New Bangkok Airport

erection day

Recommended Posts

Kind of amused to read in the papers that there're cracks in the new Bangkok airport runway. So new and yet so quickly showing signs of age. I myself was slightly dissappointed with the airport. My impression is that its kind of drab- the hight dull concrete ceiling and mostly greyish interior do not help much. And where are the trolleys? I remember on my last trip back after clearing immigration, it must have taken us 10min just to locate a trolley to hold our bags at the other end of terminal. But all in all, still preferable to the old airport of course.

I just got back from Bangkok and my first impression of that new airport wasnt good. It was quite chaotic and messy, people pushing trolleys here and there, some of the directions were unclear and the check in area was too packed since space at the counter was limited. Especially it was so stuffy while waiting in the line, guess their air cond is insufficient for such a big space.

Exactly what I thought. It was really quite stuffy inside and the signs are not clear at all.

There're report that if the runway cracks are too serious, they might temporarily close part of the airport for repair. And shift some operation back to the old airport.

Yes, it's just been reported on CNA that some flights, mostly domestic without connection, will be diverted to the old Don Muang airport in two month's time pending cabinet approval. Obviously the runway cracks are quite bad and 11 aerobridges are deemed unsafe. Also, the airport has not received international safety approval from the international council. Well, I hope they sort it out soon.

Today's Straits Times reported that "about 50 passengers a day are injured by the ungainly baggage trolleys" at the new airport.

"A frantic effort is under way to build more toilets because they are not enough of them"

"Signage is non-existent or inadequate. The floor is difficult to keep clean, the fabled glass panels impossible to maintain"

"Interior layouts are impractical and confusing" and more problems...

Is the airport really that bad?

Hmmm...

For me, on arrival, immigration quite fast, lugguage too.... took abt 20 to 25 mins.... although the immigration staff looks very unhappy....

Only thing is that the arrival area kinda narrow..... passengers from a few flight exiting from same exit...( lucky now got I think 5 or 6 exits as compare to Don Muang).... so well some improvement... anyway narrow and alot of people.... no wonder alot of lost passengers....

Interior of airport... if u see the ceiling... macham as if still in construction.... toilet wise... yeah... kinda lacking and quite far away...

smoking areas before departure oso quite difficult to find almost tour whole airport to find.... but lucky got notices written on paper with marker... hahha

Overall..... got room for improvement...

News just out that the old Don Muang Airport will be permanently reopen to cope with the massive traffic woes and other problems which have plagued the new airport ever since. It finally seems like the new airport is not ready to cope afterall. The old airport will be open in 49 days' time. Well, hope it wont add to more confusion. Imagine your taxi driver bringing you to the wrong airport!!!

Talking about their former premier Thaksin, he was featured in Times magazine in an insightful interview. I particularly like the last line of the article which read: 'Thaksin and Thailand are not done with each other yet'.

But whatever unfinished business between them, I really hope to see peace and harmony in that country. I really like the friendly people there.

with the move by the Thai Government to use the old airport again, i wonder which aiport AirAsia will land when i and my hubby go BKK next week. Anyway, my hubby say if AirAsia lands in the old airport, it is even better. The old airport is nearer to most hotels in bangkok.

Air Asia is moving back to Don Muang.

SUVARNABHUMI CRISIS

Don Muang to be 2nd international airport

THAI to decide whether to return to old airport for some overseas routes, Air Asia agrees to move

Thai Airways Inter-national (THAI) is considering moving some international flights back to Don Muang, while Thai AirAsia will operate all 80 daily flights out of there, following the Cabinet's surprise decision yesterday to reopen the old airport for both domestic and international flights.

Nok Air and One-Two-Go also said they would base their flights at the old airport.

The decision to turn Don Muang into Bangkok's second international airport came as a major surprise to THAI.

I believe only the 'budget airlines' like Air Asia etc would move to Don Muang Airport temporarily as other commercial flights would remain at Suvarnabhumi Airport as it could be troublesome to transfer from one airport to another one for the connecting flight to other destination.

Some union people in Bangkok are protesting about the reopening of Don Muang airport saying that it will diminish the standing of the new airport to the world. But I think the reputation of the new airport is already damaged.

U-turn again. Now their government is backtracking on a plan to turn the old airport into a second intl hub and says they would study the proposal for SIX MONTHS first. Some domestic flights would still be moved there but only on a vlountary basis. Air Asia, apparently fed up with the the confusion, choosed not to relocate to the old airport afterall.

