Yes its just after Steingaden going south. The Romantic Road ends/starts close by Fussen which is about 30 minutes away. Note tho that the Wieskirche is only open to visitors at certain times. Check on its website before u go.

If you r in the area make sure u visit two of mad King Ludwig's nearby castles - the more famous one which is in all the posters at Neuschwanstein n the smaller prettier one at Linderhof. Both well worth visiting.

Haha you read my mind!  I have both on my list too, though its more likely I'd do Lindhof as I've little desire to be mobbed by horrible crowds at Neuschwanstein..... had that at Chambord when I was there in summer this year.  Well, am planning to visit in 2016.

And another IR for the wintery Singapore

I hired a car at Munich airport n stayed in a lovely small hotel a few kms away with a view of Neuschwanstein at the back. Its easy to get from there to all three sites n if u do, u can visit Neuschwanstein well before the coach tours start arriving fm Munich around 10:00 am.

The other Ludwig castle well worth seeing is Herrenchiemsee off the autobahn between Munich n Salzburg. This was Ludwigs answer to Versailles. Sadly not all is completed but there is a glorious room filled with Meissen pottery n a marvellous Hall of Mirrors.

N if u r in that area it is really well worth spending 2 or 3 nights in the far south-east south of Berchtesgaden near Hitler's lair. The scenery is spectacular n the little hotels not expensive. But its not on the Romantic Road unfortunately.

I take lots of photos but dont know much about the mechanics of a camera or the theory behind the various settings. So I use the Intelligent Exposure mode for most of my photos. Other times I use some of the other settings, as for photos in low light for example. I then make small adjustments on photoshop of Apple Photo.

Where I am not sure I check on internet sites. I love waterfalls n many photos I have seen only show a white wash of colour. I wanted more detail n so I use a much higher shutter speed. When I was in the far north of Finland a year ago I had no idea how to photograph the Northern Lights. So I read how the ISO needs to be high, the white balance changed n shutter speeds of up to 10 seconds. The problem was in such a situation the LED monitor does not give a very good description of ur photo. Since the Light show lasted two hours, I found I had to experiment n ended up with much lower ISO n shutter speeds of only around 3 seconds. These were far better than those at the lower speeds. So I expect much also depends on the type of camera u use.

To add to Wozzit's point of "depends on type of camera u use", I'll add :-

1.  Depends on the subject matter you are photographing.  Eg Laser light show vs smoke painting vs waterfall vs waves vs human portrait vs still life vs insects vs animals in motion... etc

2.  Depends on the environment you are photographing in.  Eg night time over Marina Bay, studio, daytime, nighttime, outdoors, indoor, theatre stage, etc

Using Wozzit's example of the aurora borealis, it can be done with lower ISOs for a cleaner image.  It can also be done at a higher ISO and handheld without tripod.  And that's just two of the possible ways.  If you look at the sample below, it can be done with a 7-minute exposure too, but then you'll have to have a few other tools to help limit the blow-outs during the shot, though in this case, I opted to do a 9-shot multi-exposure, each of just 1 second instead.

These Northern Lights photos were taken with very different settings. That evening the sky was only partially clear n it was the last night of my trip. Im not sure I wld hv risked taking any photos without a tripod

I often get smart-alec dodos asking the question "...which is better ah, Canon or Nikon (or Sony, or Panasonic)?..."
And they will always get the same reply - whichever feels better in my hands and can take the picture.....which is ALL of them.

Then comes the part which pisses most of them off (since the asker is almost always male....), I add "buying/using a camera is not like a penis.  If you want the best one, don't get, because the best one will never be made.  And in the meantime, you'll never get to screw anything, and end up forever miserable."

Whilst my response is generic to guys, the implication is still the same - a camera is a tool meant to capture a picture.  If you do not know how to use it then someone else with a handphone will probably get a better shot (without editing!) than the big camera owner.  So a Redmi can literally trump whatever Canon/Nikon/Sony/etc.

I have a question. Say you want to take a photo of something. How do you combine the aperture, ISO and shutter speed settings?

Aperture is how wide the shutter open, to expose the film to the light.

ISO is the measurement of how sensitive is the film, the higher the number the more sensitive the film to the light.

