It’s just human that we are attracted to beautiful places and beautiful people

A thread like this seems to be a good testament to the gay community at large: We are too concerned with looks.

Be it the face, the body, or the size of a penis, I think a good portion of the gay community endears in judging others.

Of course, I don't speak for everyone, but it just seems to be that way sometimes. Be it talking with friends or strangers, there is always this desire for someone who is good looking, with a perfect body and god knows what.

I think it's just not realistic.

Everyone has their flaws. Looks fades, blah blah blah. Point is that I think a guy's attractiveness should be based on his actions. Is he confident? Charming? Hard-working? Willing to help others? I find these are better gauges of attractiveness as compared to someone's DNA.

More teens go for plastic surgery in Singapore

SINGAPORE, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- More young people are going for plastic surgery to get a "head start", a local newspaper reported on Sunday.

A check with nine plastic surgeons and aesthetic doctors showed an increase of about 30 percent in the number of clients under the age of 21 over the past five years, the Straits Times said Sunday.

Charisse underwent surgery on her eyelids when she were 18. She was happy with the results, though she would not consider any other cosmetic surgery in the future.

Her younger sister Christel followed suit when she turned 14 two years ago.

"I was not too worried about any medical risks because I know that it is a simple procedure. Seeing my sister go through it also made me less frightened," said the younger sister.

Compared with a decade ago, the more invasive procedures live double eyelid surgery and liposuction are now more popular.

Andrew George Tay, a plastic surgeon at Novena Medical Center, attributed the trend to greater awareness of plastic surgery.

"With the Internet, information about various procedures is easily available. The youth are also influenced by the media. When they see celebrities with enhanced features, they want the same," he said.

About seven clients below the age of 21 now go to Tay's clinic each week, up about 50 percent from three to four years ago.

"I think more young people are keen on plastic surgery now because they are influenced by the media and celebrities who have gone for it. But I think that any surgery that is more invasive presents unnecessary medical risks," said Christel.

Singaporeans are the driving force behind Indonesian doctor Arthur Tjandra's success: at his 18,000 sq ft Medan clinic Elixir de Vie, up to 90 per cent of those who come in for a nip and tuck are Singaporeans.

The rest are made up of Americans, Taiwanese, Malaysians, Australians and Indonesians.

And of all the Singaporeans - mostly women in their 20s and 30s - who fly there in the hope of coming home looking better, 90 per cent are there for liposuction.

So lucrative is this foreign market that he ran a promotion last year offering a 30 per cent discount on procedures to attract foreign patients.

Of the promotion, he said: "Our intention was to produce as many excellent results as possible and allow patients to spread it by word of mouth. We have never advertised up to now."

The lure for Singaporeans' A vanity fix at the fraction of the price back home.

Dr Tjandra charges $650 per area while prices in Singapore generally start from $2,000.

Since he opened his clinic in November 2008, around 180 Singaporeans have passed through his doors. He said he is already booked till the end of January.

He said that he makes it compulsory for all liposuction patients to stay as in-patients for at least two to three nights in the clinic after the procedure, whether or not he had removed more than 1 litre of fat.

"If they can't stay, we reject the case," said Dr Tjandra, who uses the traditional liposuction method of a syringe and cannula which he claims is the safest of all available methods.

An arts management student in LaSalle College of the Arts, who wanted to be known only as Denise, spent $20,000 on Vaser ultrasound- assisted liposuction in Singapore two years ago.

She had fats sucked from various parts of her body, but was upset when it resulted in dents because of uneven removal of fats.

Recently, she went to Dr Tjandra in Medan and had liposuction done on her tummy and thighs. It cost her $1,950 for the surgery, $180 on air tickets and another $120 on accommodation.

Also gunning for the Singaporean dollar is Dr Preecha Tiewtranon, chairman and chief executive officer of Preecha Aesthetic Institute, a sizeable plastic surgery outfit in Bangkok.

About 10 per cent of his patients come from Singapore, and of this, about 10 per cent are there for liposuction, he said.