Don Muang may fly again on March 25

Services for domestic direct flights at former Bangkok international airport at Don Muang can start from March 25, a senior official affirmed.

Flight Lieutenant Pinit Saraithong, general manager of Don Muang Airport, said senior officials from both Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports met last Friday and agreed that airlines which are operating domestic direct flights at Suvarnabhumi could start operations at Don Muang from March 25 on a voluntary basis.

International flights can also switch to operate at Don Muang if they wish. (All 60-plus airlines flying to Thailand from overseas, including Thai Airways International, have said they will stop flying rather than switch back to Don Muang.)

He said repairs on the western flank of the runway at Don Muang, closed since the opening of the new Suvarnabhumi in late September last year, could be finished on March 2.

Preparations on the check-in system, customs checkpoint and shops at Don Muang could be finished on time although it is still unclear how many airlines would be willing to operate direct flights at the former Bangkok international airport, he said.

As the number of flights which will operate is still unknown, the international passenger terminal at Don Muang which is now being used for chartered flights will be used for operations, he said.

Some domestic direct flights have already expressed intention to operate at Don Muang while repairs on damaged sections of the runways and taxiways at Suvarnabhumi are under way.

There are some 100 cracks in the runways and taxiways at the new airport which has been open for less than five months. (TNA)

not surprising, a thai fren has mentioned that there had long been talks on using Don Muang as the domestic airport.

partly for political reason as the new miltary govt tried to discredit the Thaisin's pet project, partly due to cost as well.

however transiting betw airport will be a major issue as traveling distance will take 40 minutes and that's provided no jam.

another concern is if the number of airlines relocated back to Don Muang arent sufficient, the economies of scale of running the airport will not be applicable.

How come so difficult to find trolley at the departure lounge ah??? I had to lug around my overweight carry-on along the long and torturous walk (reminded me of road march :D ). I could see the frustration of many passengers all of whom were scanning left right and center for that elusive trolley? Anyway the airport, as usual, was so packed I really think it's a good idea that they reopen the old airport. Fast.

Well, my experience was no problem getting the trolley which located on apron area when you just arrived with your transport but thereafter what kind of long 'snakey' queue for checking-in and although the TG check-in was 6 counters to left wing and 6 counters to right wing. It took me about 35mins line-up to reach the counter. Maybe it was the peak hours which about 7pm?

Errr. what I meant was it's difficult to get a trolley once you clear the immigration check point and are in the duty-free boarding gate area inside. That' when it becomes almost impossible to find the trolley. At the departure hall, no problem at all.

Ok ED, I understood, the handcarrier bag trolley where located after immigration. I think not so many available lah.

So some domestic flights by Thai Airway will be operating from 25 March at the old Don Muang airport. I dont think it will affect any internatiional route, so we wont be affected at all. Ya!

is it safe to go to Bangkok now? I heard about people targetting chinese with surnames Lee due to the Temasek Holdings Incident. As I will be going with a group of str8 married friends this coming March holidays, I was thinking of giving them the slip and go to Babylon or GSM alone. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

dear guest, do you place your name tag on your chest when you travel, or do you simply wear your army #4

or else how they know your surname?

even if they do, the surname lee is shared by MY, taiwanese, China, HK etc, even Ang Mo name can be Lee.

unless you really wear your #4 with the Singapore Tag and Name Tag

ok maybe immigration when checking your passport but i dont think they are that dumb.

Ever since some operations have been shifted over to the old Don Muang airport, I did notice some improvements in the overall experience, for me that is, at the new airport. It was definitley less chaotic at the departure terminal, the immigration queue was much faster, there were ample trolleys at the stations and, hey, you could easily get a table at the various restaurants inside. What a big change from my last experience only a month ago as compared to yesterday's.

p.s. I had my dinner at a nice looking thai restaurant called Mango Tree. The food is only ok and their prawn spring rolls must be one of the worst I've tasted anywhere.

I think I've ever tried the Mango Tree Restaurant at Surawongse some times ago. They have a good selection of Thai food but the price a bit on high side as the outlet under the Coca Group.

My friend who was in bangkok last month was angry bcause he didnt know he has to pay the airport tax. He got only 1000 baht left so lucky can pay. This left him with only 300 baht. Not enough to eat at the restaurant. Anyway, the airline girl said if the airport tax is less than S$100 means tax not paid. But you dont have to worry if you buy your ticket after Feb.