Shutter speed is the how long the shutter open to expose the film to the light.

So with a sensitive film if the shutter open too wide and close too slow will result is an over expose picture, ie white piece of photo

Likewise the shutter is too faster and not open wide enough will result in an under exposed picture, ie a black piece of photo.

Learned about many years ago before digital cemera era, so not sure if I remember everything correctly.

You decide which is the most important for the photo/situation you want to take, then the second, then the third, put together into a correctly exposed photo.

For example, maybe landscape in bright daylight is ISO 100, then F13, then 1/250.

Check out the first two pages of the following Guide. It takes a little time to read but should make the relationship between the various settings simpler to understand.

If u hv a computer n can use the mac Photo or Photoshop, I dont agree with the advice on page 3 of the Tutorial. I use the programme mode quite often for general shots n will often enhance the photos later. But then I usually only take vacation pics! If u want to b a serious photographer I guess u shld experiment much more with manual settings.

There is no fixed formula, although there is a range of values to work with, it all depends on WHAT-YOU-WANT-TO-GET at the end of the day.  The recently-taken pics below will illustrate some of it.  And I am very sure, given the exact same conditions, take any three other persons and they'd shoot each differently, with different settings.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'll be offline (mostly) over the festive season.  Other than the upcoming X'mas Eve gathering/shoot and the weekend kink shoot, any new outings will be after 31st Dec (so those of you on our Line/Whatsapp photog chat groups who claim not to read messages there - this is meant for you!).  Existing outings are all closed since they are full.  See you when I see you.

Wishing everyone happy holidays!  :D

There are photography chat groups? I'm just a casual photographer. I use a phone to take photos and don't specially go to find places to take photos at. I'm the kind that takes photos of food and other experiences.

Would I be qualified to join one of the chat groups?

Why not?  I use a phone too.  Almost everyone else who owns a smartphone does.

There are a few photo-related chat groups around to choose from.  Speaking very bluntly - some are more interested in finding dates through them, others are geared toward sexual ends.  Most are very open to admitting anyone, while some only admit those of their type.  Some exist solely for social gatherings like clubbing/drinking/etc.  Why do you really wish to join a group - that's the reason for you to choose which one of them to join.

I'm more of a purist in a way, so I'd say you probably fall into the category I'd call insta-snapper, instead of photographer.  However, if you are keen to find others to take pictures (whether with phone or camera or film), then start by going for one of their group outings.  Find those with small groups (6 or less pax).  That way you will really get to interact more with the other participants.  If you are looking just to have another bunch of 15-50 chatmates just to yammer on Line or Wechat or Whatsapp with, then the previous para will suit you better.

Hope this answers your question.  :)

Yup, that does answer my question. I do agree with the term insta-snapper.

Is there a listing for these photography groups? I'm referring to the smaller ones mentioned. I'm hoping to find a group that has similar interests in photography as me.

Just have to partake in a few (there are more than 3 on BW alone....) and decide for yourself which you find more to your taste.  I've joined one of the others and left after finding its not to my taste (described in my previous post).  I maintain my own private photo forum and Line group too, but those are only offered to folks I've met in real life.  We share our phone snaps in there all the time, whilst our better photos are shared and critiqued on our private forum.

Thank you.  Other than my infrareds, none of my photos are edited.  My fonecam pics are on the same moniker on Instagram, though I do have a separate insta for my more professionally taken pics.

Ooh. I was actually wanting to know where I can find or who I can contact to join these groups since there doesn't seem to be any information on where I can join any of these photography groups on the forums here.

Next outing will be on Sat 23 Jan, morning. :)

Outing #553 - Sat 23rd Jan 0800 to meet-up.  Meeting point will be a northern MRT station, expect to walk a fair bit.  One can expect to shoot scenes with water and nature, as well as man-made structures along the way.  As with every one of my photo outings, this one is for taking pictures, and is opened to all (incl non-LGBT folks).

For those who are keen AND able to join us, please PM me.  Name+mobile contact, as all liaison shall be strictly via whatsapp or sms.

However, those who just want to "...see first, dunno whether too far or too early..." please do not waste our time.  Thank you.

:)
