A hurdle for this year's event, I really hope our community can see the importance for banding together even more. On the side note, is anyone going alone or planning to go but have no one to go with? I'm meeting a few friends there, anyone who'd wanna tag along can totally do so! Guest Not fair
6 minutes ago, Guest Not fair said: Making fun of gays, emotional and verbal abuses of gays are just as, if not more deadly than physical abuses, especially when repeated ad nauseam in the long term due to cultural and legal sanctions, can accumulate in the long run and result in traumas in the psyches of gays. LGBT suicides, which are not reported or under-reported, usually ticked off as "due to depression" and become "just part of depression suicide statistics" due to cultural sensitivities, many can be ascribed to long term exposure to such culturally sanctioned and unchecked verbal and emotional abuses. What some people regard as the mere passing of remarks, personal opinions or jokes are in fact harmful to others. Not everyone is invulnerable to such remarks or opinions or jokes. To some, such remarks can be cruel and emotionally abusive. We all just have to be more sensitive when expressing our personal opinions. When one side takes off the filter, the other side sometimes may follow suit. Two wrongs doesn't make one right. Lesson noted.

I was gonna comment that even as a gay man, I don't like all gays, and I don't feel totally at ease with certain races. I don't attend Pink Dot partly because of the pretentious lineup of speakers and "celebrities". Of course, in as much as we're embracing some level of Freedom of Speech here, there are limits to what can be spoken (think of Amos Yee lol), and that's beneficial. I just feel this GM's high-handed governance is rather fake. But this is my anti-authority persona speaking. Overall, I believe in harmony still. Guest outside
And outside the barricades… Jul 02, 2017 12.08PM | Johannes Tjendro NEVER mind that Hong Lim Park was off-limits to foreigners yesterday (Jul 1), they made a beeline for the bars around Chinatown. Outlets such as Dorothy’s Bar and Ladies District were live-streaming the event. Some like Gem Bar were offering cocktails at a discount, if you wear pink. Parties were going on at full-swing after the festivities wound down at the green a 10-minute walk away. Pink Dot said that they didn’t organise any of the parallel events, but it seemed that the LGBT-friendly bars in the area took the chance to provide a venue for foreigners who were barred from participating at Pink Dot itself. When TMG visited Club Street, the atmosphere was light-hearted. If the night was meant to be a special celebration, there was little clue of it – no decors beyond two rainbow flags at the top of Gem Bar. Except for the people themselves, clad in pink, drinking and bantering away in merriment. Most people that TMG spoke to got wind of the live screenings and after-parties through word of mouth. Mr Rich Allen, a Briton who had been in Singapore since November last year, was told about the gathering by a friend who was involved in organising one of the after-parties. Malaysian Mr Imran Attrash, who was enjoying his draught beer at Gem Bar, said that he came over after seeing a post about alternative places for foreigners to go to on Pink Dot’s Facebook Page. Pink Dot did say that while they appreciated the initiatives, all external events are unaffiliated with Pink Dot. So it seemed that yesterday night was a contrast to what Mr Attrash had perceived about Singapore, having felt “afraid to explore” different entertainment venues in Singapore as he was unsure if the place would be LGBT-friendly. Mr Attrash was accompanied by Mr Wilson Cuadrado, an Ecuadorian who flew in to Singapore to catch Britney Spears concert the night before (Jun 30). At Oxwell & Co., TMG asked Mr Steven Wright about the changes to Pink Dot this year, especially the erecting of barricades. “I think it’s antiquated, stupid… It was frustrating. But I have to respect it as a foreigner”, lamented the American who had been in Singapore for five years. In the same vein, Malaysian Mr Wil Lin said that it is “one step back from civilisation… The world is more receptive and accepting of LGBT [now]”. Mr Thorin Duffin, a Briton who had been to Pink Dot in the past two years, felt that barricading the event seemed short-sighted, calling* the barricades “metaphorical prisons” that made for “ludicrous aesthetics for international press”. Having worked at the United Nations, he also pointed out that Singapore is a “signatory of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)”. Thus, Singapore ought to fulfill its “international community obligation”, rather than carrying on with “this dichotomy” of having discriminatory laws. Although not a binding treaty as a whole, the UDHR contains certain “political-moral aspirations” that have become “customary international law”, which are binding “as Singapore courts have recognised”. Mr Duffin nevertheless said that: “It’s an opportunity to show that it’s Singaporeans who are supporting Pink Dot.” He intimated that some of his Singaporean colleagues had never gone to Pink Dot but went this year to show support. “By banning foreigners from participating, they actually turn it into a Singaporean-led event.” He added. Another silver lining for Mr Duffin was that there were now external events beyond the confines of Hong Lim Park, as he pointed out that in previous years there was nothing going on outside Pink Dot itself. “Mixed feelings” were Mr Frederic Guiraldi’s response when asked about the barricades. On the one hand, the expat understands that “too many foreigners influencing locals too much” is a valid concern for any government. But the way the ban was presented “felt a little anti-LGBT”. But Mr Guiraldi added that if the “purpose was to make sure it was a local debate… to give voice to local voices, I [he] would have been more supportive” about the ban on foreigners. In fact, he saw this as a silver lining over the ban, saying that he was “very very pleased a lot of [local] people, not just LGBTQ but also allies” turned up to support, including 120 local sponsors who stepped up after foreign companies were banned from sponsoring the event. For him, this showed that the locals themselves are making it clear that LGBT rights are something they value. Taiwanese Mr Jason Yin, who had been to Pink Dot in the past two years, weighed in: “As an Asian, I like that Singaporeans are given a chance to show their support… We expect this to come from the West, but now Asians too can take initiative and lead. It’s not the Westerners [imposing their values], but Singaporeans themselves [who are voicing out].” He added that: “For so long, the G has always said that Singapore is not ready for this and that… but the right question is: ‘What are we doing to prepare the society?’” As the hours passed at that intersection between Club Street and Ann Siang Hill, men and women carried on with their merry-making. For them, it seemed like the night was still young. http://themiddleground.sg/2017/07/02/and-outside-the-barricades/

abang
Where is Singaporean's kiasu-ism when it is most required? Try saying this in Hokkien..我是新加坡“人”。 I am a blue-blooded Singaporean as I was both kiasu and kiasi for this event, PINKDOT. I've anticipated a huge turnout and with my AMDK making his debut presence at the event, we made it a point to reach the grounds before 3.30 pm. Yes, it was some 2 hours before the Community Voices but we were happily mingling with the crowd at the community stalls/stands. We got a first-hand understanding of the various organisations, especially those transgender and lesbians ones..sorry, I was that ignorant of their existence! And because we were early, we managed to secure a good sitting spot to watch the concert, just right in front of the stage. We were able to spread our poncho/groundsheet and arranged our barang-barangs. With regards to IC check, don't you arrive well ahead of time for your flight at the airport? Don't you want to clear all immigration procedures and sashayed through the duty-free shops leisurely? Would you not arrive at the stipulated gate at least 45 minutes before flight time for that final security check? If we are willing to do all these, (yes for a simple 2 hour flight to Bangkok, we still need to reach the airport 2 hours below flight time), would we not do the same for PINKDOT... The same goes for National Day Parade and concerts at Esplanade, the spectators/audience are required to be seated at their designated seat, well in advance of the commencement. So why not for PinkDOT? Kudos for the entire team of organisers, sponsors, volunteers, paid security personnel and most importantly, everyone for making this PINKDOT a BIG success. I am proud to "SWEAT it out" as a Singaporean!
