Guest thatwasrunie
my first advice is to google the uses of your lens. like for example fish eye and etc etc.then pick what kinda photography you think you want to practise first.research on lens.then slowly play around with manual mode. that's how i started atleast. soxite
If you buy Canon off the shelf, there should be a free course. I bought Sony a55 and just managed to sign up for a basic course though I know a little about SLR which is similar to DSLR. Have not moved to DSLR as I was still comfy with ultra-featured compacts till end last year. My kit lens is only 18-55mm and bought 3rd party macro and telephoto attachments as well as TTL flash and ring flash from overseas as it is cheaper. Canon 500D or 550D are good camera body and the other is the lenses. Generally, you have a good zoom lens for both basic macro and telephoto ... useful for travel photography.I guess for a start, borrow some basic books ... if you can, get a book solely on Canon 550D which I know Chinese books in Bras Basah might have.Know what kind of photography you like to focus on which makes it easier ... e.g. travel photography, macro photography, portrait photography, sports photography and so on .... this will help you also to decide what type of lenses are useful. Then, start with Auto mode and see how the camera compose the shots though not all Auto mode have very good adjustments. Note the f-stop and iso and so on ... After that, play with P mode using different ISO so see the effects ... These two will take some time for you to digest. Then look for the how you like to compose the shots using Auto and P mode ... see pictures you like and try to duplicate them then slowly you'll learn about A and S and M functions.A step at a time and soon you'll get the hang of taking nice photographs. jarboy 1 Quote Trust is more important than monogamy. - Savage Garden, Affirmation

soxite
Thx for your advice! Now I feel like getting one for myself In the end, you need to know what pictures you like to take (ok, apart from our private pics). I've set some criteria when I decided to move into DSLR so it helps in narrowing down my choice.I wanted a lightweight DSLR (though weighted one feels better) due to travel photography and to minimise bulk; a swivel LCD screen and with lots of features withing $1000+. So I narrowed to Canon 60D, Nikon 5000 and Sony a55. I chose a55 because it meet my criteria and offered a lot more things like GPS tagging, swipe pano and an Auto+ format for those moments I need a quick shot ... it also is less complicated so I will be more motivated to take pictures. There are disadvantages though like limited choices of lenses and Sony or Minolta compatible only accessories.Do take note of what you like to do and what you want to have for a camera and be aware of the advantages and disadvantages ... this will help a lot in making the decision to buy a DSLR.
