Freaking cringeworthy and an utter embarrassment.

Whose million-dollar idea was it to do a ripoff of Gaga's Bad Romance, and is it even legal anyway?

Gaga's record company should sue for copyright infringement.

lighten up. nowadays, singaporeans are so negative and so anti everything thats its becomeing a nation of whiners. does it make your life worse? lol.

I think it is not that we are whining. It is nothing wrong in saying a bad piece of work, BAD. :)

Actually I will only think that it is distasteful.

Yes! totally agree! It's not about the whining too much but the discernment between what is good and what is bad. If you want to do parody, it better be downright funny but still intelligent. Agree ;)

Lady Gaga rip-off ripped out

NDP organisers did not have the rights to modify lyrics

By Jermyn Chow

THE National Day Parade (NDP) organisers are in a bit of a fix after they modified the lyrics of a Lady Gaga hit to create a song about the parade's goodie bag.

They performed the ditty, called the Fun Pack Song, once at last Saturday's rehearsal for the parade, and had planned to repeat it for the pre-parade segment on Aug 9.

The clip of the performance of the song, which modifies the lyrics of Lady Gaga's Bad Romance, has gone viral and been panned by netizens on YouTube.

Last night, the parade organisers said they had secured the public performance permit for a series of songs, including that hit.

'But we did not realise that the rights obtained did not include rights to modify the lyrics of the song. We are currently working to rectify this,' said the chairman of the NDP show segment, Colonel Ong Tze-Ch'in, in a statement last night.

He did not specify the kind of rectification to be made, but it is understood that the Fun Pack Song will not be performed until a go-ahead is obtained from the publisher of the song and Lady Gaga's recording company.

*facepalm*

The song itself is already an idiocy. They had better not ever use it or try the same trick again.... :angry2:

Song not so catchy... although the "Next station: Raffles Place Interchange" announcement is rather memorable....

But I dun like the last part of the video:

"Singapore is a melting pot of races and nationalities... Singapore is home to the world"

What is the narrator trying to imply eh?

"You like who you like lah. Who cares if someone likes the other someone because of their race? It's when they hate them. That's the problem."

I hope Lady Gaga doesn't see this bullshit in youtube , and worse still she's coming/already here on our shores. This is a result of the government censoring and interfering with everything they can get their hands on :), creativity being squashed by their lightning grip.

I'll have Lady Gaga produce/direct/choreograph the musical numbers of our NDP any time if this is what we are going to get for future NDPs.

The Sylvia Ratonel song is not as nice as last year's one by Corrinne May, and Brian Gothong Tan's MV theme of a man growing up with the nation is just so hackneyed.

But it was great to see Sharon Au in the MV.

Don't forget Lim Swee Say's hit single 'Upturn the Downturn'!

Oh gawd, yes...*gag*

As an aside, why the hell is the NDP still around anyway? Same shite, different year.

National songs and any contrived efforts to promote this (imho,) false sense of so-called patriotism is cringeworthy and eye-ball gougingly bad. Cant we just be happy that the country has like been independent for ohsomany years and not resort to blatant money-burning displays of fluffy nationalism?

Enough already! Will stop now. Am getting miffed.

Singapore's Fun Pack Song 'may have flouted copyright laws'

ORGANISERS of this year's Singapore National Day Parade (NDP) may have flouted copyright laws after they modified the lyrics of a Lady Gaga hit to create a song about its goodie bag, said lawyers yesterday.

The Fun Pack Song rips off Lady Gaga's Bad Romance by using the tune but substituting lyrics that celebrate the items inside the pack such as Newater, biscuits and sweets.

Mr Lam Chung Nian, an intellectual property lawyer, pointed out that the song has a few lines that duplicate the lyrics of Bad Romance.

If the lyrics of the NDP version were completely different, issues of infringement would have been less clear, said Mr Lam, a partner at a local law firm.

'In this case, they reproduced a couple of lines that remind people of and draw attention to the original lyrics,' he added.

For instance, the lyrics 'you know that I want you, and you know that I need you' appear in both Bad Romance and the Fun Pack Song.

The song was first performed at last Saturday's rehearsal of the parade at the floating platform in Marina Bay.

There were plans to repeat it during rehearsals and on National Day on Aug 9.

