From yesterday's fireworks outing.

Wow that high the firework?

I shot from below the ArtScience Musuem and never caught it that high with my 14-24mm angle

Yes, that high.  There are always a few bursts of high shells and you just need to time it for them.  ASM is way too close.

For those following my outings,

Thank you!!! And great picture, btw!

Must have taken plenty of time to produce the 9-shot blend, but it's gorgeous. =)

Hope to join an upcoming one then. =)

I caught enough nice shots from where i was last week. I might shoot from the promotary platform  during the actual day I guess.

Nice perspective shot for the bottom one!

Would love to see the top photo unprocessed in sepia and partial color spot but done in black and white.

@lightsmith32 -

Your first pic could do with more pinpoint desaturation, if that was what you were trying to do.  Desat the lot but leave only the people, for example, would bring out the mood which I suspect you were trying to achieve.

Your second pic was a great shot.  Did you happen to have done something whilst converting it to black-and-white, or was the halo effect natural?  If it was natural, that would have been a very very lucky shot, coz its rare to catch such moments.  Bravo!

Welcome back, MP!

I hope you enjoyed your trip ;)

Yup, we did.  Though I was using my mobile phone to take most of my pictures. Walked several km each day (or more).

Here's a few.  I'll relate more about my fav part later...

Hi Meow,

1st pic, i wanted to highlight the vibrance of the people while dulling the background .. i admit i didnt quite acheive it, im learning, thanks for the tips, your explanation is a little technical for me, but ill google it up.

2nd pic, i thought the halo would be nice to complement the ridge line so i faked it ...

Thanks to everyone who commented

@Lightsmith32,

Let me try to explain it further.

Desaturation means to decolor (reducing the pic to B&W or sepia-like as you have tried to do).  Usually to bring attention to a particular subject/thing/person, most folks will selectively retain that one spot (or area) on the picture, whilst decoloring the rest.  A common layman method is to make a duplicate layer of the same picture and decolor it entirely.  Then using the eraser function to erase off (on the duplicate layer) the parts you want to show in color.  Once you have gotten what you want, simply merge the two layers back into one.  Its kind of like having a decolored copy of the picture and cutting a hole in it to show the original underneath.  Hope this explains how it works.  Just remember to save a copy of the original before you do it.

Of course there are other more precise or more complex ways to achieve the same (or slightly better) result, but I think this is probably the easiest for non-tech folks to understand and use.

As for my comment about the halo - usually in photo work, whether doing HDR or basic dodging to brighten up underexposed areas, haloing is a sign of overkill.  While some people (I won't comment on their taste...) may vouch for it as being "artsy", where architectural (buildings) and landscape/scenic pictures area concerned, it just shows a lack of control+knowledge of basic exposure.  Instagram/FB/Tumblr has an abundance of such images... in full technicolor.  On the other hand, in well-taken portraits (usually in a studio or a controlled-lighting setting), it can bring out the subject.

In real life, it is a rare moment if the sun happens to rise or set behind the subject, though buildings are rarely built to be parallel to a sunset/sunrise.  Again, hope this helps in understanding my comment on the halo thingie.

;)
