derryfawne
Any love for KT Tunstall? The debut album of KT Tunstall (of Scottish origin, but her music is targeted at the Brit market) was such a great record... I'm still wondering why she abandoned her distinctive folksy sound for a more generic indie-rock posturing in her subsequent albums. Still, Eye to the Telescope is almost single-handedly responsible for paving the way for those folk ladies with pop sensibilities like Ingrid Michaelson and Corrine Bailey Rae.Her percussion-heavy works (i.e. Black Horse and the Cherry Tree, Suddenly I See) are obviously her best, but I was Youtubing some of her early singles and realized just how heartfelt and touching Other Side of the World is. The way she went from a calm introspective "you're close enough to see that..." to the heartbreaking falsetto of "you're the other side of the world to me" is goosebumps-worthy. And the underrated Ingrid Michaelson, for that matter: “Do not take life too seriously. You’ll never get out of it alive.” — Elbert Hubbard

Tony Mortimer won an Ivor Novello songwriting award for this song, and the single was also nominated for 'Best Single' at the Brit Awards in 1995.The Christmas bells towards the end of the song gave the song a Christmassy feel, where it remained #1 for 5 weeks, thus becoming the 1994 Christmas number-one!
