@Lightsmith32,

Let me try to explain it further.

Desaturation means to decolor (reducing the pic to B&W or sepia-like as you have tried to do).  Usually to bring attention to a particular subject/thing/person, most folks will selectively retain that one spot (or area) on the picture, whilst decoloring the rest.  A common layman method is to make a duplicate layer of the same picture and decolor it entirely.  Then using the eraser function to erase off (on the duplicate layer) the parts you want to show in color.  Once you have gotten what you want, simply merge the two layers back into one.  Its kind of like having a decolored copy of the picture and cutting a hole in it to show the original underneath.  Hope this explains how it works.  Just remember to save a copy of the original before you do it.

Of course there are other more precise or more complex ways to achieve the same (or slightly better) result, but I think this is probably the easiest for non-tech folks to understand and use.

As for my comment about the halo - usually in photo work, whether doing HDR or basic dodging to brighten up underexposed areas, haloing is a sign of overkill.  While some people (I won't comment on their taste...) may vouch for it as being "artsy", where architectural (buildings) and landscape/scenic pictures area concerned, it just shows a lack of control+knowledge of basic exposure.  Instagram/FB/Tumblr has an abundance of such images... in full technicolor.  On the other hand, in well-taken portraits (usually in a studio or a controlled-lighting setting), it can bring out the subject.

In real life, it is a rare moment if the sun happens to rise or set behind the subject, though buildings are rarely built to be parallel to a sunset/sunrise.  Again, hope this helps in understanding my comment on the halo thingie.

;)

Thanks man, much appreciated

MP, did you fly to France for eating sashimi?

Nope, but it was such a convenient spot along the way.

Best of all, it was great value for the price - starter, miso soup, sashimi+rice, dessert and choice of tea.  For €10.50

Meanwhile, we went back to Chambord

And for the Tintin fans, Marlinspike Hall (heheheh, that's not what its real name is....)

Nice pics, MP!

Did you enjoy the A 380?

Ooops, wrong thread! ;)

Haha, I was hoping to get the SG50 livery plane and I got to fly it!  So yeah!

Pretty standard plane - refitted with new premium economy, standard stuff. Full flight, so didn't do much shooting onboard.  Strangely enough, the passengers were 95% non-Asian.  And sadly, the heavy cloud cover on most of the flight blotted out much window-shooting.  So, hardly pics to share.

Hello, new here. So excited to see a thread full of photography enthusiasts. I'm still exploring the kind of subjects I would like to take on so I'm shooting whatever I find interesting. Not really good at editing photos. Using dlsr 700D canon.

Questions: how to post photo here? I read the thread bout using photobucket or bbcode, but I don't want to create another acc for it. Any other way? N it seems that the pics posted here got compressed to lowres.

Your haze is really a scandal!

And it's certainly a problem for outside photography...

Just imagine yourself in a mountain or somewhere high enough n the city was covered with the haze. I could be a pic right there. As long as its not way to thick u can't even see the any building or land.

Yup, a blanket of smog, thanks to corrupt businesses+local government and an a somewhat inept neighbour.

Its sad.

But, here are some phonecam pics (actually excerpts off my Instagram) to tide us over a bit.

Did you try photographing by infrared or enhanced night vision (sorry, I don't know the correct technical terms)?

IR looked crappy.  Mostly because for IR, you need decent sunlight, and with the haze, that kind of decent sun is almost non-existent.  That's why I'm sticking to my phone mostly for this period. The bigger cameras are just earning their keep with work.  :D :D :D

Thanks for this explanation, MP.

I don't know much about photography, sorry!

I for one, resize all my online pics before posting.  Part reason is so that it will be easier to view (small pic, small bandwidth load).  Just a personal habit.  The other reason is because I have had my online images stolen before, so I put only low-res and watermarked versions online.  While even that may not stop the theft, it does at least mitigate the use of any stolen images.  Hope this helps for those who're new.

The same thing that when one "borrows" a link of someone else's photos, do try to get their permission first, even on public domain, some photo owners may be sticky about showing their works on less-mainstream sites/forums.  Or at the very least, credit the source if you are too lazy to ask.  Just a basic courtesy.  ;)

Hi, checking if anyone interested to join a photography trip organised by SGTrekker in Apr next year to Vietnam?

Which parts and what's the itinerary like?

Apr is the tail end of the dry season and that's usually when conditions are less favourable to shooting.  Its also when short and sudden downpours may occur.

Not sure if this thread is only for phone pics. If not, I saw one earlier of a church. I love Church/Cathedral interiors especially their domes. Hope its ok to post these.

Thanks. The first two r Ely Cathedral near Cambridge in England. The third is the Frauenkirche in Dresden. It was totally destroyed during World War 2 but is now restored to its former glory.

The fourth is St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

This is another amazing church - the Wieskirche in southern Bavaria which is one of the world's great rococo buildings

Oooo, the Wieskirche!  Its near Steingaden on the Romantic Road, isn't it?  Its one of the places on my to-visit list!

Yes its just after Steingaden going south. The Romantic Road ends/starts close by Fussen which is about 30 minutes away. Note tho that the Wieskirche is only open to visitors at certain times. Check on its website before u go.

If you r in the area make sure u visit two of mad King Ludwig's nearby castles - the more famous one which is in all the posters at Neuschwanstein n the smaller prettier one at Linderhof. Both well worth visiting.
