Guest sensitive
12 hours ago, Steve5380 said: How can your government impose this absurd dictate that foreigners cannot attend a public gathering, and not deserve being called a totalitarian government? We just had a "Pride Parade" in my city, where city officials from the Mayor down attended it with pride and drew the enthusiasm of the crowd... imagine if foreigners would have been excluded!! Nobody needed to check the ID of the thousands who participated. I don't know any free country where places open to the public exclude foreigners. . Because Foreigners in Singapore are not allowed to "interfere" with local Singaporean politics (in fact even with Foreign politics as the Pinoys were prevented to have a picknick on their national day). Every political expression by Foreigners in Singapore is not permitted. Some 15 years back it was stamped into the passport to all foreigners working in Singapore: "You are not permitted to give any political comment...". When Singaporeans asked me how I find Singapore, I responded: "Sorry, I m not permitted to give any political comment!" The Singaporeans are scared that Foreigners will set up a demonstration because their own people won't do or are quite reluctant due to certain reasons. Actually the whole aim is to avoid that foreign organisations/ persons sponsor local political parties. Could always be that some Soros type of person steps in. Putin is probably not supporting a Pink Dot event, his cyber masterminds, don't need to step in probably. It is interesting to note, that the expression about homosexuality in Singapore is seen political. Is it critic on government policy? that is a good question. As the participation on the Pink Dot events in the past years increased the local government attempted to curtail the "participation". If I remember correctly, some locals were complaining that foreigners are participating. Then, the government introduced police checks on the participants. Some years ago (2 years?) the government even disallowed foreign owned companies to sponsor such events like Pink Dot. Any sponsoring must come from local Singaporean companies. The background was that plenty of MNC supported the Pink Dot (just google you will find the details). It was seen as foreign interference to Singapore politics. What you need to know as well is that the Speakers Corner, where the event takes place at Singapore, everyone holding a speech must be Singaporean and must have a pre-approval to speak from the police. To add some flavour: Some years back after the SARS crisis, there was actually a demonstration by Foreigners in Singapore as 1000 of Indian workers gathered in front of the Indian High Commission to demonstrate for the payment of their outstanding salaries. Singapore felt embarrassed and the government quickly initiated new measures for Foreign workers to seek the authorities to assist in receiving outstanding salary payments from their employers. But the event was never labelled as a demonstration, whereas in fact it clearly was. What happened was that local owners of construction / shipping companies ceased paying the salaries of their workers when business declined and the workers ran out of monies and some were left deserted in their dormitories (on that time it was normal that 80 over men were sleeping in one big room in double-decker beds in a big room). Strangely, Singapore doesn't have any regulation on Singaporeans commenting on foreign politics or policies... What you can do Steve is, to wave the rainbow flag at your place and post it to facebook. Just put a tag Singapore. he he Probably, I can always write the chronicles of Singapore. ha ha

If you intended to say that Singaporeans are less homophobic than Americans, not sure who will win. For your info if you were referring to the Florida Shooting on the club, then you better read up the background. The guy was a gay in denial. (Many gays in denial turn violent as they start hating how they are instead of accepting what they are). Otherwise please let us know to what country and event you were referring to. Thanks If not your statement is quite inappropriate. In many very liberal and tolerant or gay friendly countries you will find gay haters, even in Iceland. Serving more as an avenue for capitalist businesses to pink-wash their products and services to get business through acting as if they truly care about diversity or LGBT rights. And funny thing about how LGBT people get a day a year for a big parade as a big middle finger "fuck you we exist" to heterosexual society, ostensibly to commemorate the history of LGBT repression and Pride today in being who we are, when the LGBT community at large is still facing serious issues of racist discrimination within its ranks (just take a look on how gay dating apps like Grindr still allow "no rice, no curry" overtly racist exclusions as criteria for ppl to put on their profiles). That's why I will never support Pink Dot/Pride events, not to mention some other personal traumatic reasons as well. Pride and Pink Dot as we know it today is just a Western invention, following Western lines and values whilst stupidly thinking you can just transplant that into any non-Western society without facing blowback or compatibility issues. A) On the grindr issues, you may have noted that it are mostly Asians who put up that what you call "no curry" statements. I haven't seen many Westerners who put up something as "No Asians" into their grindr profile descriptions but you find a lot of this in Asia / Singapore in the profiles. the Westerner will eventually write to you in a personal response message that he is not into Asians or Hispanics or "anything" but in the very vast majority would never write such exclusions into his profile description. Anyway, why must Asians be so express: I would just recommend anybody to leave such things out of a B) Your opinion of the comercialisation of any LGBT event by MNCs exploiting the actual purpose for own interests, I respect, whereas I find it laudable if such corporations step in and sponsor events. There is not difference if a MNC food manufacturer sponsors an event on healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, often in Singapore the commercialisation purpose overweighs the actual intention for such events because there are too many of such commercial sponsorings. C) Western values And Taiwan, Philippines, Vietnam or Thailand is not Asia? My question is here: homosexuality is a pure Western issue? the fight for acceptance, tolerance and non discrimination is purely a Western value/ concept and has no "value" in any Asian society? Better think about it instead of wrongly labeling things... For sure Pink Dot has a valid purpose in an Asian society as Singapore.
