Brit Pop Rules! (But Sucks Sometimes Too!)

Recommended Posts

Back in the mid-80's, for every Nik Kershaw fan, there's a Howard Jones one ,

and some may remember Howard and Nik's infamous popstar rivalry back then!

Great friends now and here're the 2 of them performing 'Wouldn't It Be Good' filmed at London's Indig02 arena in 2008,

taken from the Howard Jones 25th Anniversary DVD...

Here's Howard Jones' debut single that shot him to stardom back in 1983, reaching #3...

Remember The Dream Academy, the "dream pop" group from the UK of the mid-80's?

Life in A Northern Town - reaching #15 in the UK and a much bigger hit in the US at #7

Same song sampled by the UK Dance Music trio, Dario G in 1997...

Sunchyme - peaked at #2, only stopped by Elton John's tribute to Princess Diana

Remember The Dream Academy, the "dream pop" group from the UK of the mid-80's?

These are their 2 lesser-known singles and they are my favourites too. :)

The Love Parade - greater success again Stateside making #36 there,

but only reached #68 in the UK...

Love - a remake of the song written and performed by the late John Lennon,

this version failed to chart though...

love the songs of Halo James! Thanks for sharing, great sense of nostalgia!!! :)

You are most welcome Footy_chap.

Sadly Halo James disbanded after releasing just one album due to disputes over musical direction among themselves.

Here's one more for you, their debut single, Wanted reaching #45 in 1989...

My favourite contestant Johnny Robinson covering Madonna & Dead or Alive mashed-up...

Here's the plastic surgery aficionado, Pete Burns collaborating with the Stock Aitken Waterman production trio,

Here's Cher Lloyd's follow-up to her debut #1,

let's see how this fare and if she's a one-hit wonder after all!

Based on mid-week sales,

looks like she's on her way to notch a 2nd #1 single afterall!

All thanks to her performance on the UK X Factor over the weekend...

No such luck for Cher Llyod afterall with Professor Green holding firm,

Rihanna climbing back up and Labrinth slipping just a notch...

#1 Read All About It Feat. Emeli Sande - Professor Green

#2 We Found Love Feat. Calvin Harris - Rihanna

#3 Earthquake Feat. Tinie Tempah - Labrinth

#4 With Ur Love Feat. Mike Posner - Cher Lloyd

Siouxsie Sioux anybody?

Siouxsie and the Banshees ,

cited as "one of the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of the post-punk era".

Here's Peek-A-Boo of 1988 (my favourite too),

reaching #16 in the UK Singles Charts...

Internationally, they are better known for their contribution to the Batman Returns soundtrack,

here's Face To Face of 1992, peaked at #21...

Siouxie Sioux, me loves...but god, I could never spell or pronounce her name right.

Speaking of X Factor, I did not like Johnny Robinson's performance.. camp-style gets boring eventually. I really liked his devil called love performance though.

Craig Colton on the other hand is ON FIRE. :)

I think it's simply "Suzie Sue" if I didn't remember wrongly. :)

With Frankie Cocozza being asked to leave the X Factor for his bad behaviour,

I do hope that Johnny Robinson will be given a second chance!

I'll fume & flip if The Risk is back and not Johnny!!!

The Power of UK X Factor strikes again!

After JLS performed last weekend,

based on mid-week sales,

they look set to debut their new single at #1 this weekend!

Take A Chance On Me - no, this is not an ABBA remake

Btw IMHO & don't kill me for this,

I think they are the Fugliest boy band alive (for the 3 out of the 4 boys at least)!

Here's Bronski Beat (Mark II) without Mr Potato-Head, Jimmy Somerville

Hit That Perfect Beat - reaching #3 in November 1985 with John Foster as Somerville's replacement

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pwsk9kPKYg0

Meanwhiie, Mr Potato-Head himself went on to form The Communards with classically-trained musician Richard Coles.

Don't Leave Me This Way - their only #1 hit and became the UK's biggest selling single of 1986 too!

The history of Mr Potato-Head continues...

After achieving some considerable success in the 80s with the pop groups Bronski Beat and The Communards,

the openly gay Jimmy Somerville embarked on a successful solo career.

Read My Lips (Enough Is Enough) - a song about gay rights reaching #26 in 1989

To Love Somebody - a cover of the Bee Gees song peaked at #8 in 1991

A remake of Massive Attack's Teardrop is this year's Official BBC Children in Need single.

Collective is the group responsible, and they made up of Tinchy Stryder, Chipmunk, Ms. Dynamite, Ed Sheeran, Gary Barlow, Tulisa Wretch 32, Rizzle Kicks, MZ Bratt, Dot Rotten and Labrinth.

Do you like their version, or prefer the original?

Craig Colton was awesome again on X Factor last week. Also, did anyone catch Gaga's performance of marry the night? Stunning.

I did watch the Live Show,

but I couldn't recall what Craig sang actually until I went to The XFactorUK's Channel on Youtube!

I was more impressed with Amelia Lily come back though,

she's a breath of fresh air perhaps?

Amelia could be a contender now in view of Misha B being in the bottom 2 again!

Alrightie, Jason Donovan is an Australian,

but his musical contribution was largely for the UK masses being a heartthrob with Kylie Mingonue back in the late 80s.,

+ his days with the production trio Stock Aitken Waterman.

Anyway, I still buy CD these days and this is one of the recent ones I've purchased,

not because of Jason Donovan, but because of the collection of the 80s tunes...

  1. Everybody Wants To Rule The World
  2. Don't Leave Me This Way
  3. (I Just) Died In Your Arms
  4. Sign Your Name
  5. Broken Wings
  6. Only You
  7. Mary's Prayer

  8. Drive
  9. Love Changes
  10. Right Here Waiting
  11. What Is Love?
  12. Innocence
  13. Talk You Down
  14. Goodnight Baby

Jason Donovan can actually sing (anybody saw him on stage for the musical production of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert?)

& of course, no prizes for guessing which one is my favourite track from this collection too. :)

Do you guys still buy CDs? And any fellow 80s fans out there?

Yes, they've made it, a mid-week #1 for One Direction, at least for now,

but will they hold off competition from the likes of Rihanna (again) & Flo Rida,

remains to be seen...

Anyway, here's the mid-week Top 5...

#1 Gotta Be You - One Direction

#2 We Found Love Feat. Calvin Harris - Rihanna

#3 Good Feeling - Flo Rida

#4 Earthquake Feat. Tinie Tempah - Labrinth

#5 Lego House - Ed Sheeran

I love Brit TV Ad jingles too! :)

Here's another one climbing up the UK Singles Chart currently,

it's Slow Moving Millie (aka Amelia Warner) with her cover of The SmithsPlease Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,

thanks to its use in this year’s John Lewis Christmas TV campaign...

Always Remember To Respect And Honour Your Mother Part One - Dusted

Back in 2001, two record producers, Rollo Armstrong (Faithless, and brother of the singer Dido) and Mark Bates collaborated and this was their best remembered track reaching #31 on the UK Singles Chart, featuring a 12-year old schoolboy.

It's about time for some UK Christmas tunes!

First up, The Wombles, who are set to go head-to-head with the X Factor in the race for this year’s Official Christmas Number 1 single,

catch the lookalikes of Simon Cowell and Jedward for what they’re dubbing The W Factor.

Wombling Merry Christmas - The Wombles
