Enelym1978
I changed from California Platinum to Pure Fitness. Basically from Cali all club to Pure all club (mind you, they only have 2 outlets in Singapore haha). What I was paying at Cali for the Platinum membership, 2 years pre-paid: $66 including GSTWhat I am paying now at Pure, 2 years pre-paid, all clubs: $167 including GSTFF quoted me $125 for 2 years pre-paid, all clubs. Yes it's a huge difference but: Cali: more and more crowded (because I go there after work, basically 7-9pm, Taka, Bugis or Raffles Place), dirty changing rooms and showers. Sometimes smelly. You have lots of cleaning uncles but you still find so many hair and dust in the corners and on the floor... To me the biggest issue was the crowd. Classes are super crowded, you see a horde waiting outside the glass door before a class and rush in to get a place. You wait your turn at machines, don't even mention the free weight area... sometimes you just give up. Lots of guys just bumming around, chatting with their friends while sitting on the machine, doing a few reps, chat for 2 minutes, work again, play with their phones.... waste of time. The towels at Taka are getting thin and tiny and smelly... seriously...Good thing is that it's quite big, lots of equipments and choices but what's the point if you need to wait all the time? Again, all this depends on the timing. There should be no issue at all if you go early morning or during office hours, early afternoon for example. Pure: small gym at Knightsbridge, which means less machines and choices. BUT, there are less people, much less. So you can move from a station to another without having to wait. Somehow the atmosphere there is more serious, people really work out and focus on it. Even the PTs look more professional. Classes need to be booked in advanced, call in or online. Places are limited for each class, so once the max amount of people is reached for that room, you just can't book anymore. There is a penalty system to avoid having members signing up and not showing up.They provide unlimited fluffy and pleasant smelling towels, just go and change yours if needed, no checks. They provide t-shirts, sleeveless t-shirts, shorts and they are all clean, they even have socks. Shower cubicles are clean with shower heads and rain shower. Small steam and sauna rooms, enough for the crowd there. Basically, 1h at Pure makes me work out more than 1h30 at Cali. Classes are good, the instructors are super motivated and from different backgrounds: HK, PH, Brazil, Colombia, Americans. So yeah, I'm poorer now but at least I get what I need. Again, it all depends when and where you are going to work out. Cali just didn't work out for my pattern. Why not give a try at his new brand opening up soon: Virgin Active (yes, same as Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Cola etc...) the new Richard Branson brand here in SIngapore. They already have 100s of clubs in Europe. PS: Cali only has 4 branches, FF has 13 last time I checked on their website but who needs so many anyway....? keyboard
Seems like a new branch of Fitness First will be opening soon in Dec 2013 at Jurong East MRT (Westgate). Trying to find out more information, however, their website is confusing at best. For those seasoned gym goers,1. what would be a reasonable membership fee to pay monthly?2. Fitness First has the platinum and normal branches, whats the difference.3. Anyone who is like a friend of their sales staffs there to possibility get a bulk discount for signup? (Also see if more people from here are interested too).4. And not all branches provide workout clothes (and it's not easy to find this information on their website)5. West side gyms doesn't seem to be many, any other recommendations apart from the one at Jurong East MRT (find this one very convenient, literally at door step of MRT) Any advise is appreciated. I'm paying $140 (GST not included) per month. With GST that's $155/month. And this is for 1 year package. 2 years will be slightly less $128/month (GST not included yet). If you're applying only a HOME membership then it'll be slightly less as well (home means only 1 club such as Jurong East only. Platinum meaning Home + all other clubs (including international). Mine's platinum. 2. Platinum branches provide workout attire (top and bottom). Normal branches do not. 3. I signed up via a personal friend who works as a consultant. No discount though apart from the extra freebie + 7 days "trial" so I paid only slightly less. 4. Answered in point 3 5. I heard True Fitness also coming to west area though not confirmed. keyboard
I have to admit, i'm kinda shocked at how much to pay for gym membership nowadays. Is it the same for Cali and others? The non-big gyms I have asked for prices are all way below the $100 range. What are we paying for actually in these big gyms?
Gray
You're paying for a quality gym environment. I'm also paying $150+ monthly. My knowledge for Cali gyms is that they have a much cheaper rate of around $40 - $60 monthly, but they're not so good quality wise. Think they've got plenty of bad comments and a bad rep accumulated over the years. Personally, I've been a member of both True Fitness and Fitness before and I've been a promoter for Cali Fitness before, and of these 3 I've had experience with, Fitness First has the best environment and quality of service. Cali fitness has a a bad rep and True fitness has pretty stuck up staff and poor level of service compared to Fitness First. If you think it's too pricey and you don't mind cali's bad reputation then try cali. If you don't mind crowd, try clubfitt. I've heard good things about safra energyone as well. Actually, you don't have to pay this much for a gym if you're just a casual gymmer. It may not be worth it.

