general mass hatred. But until 15 yrs ago it was general agreed by historians that the general public were not really aware of the concentration camp system n its deadly purpose.

 

Then further research (outlined in the book Backing Hitler: Consent and Coercion in Nazi Germany by Prof Robert Gellately) shattered the myth. The vast majority were perfectly well aware of the camps, that they were being filled with Jews n that many died there. But it is still accepted that Hitler n his thugs kept the final solution - the mass killing of 6 million Jews - utterly secret n known only to a few of his top lieutenants n those who worked in the camps.

Nah I am not trying to equate Singapore's CHC to the Nazi Germany but the it is watered down version of tactics used. It's all about knowing the right buttons to press.

 

I agree... a lot has to do with circumstances, opportunities that provides itself, adapting fundamental tactics in a localized arena and with some luck you kick start something that will propel you toward where CHC is in Singapore and many other such success stories we heard be it for good or bad purposes.

 

I am sure there is a degree of failed attempts by others who dream of starting a mega church or power like Kong Hee. I think everyone has seen this all their lives if they choose to look around from religion to business to politics to even something as simple as a family feud. The end goal might differ, the playing field and 'ingredients' varied depending on the playing field..etc But the ultimate thing is power of control, ideological domination and greed. With some going further .... declare themselves God.

 

I have seen my fair share of other religious who also set up churches of their own after leaving churches they belong to and even one case of taking in a lot of money and lost it all and declared bankrupt after misusing the funds. I know personally someone personally who gave more then 1 Million dollar herself over a few years and even after all that a few of the sheeps gave him money to help him since he is jobless, paid to take the bastard on their oversea holiday and not blame him for losing all the money of a moderate size of a few hundred sheeps using a rented space for their weekly services.

 

At my old job with an office at Havelock road.. my neighboring office was rented by a young couple (abt 25yrs) which I thought moved in to start a business but then starts seeing many young people going in and out of the office day and night. 3,000 sq ft. But not long later since moving in, as I work late often ..soon I hear music coming from next door in the evening. Then the familiar tunes and lyrics of church hymns came thru the wall  ( I was born Catholic )  They were quiet and not say much so I did not care much about it. Seem they were a couple but not married yet. Our floors' lift was right at their front door so looking in was easy.

 

Large room with about 50 folding chairs, some simple tables and a lot of empty space. 1 computer pc in the corner and a simple projector system. Very sparse. From what I make out, most of the followers were teens, young working folks mainly and seem mainly educated English speaking ones. Not surprising as I have seen some churches who specially target young universities and college people... ( people with earning power ) In about one year, they upgraded to 2-3 times more folding chairs but more sturdy and padded, a few Apple Mac computers, overhead projector with a mechanizes auto screen, a live band with a full drum set with electric kit, guitars, keyboards and amplifiers, constructed office room now with proper furnishing...etc.  One of my nosy colleague found out the couple was getting married. And the wife was with a BIG ROCK on her ring finger. a bigger congregation and still rather young group.  10% tithes sure pays well.

 

The progression seem to be more lucrative then my former company's business heheheh... In the company I work, it has to pay salaries, pay for developing products, packaging design, manufacturing of products, product licenses, pay GST and Tax, pay CPFs of staff,

 

Here they sell stories from a book, pay lip services at a pray services and point to the sky and call it Heaven with many special power beings that is invisible. all with hardly any operation or material cost. THAT IS THE BEST BUSINESS MODEL if I ever saw one. heheh...

But it was clearly introduced merely as an illustration as to how history has shown us so many times that a charismatic leader with a small bunch of faithful acolytes can twist logic, control the means of communication n manipulate tens of millions to willingly do their own bidding. I suggest its quite interesting to compare what is going on in the Catholic Church today with what has happened with the CHC. I am not n hv never been a Catholic but I hv a huge admiration for the present Pope Francis. When the Vatican hierarchy sent Cardinal Bergoglio a first class air ticket for the 13 hour overnight flight from Buenos Aires to Rome to attend the conclave at which he was elected Pope, he decided to downgrade himself n sit in economy class. Instead of living in the spacious Vatican apartments, he has elected to live in modest rooms in a small Vatican inn. He is not driven around in large cars. He elects to use a small Fiat.

 

The humility and moral integrity of this man as the leader of a huge worldwide church - whoever claimed that Kong Hee runs a "mega church" with a mere 20,000 or so supporters? - is an example to leaders of all Christian churches. Instead of living a lavish lifestyle as a great many of his cardinals hv done n continue to do, he is trying to gain control of the out-of--control Vatican finances n rein in the overspending. 

 

Two new books give evidence of the financial mismanagement of Vatican funds under previous Popes - some allege this is why Pope Benedict resigned because he simply could tackle the task - which Francis is determined to reform against massive resistance. The leadership of the CHC would benefit from a dose of some of this man's patent honesty n simplicity.

There is a lot of carrying away in this scandal involving the CHC and I see nothing wrong in that.  Not every day "honorable men of God" are exposed as crooks, and it is good to feel all the satisfaction we can from this exceptional case of justice. I consider the CRC managers as minor petty criminals (although those millions are nothing petty).  As I said before, deception is rampant in this world, and the CRC didn't hurt its victims as much as, say,  the tobacco industry, the manufacturers of Coca Cola, of junk cereals for kids, of alcoholic beverages, etc. etc.

 

I also find Pope Francis admirable, and we may be living an important period in the history of the Catholic church.  What I find in him is not a 'sainthood' but much, much smartness.  His decision to follow the example of the Franciscans is a recognition that there is a way to find heaven on earth. By not flying first class, riding in a limousine, living in a palace, being attended by servants,  he gives up NOTHING.  After we are around long enough we can recognize that frugality is not a hardship, but a source of satisfaction.  In exchange for his frugality which costs nothing, he gets extraordinary recognition, which he can put to good use to do a very positive work for his church that must fill him with satisfaction.  He is surely a very happy person.  We should hope that he is around long enough.