Most are between the ages of 20 and 30 and pay between 100,000 and 150,000 baht (S$6,300) if the procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.

But Singaporean doctors are trying to beat the overseas competitors at their own game.

In August last year, Singaporean doctor Z Teo set up his own operating theatre in Manila and assembled a team of Filipino plastic surgeons.

While the set-up there caters to Filipinos, Singaporeans looking for some savings have been flying there, where his team performs the surgery while he supervises since he is not licensed to practise in the Philippines.

Out of the 20 Singaporeans who went for a cosmetic fix last year, about eight were for liposuction.

These patients pay 30 to 40 per cent less than what they pay here, said Dr Teo, a general practitioner.

"Here, a patient has to pay surgical fees, plus the services of an anaesthesiologist and the use of an operating theatre," said Dr Teo, who runs Z Medical Aesthetics in Paragon and is married to a Filipino dermatologist.

Yes that's true, most SIngaporeans just go with their original looks and their true selves. That is one of their secrets in looking great that men from other countries cannot even copy. Singaporeans have more important things to focus on with their time and fortunately they are blessed with original good looks which enable them to spend less time in the mirror.

Whatever reported in the media about getting cosmetic fixes are only a small percentage blown up.

I must be very lucky that most if not all my surrounding friends, colleagues and neighbors are like that. In fact I’m seeing more and more couples be it straight or gay are bonded together by their mutual inner beauty and by love than look. Look will fade with age but the inner beauties will remain if not enhanced as they age. More loving, more understanding as time passes :clap:

Some are less fortunate, seeing only ugly things – life must be sad and pathetic for them – wish they are blessed with better friends.

I have no doubt that there are some who judge people by appearance, it’s obviously shown here in this thread but majority of Singaporeans I live with, work with and interact with do not judge. We live happily together regardless of race, look and that’s why we love Singapore and we call it HOME.

God is always fair, we are always blessed with something; some may have noted it and fully utilising it while others are still searching it.

i think it is genes + weather + diet . the local chinese here dont look very chinese (from PRC). got those mixed race features i think. mixed from southeast asian people maybe?

Chinese here look more like Vietnamese and coastal southern Chinese. It is on the face. Plus many hv perankan blood. Just ask their grandparents if they wear baju at home and eat pork with malay herbs, if got, then confirmed yes.

They dun hv the Altaic features. More on Austronesian features. Austronesian people can refer to Taiwan aborigines, Khmer, Pinoys, basically from SEA Asia and Southern China. all the way to Polynesia. It is a very ancient human tribe, seafaring.

Exactly. Ask yourselves, many of you secretly want to be goodlooking and look your best (nothing wrong with that), but many are hypocritical to dare admit it. Some even feel 'proud' to look ugly and unattractive, o come on!! What low self esteem...!!

U need to devote time, $ to know what hair style/color suits you.

Now in my 50s, I m comfortable with my looks - atheletic, sporty. monotones - white, grey, red, beige

Just imagine your body is a house - your eyes are the windows, your mouth, the entrance, your body,the rooms.

Must learn to keep them clean & tidy, at least.

i think it is genes + weather + diet . the local chinese here dont look very chinese (from PRC). got those mixed race features i think. mixed from southeast asian people maybe? Chinese here look more like Vietnamese and coastal southern Chinese. It is on the face. Plus many hv perankan blood. Just ask their grandparents if they wear baju at home and eat pork with malay herbs, if got, then confirmed yes. They dun hv the Altaic features. More on Austronesian features. Austronesian people can refer to Taiwan aborigines, Khmer, Pinoys, basically from SEA Asia and Southern China. all the way to Polynesia. It is a very ancient human tribe, seafaring. Normal smile, and the guy is intelligent, pragmatic, able to give good advices.

Well this topic is about Singaporeans in general and NOT about me.

Anyway to those who dislike me, one question - Can you look better than me or my peers when you are 50.. or worse, can these kids live up to 50

if they are so interested in lamblasting older people. They would probably go for plastic surgery or died of bitterness before reaching this age.

So, please focus on the general gay population, instead of throwing stones at me.