ejszaka
I can't speak for other gym, as I am with TF. I am seriously considering a switch when my membership ends. One year from expiration, the consultants are already asking if I wanna extend, cos they will be upping prices. I paid upfront for a 5 year membership previously. Paid by interest free installment over 3 years. Works out to $48++pm. They do have a BLACK membership that allows you to use the lounge, have a specially cordoned off locker room, etc. Besides that, all other facilities are common and shared with other members. Didn't think it is exclusive enough to consider it. I must say besides the brand new equipment at Suntec branch, I am not impressed with TF after being with them for so many years. Perhaps they fail to realise it's not about just how big the space is, and how much equipment you have. It's the whole experience. I don't know if anyone else would concur. The new branch is huge, but floor area for mat work is seriously lacking. There is a big open space, but no mirrors where u can check your form. Mirrors are placed in front of free weights area, but only see your waist upwards. And a lot of full length mirrors in front of cardio machines. For what? I really don't know. Need to constantly check your form when you are on treadmill or elliptical walker meh? Whole stretch of mirrors behind a lot of machines. Yes.. behind. A whole rack of barbells and ezbars that you can lift with one arm. 2 EZ bars which u can change the weights, but you will have to walk from one end of the free weight area.. to the other end, to pick the weights u need off the smith machines. Bad planning to the max. Shower cubicles are definitely improved. But locker areas still sorely lack sufficient benches or sitting areas for people to put on their shoes. Lockers are neither long nor short. Your shirt (regardless S, M, L, 15, 16, 17) will not hang it's full length in the locker even though they provide hangers. And I've given feedback way way before the gym re-opened. Fell on deaf ears. And any folks gungho enough, try working out without shoes. Wear your slippers. See if any personal trainer stops u. Try slamming and throwing the dumbbells around... see whether anyone stops you. Try the one and only upright machine that works the hamstrings. See if it rocks like a see saw. If you like running up and down between 3 floors for your workout, that's Chevron. Bring in a plate of raw chicken into the steam room. The temperature is usually enough to steam it good enough to eat. Asked the cleaners to tune it down .. answer: we can't and dunno how to control it. If you like a tight butt to butt squeeze in the lockroom (not to mention, you must master standing on one leg to put on your shoes), that's China Sq. Enelym1978
Cali is ok lah. It's not bad, their equipment is good. The big big problem I had with them is that it's super over crowded (unless you go early mornings, or afternoons) but if you're someone who goes to gym after work.... better avoid all these FF, Cali in the downtown area. It's super crowded, dirty due to the volume (Cali Taka had hair on the floor, dirt marks, dust accumulating in the corners... But they are cheap. I paid less than $70 on a 2 years contract for all clubs (Platinum) and then they throw in an extra 6 months for free. What they do at Cali is pure VOLUME. They don't care about the rest. They attract the masses by offering low monthly fees and this results in bad work out atmosphere. If you like taking classes, forget about them at Cali after 5PM in downtown locations. You can see all these people waiting outside the door for the previous class to end and then rush in to grab a mat and get a spot... even if you end up with a spot, it's crowed so you gotta be careful in your movements... really not nice. And they are stingy with towels.... they give you one small one big. Forget about asking for a replacement towel if yours is too wet. Again, you get what you paid for. Of course this is only for those big brand gyms. If you to smaller, neighborhood gyms, it's much much cheaper. I think i've been to a GymBoxx or something like that once, in Bedok, and you only pay a few bucks per visit. But: no changing rooms, no showers, no steam room, no sauna, no towels... And yes, Cali sales people are ANNOYING... that guy kept calling me every single day a few months before my membership expired... I told him to stop calling me, that I would let them know if I wanted to extend, provided they gave me a good price. But he kept calling, messaging and whatsapping!!! So so so annoying. Steve5380
It might be too late for me after put on so many weight over the years but really thinking to rejoin gym to get healthy other than eating right. Really thinking which gym should I join, FF or Cali? Kindly give me ur point of view. If you think that a gym can make up for not eating right, you may be fooling yourself. Changing your nutrition to healthy food and eating the right amount in the right timing has a much profound impact in the composition of your body and its health. Exercise helps, especially the weight training that promotes muscle formation. Having heard of the gym business in SG, you probably get equally screwed with FF or Cali. Beware of expensive packages and long contracts, of personal trainers eager to earn their money with you. Get the simplest, least expensive option, at least until you know you will stick with the exercise and get your money worth out of the gym membership. riverrobles
I still prefer Fitness First , good and flexible pricing - I started as a weekend warrior so the payment was low compared to the full scale 7 days a week gym goer. The weekend warrior package is catered for people who are only available on weekends, the pricing was reasonably low however after knowing they offer qualified (and hot straight) personal trainers I signed-up after 2 months of doing the weekend warrior thing. Btw, you can have a starter trainer first and if you don't like him you can readily switch to another.I learned using the machines and learning the correct posture and stance from my trainer who is also now my friend. Also, in my line of work its very convenient because most of their gyms are in Asia Pacific where I mostly travel coz of my job . An added bonus is that there is also a FF gym near our company's German HQ. Anyway, they can give you a free trial when you sign up, many freebies, if you recommend someone and he signs-up you get freebies too.