On Tuesday, the organisers had acknowledged that while they had permission to publicly perform Bad Romance, this did not include the go-ahead to modify the lyrics.

Yesterday, they confirmed that they have shelved plans to perform the song until they get the go-ahead from music publishing firm Sony/ATV Music Publishing, which owns the rights to the score and lyrics, as well as Lady Gaga's record label, Interscope, which is represented by Universal Music here.

Colonel Ong Tze-Ch'in, chairman of the NDP show segment, reiterated at a media briefing that his team is working to 'secure the rights to modify the lyrics'.

Declining to give details of the negotiations with the other parties, he said: 'They have not gotten back to us yet.'

Mr Lam said that in hammering out a deal, one of the key issues would likely be the popularity of Bad Romance.

'Typically, the more iconic and popular a song, then more licence fees may have to be paid out,' he added.

Bad Romance, from Lady Gaga's second album, was a worldwide hit.

Mr Lam declined to specify an amount, though The Straits Times understands that it can go up to tens of thousands of dollars.

Meanwhile, the YouTube video of the Fun Pack Song has garnered more than 87,000 views, with more than 200 likes and 5,000 dislikes.

The ditty's lyricist, Mr Haresh Sharma, who scripted the NDP musical and three other songs, said he stands by his work.

'It's a tongue-in-cheek parody... I believe it's still fun and still works,' he said.

He added: 'It's a song meant only to introduce items in the fun pack, nothing more, nothing less.'

Lady Gaga is in Singapore to perform in an exclusive showcase for SingTel customers today. Her representatives could not be reached for comment yesterday.

I can't believe they actually went ahead with it without securing the reproduction rights to change its lyrics of the song. Public Performance Right is an entirely different matter from the right to modify the lyrics of a song. This itself is a major infringement and I certainly hope the project gets shelved :P

Crap! Why do they still wanna pursue it?!

And tens of thousands of dollars too!

With oledi over 5000 dislikes vs that mere 200 likes, what were the organizers thinking?!

It is better not to do anything than trying to do something. Copying other people song with our own creative lyric is a total disrepect for others. The other time, they copied Japan advertisement and remake it into Singapore version. So lame and so sad. I do not know when we are going to truly have our own song - something with the "wow" factor and not too dicky lee tone.

people copy everybody. who is original? is GAGA that original? GAGA obviously copied styles of Madonna, Blondie and Bruce springtein. her MVs has much influence from michael jackson and madonna. eve GAGA's mega smash Born This Way is so Madonna's Express Yourself. when Pop superstar Beynonce performed at Billboard Awards, her stage performance is a total copycat of a french artist. its good that singapore NDP can be 100% original, but do you have the budget and time?

the funpack song is just an injection of something corny to the event. i think its an attempt to make a mockory to the valued of the funpack which is adored by many people for some lame reason. look at the comments posted here? there are even racist comments. and its just tame compared to what other sites have which basically call for the fall of the govt. should singaporeans not really lossen up and not be so uptight over a silly song?

and also please know that there are many many singaporeans who are not as artistically inclined as so many artistic singaporeans who blast the fun pack song.

originality? look at this year art's fest! many wonderfull original performances but attendance so low why? becos singaporeans always think CATS or anything by Andrew webber as ART and rest as boring. lol.

Well, I guess ppl have gotten used to watching and hearing very original local-made stuff being portrayed and displayed during the parade. At least it gives more the home feeling.

I know, some ppl may say Singapore is a globalized cosmopolitan city, but then the familarity of home still needs to be counted. Am I rambling?

are singaporeans ORIGINAL? look at the way we dress? girls and women always wear short shorts, flip flops and tight tiny tank tops to orchard road, guys, skinny berms and t shirt and flip flops. now this fun pack fiasco will overshodow everything else. this makes all the hard work by thousands under blazing hot sun account for nothing. very sad that singaporeans are not yet over this. it seams like singaporeans still have GE2011 fever.

anyway, singaporeans love to complaint abt everything and anything under the sun.

Isn't that a common fashion sense across any part of the world that does not subscribe wholly to theological ideals? Singapore has its own undisputed identity, that certainly can't be denied, I mean, other than fashion..... :B)
