Stop the Cavalry - Jona Lewie (#3 in 1980)

This song was never intended as a Christmas hit, and that it was a protest song.

However, the line 'Wish I was at home for Christmas' as well as the brass band arrangements made it an appropriately styled song to play around Christmas time.

Do you recall the success of Barbie Girl brought about other silly Euro tunes that were big in the UK, like this one here from Denmark? Cartoons - Witch Doctor

Hmmm, if you didn't post here, I'd have forgotten about them. Listening to the song brings back memories...

I think youngsters like this one, there's some kind of mass dance appeal to it.

Ok here's a very very young Seal and Adamskil's Killer. It was a no. 1 hit in 1990. I like.

I also like George Michael's take on it.

December Song (I Dreamed of Christmas) - George Michael (#14 in 2009)

This track was first available for free on George Michael's official website between December 25-26, 2008.

When officially released in December 2009, physical copies of the song were sold out in one day,

forcing George Michael's record label to print new copies,

with many fans commenting on forums of their annoyance at not being able to buy a physical copy of the single,

possibly also giving the song a lower chart position than its true potential.

Ok here's a very very young Seal and Adamskil's Killer. It was a no. 1 hit in 1990. I like.

I also like George Michael's take on it.

Speaking of George Michael, he is currently on the road to recovery,

as he was being treated for pneumonia in Austria.

Meanwhile, he will be releasing the classic holiday EP, December Song (I Dreamed Of Christmas) tomorrow,

and this year's edition will be decked out in brand new redesigned artwork!

For the first time in the UK X Factor history,

a group has won and it's a girl group too!

Here's the single that has just been released ,

a sure #1 this weekend...

Cannonball - Little Mix

Their version is definitely better than

',

but is it any better than the original by the Irish singer-songwriter, Damien Rice?

There’s still a little bit of your taste in my mouth

There’s still a little bit of you laced with my doubt

It’s still a little hard to say what's going on

There’s still a little bit of your ghost your witness

There’s still a little bit of your face i haven't kissed

You step a little closer each day

That I can´t say what´s going on

Stones taught me to fly

Love, it taught me to lie

Life, it taught me to die

So it's not hard to fall

When you float like a cannonball

There’s still a little bit of your song in my ear

There’s still a little bit of your words i long to hear

You step a little closer to me

So close that I can´t see what´s going on

Stones taught me to fly

Love taught me to lie

Life taught me to die

So its not hard to fall

When you float like a cannon.

Stones taught me to fly

Love, it taught me to cry

So come on courage, teach me to be shy

'Cause its not hard to fall,

And I don't want to scare her

Its not hard to fall

And i don't want to lose

Its not hard to grow

When you know that you just don't know

Following the massive success of Killer,

Adamski's follow-up was a #7 hit without Seal,

shades of Elvis Presley there, but a much lesser known single...

No prizes for guessing who's #1 in the UK Singles Chart this week!

Shifting over 210,000 copies in its first week,

Cannonball outsold the rest of this week’s Official Singles Chart Top 5 combined.

#1 (new)

#2 (climber) Paradise - Coldplay

#3 (faller) Dance With Me Tonight - Olly Murs

#4 (faller) Dedication To My Ex (Miss That) Feat. Andre 3000 & Lil Wayne - Lloyd

In the United Kingdom, Christmas number ones are singles that are top of the UK Singles Chart in the week in which Christmas Day falls.

Musicians and pressure groups view having a Christmas number one as being especially prestigious, more so than any other time of year.

Many of the Christmas number ones were also the best-selling song of the year.

Military_wives_wherever_you_are_%282011%29.jpg

This year with the UK X Factor winner not releasing their single on this week, the week before Christmas,

the single by the Military Wives Choir with Gareth Malone, is all set to claim the Christmas #1.

Already #1 in the UK iTunes Single chart,

and having broken sales records in becoming the most pre-ordered music item ever on the UK Amazon website,

let's see if it could fight off competition from the likes of The Nirvana(?!!!) amongst others...

Remember Halo James?

Was just randomly flipping through threads and then ... HALO JAMES!

Actually, I was never really into them. But the "2000 AD" storyline they got their name from is legendary. Penned of course by Alan Moore (I kiss your feet, great one).

Here's another version of Wham!'s Christmas classic,

released this week by the casts of The Only Way Is Essex,

it's also a charity record too in their bid to raise funds for various charity organisations...

Last Christmas - The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE)

Released on a double A-side with Everything She Wants,

the single sold well over a million copies and became the biggest selling single in UK chart history not to reach #1,

stopped by Band Aid, of course.

, winner of 2009 UK X Factor,

taken from his 3rd & latest album, 'Classic Christmas’...

OK, I'll give it a shot,

how about this one?

Barber's Adagio For Strings - William Orbit

Nice one: hee hee, it takes the Brits can pull off s**t like this. There's also the not-very-good "Roll Over Beethoven" by ELO, and two much better pieces by the late-but-great former manager of the Sex Pistols, Malcolm McLaren. There're other McLaren attempts but they kinda suck IMHO.

The UK Singles Chart just gets weirder as Christmas is drawing closer!

Out of nowhere, new at #2 on the iTunes chart currently (and thanks to Chris Moyles too),

comes a 40-year-old children song about a donkey who helps Santa Claus bring presents to children in Italy!

Dominick The Donkey (The Italian Christmas Song) - Lou Monte

So will it be 4 nubile girls, a bunch of housewives or an ass for Christmas #1 this weekend?

Paul McCartney's first and only UK #1 as a solo artist.

Pipes Of Peace - Paul McCartney (#1 in 1983)

The video depicts the famous 1914 Christmas truce between British and German troops.

It portrays a British and a German soldier, both played by McCartney,

who meet up in No Man's Land and exchange photos of their loved ones while other soldiers fraternise and play football.

When a shell blast forces the two armies to retreat to their own trenches both men realise that they still have each-other's pictures...

Siouxsie and the Banshees ,

cited as "one of the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of the post-punk era".

Face to Face is so not them, despite it being the track most people know them for. It was written by Danny Elfman, who also composed the rest of the Batman score, and was to Siouxsie and the Banshees what Take My Breath Away was to Berlin.

I'm surprised you left out Hong Kong Garden...

Love Like Blood - Killing Joke

Remember this band?

This is their one & only hit, reaching #16 in 1985.

This one's for you Mercutio. ;)

I was seriously confused for a while, because I've never heard of them.

250px-Killingjoke.JPG2714652863_def66b9a6d.jpg

That was one severely disturbing comic ... I remember thinking "Shit, I'm just a kid, should I be reading this?"

And by then I had already read The Exorcist, wherein I encountered my first instance of the word 'fellatio' and was confused when I checked up its meaning in the dictionary. Whatever did it mean by "oral stimulation of the male genitalia"? Of course more research was demanded thereafter, I was 11. Almost.
