Brit Pop Rules! (But Sucks Sometimes Too!)

Recommended Posts

I know Seal is British right? AKA Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel (born 19 February 1963 in Paddington, London,England). He's awesome too back in his heydays! Though these days he ain't producing much good stuff. Here are my faves Prayer For The Dying and Newborn Friend.

Killer Feat. Seal by Adamski - the song that launched Seal's career back in 1990.

Deconstruction Records is a UK record label that's responsible for quite many dance acts back in the 90s.

Here's one of them, M People...

Moving on Up - their biggest hit reaching #2 in 1993

One Night In Heaven - another club favourite, taken from the album Elegant Slumming

Before Jedward, there's this pair of twins, Matt Goss and Luke Goss,

aka Bros (+ the other one they called Ken who's actual name is Craig Logan).

When Will I Be Famous - their second single that propelled them to fame

I Owe You Nothing - reached #80 on first release, subsequently a #1 hit on re-issue

Matt Goss is currently on his three year contract with Caesars Palace, Vegas.

PS: I think Deconstruction produced one of Kylie's album no? I think it was the amazing Confide In Me album.

Only to lie like this between the bombs, dreaming away and not alone, because time was very short.

Yes it is, her 5th album too,

check out PaterTenebrarum's post below...

I know Kylie is Aussie but she is uber popular in UK and used to be all over Smash Hits magazine. Two songs from her excellent and under-appreciated eponymous 5th album. The last Ms Minogue album I bought was Light Years.

Here's the top 3 of the mid-week UK Singles chart once again,

as we see yet another new entry crashing in to the top spot...

#3 Heart Skips A Beat Feat. Rizzle Kicks - Olly Murs

#2

#1 Example Stay Awake - Example

Here's this week's UK Top 3 singles...

#1 Example Stay Awake - Example

#2 Moves Like Jagger Feat. Christina Aguilera - Maroon 5

#3 Heart Skips A Beat Feat. Rizzle Kicks - Olly Murs

Surprise, surprise that Maroon 5 & Christina Aguilera are heading up the right direction.

If it reaches #1 next week,

I'll make an exception and feature the MTV here even though they are Americanos,

or should I not and stick with the subject header?

Argh!!!! Agadoo! No! No!

Oh gawd. Then, there's the Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh and Bob the Builder's Can we Fix It.

The Brits can be a bizarre bunch.

Anybody remember M|A|R|R|S & Pump Up The Volume back in 1987?

More one hit wonders,

Living Doll - actors from The Young Ones TV series teamed up with Cliff Richard for a spoof version of Cliff's 1959 hit

Hole In My Shoe - Neil, (or actor Nigel Planer) from the same TV series & his only solo hit in 1984

One hit wonders continue with more bizarre inspirations & acts...

You should. Terrific musicianship.

Best starting point is Stories from the City, her most accessible record; her masterpiece though, imo, is Is This Desire?

The video below is Dress from her debut album (Dry), which I love to blast full-volume with my headphone on. Really tight and bombast rhythm section, and PJ Harvey's aggressive delivery nails it (although she would get even more aggressive on the next album, Rid of Me, but I find that album a bit too rough).

Most of PJ Harvey's outputs are full-blown macho rock.

She has released two non-rock records: White Chalk and Let England Shake. Both are good albums, especially the latter, but I don't think they are representative of PJ Harvey's classic sound. Had I listen to some other PJ songs right after a song from those two albums, I wouldn't even be able to recognize that it's the same singer. Nevertheless, The Last Living Rose is my personal recommendation if you want to start from her quieter songs.

If you want to get acquainted to her rock sound, Stories from the City is still the best place to start. Catchy, glossy, pop-rock tunes.

Adele loses out to PJ Harvey in this year's Mercury Prize with the album Let England Shake!

PJ Harvey was the first woman to win the Mercury as a solo artist for Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea.

Ten years later, a second win makes her the first artist to take the award twice, and serves as confirmation,

if it were needed, that she remains one of the most thrilling and relevant musicians working today!

Quite true.

Adele's commercial impact is huge, and is fairly well-received among critics, making her a top contender; however

PJ Harvey's Let England Shake is pretty much the most critically-acclaimed album of the year.

If we're talking about relatively young acts who began their careers in the last 20 years,

there are very few names that rival her significance in the music industry: Radiohead, Beck, Blur, and Bjork.

Homoerotic videos from the UK...

Being Boring - Pet Shop Boys

Relax - F.G.T.H.

Fancy any of the bums from the boys of Take That?

Do What U Like - This low-budget music video featured the band getting naked and smearing jelly over themselves and it was banned from daytime television too!

Now, who's your favourite Take That member?

For me, all of them!!! LOL

whereas Maroon 5 & Christina Aguilera held on to the #2 spot.

#1 All About Tonight - Pixie Lott

#2 Moves Like Jagger Feat. Christina Aguilera - Maroon 5

#3 All Fired Up - The Saturdays

Any Pixie Lott fans here?

All About Tonight - new single released digitally on 4 September 2011, taken from her as-yet-untitled second studio album

Unfortunately though for Leona Lewis & Avicii,

their new single Collide only made it to #4 on debut...

Snow Patrol is back in the UK singles chart this week...

Called Out In The Dark - debut at #11, the first single from the band's upcoming sixth studio album, Fallen Empires.

But nothing beats this one,

a tough act to follow indeed...

Chasing Cars - As of 25 August 2011, the single has spent 106 weeks on the official UK Top 75 Singles Chart and 150 on the Top 100 and has sold 505,000 copies in the UK, despite missing the Top 5.

This is my favourite performance of that song in the Brit Awards 2007, amongst a forest of floating light bulbs...

British hip hop singer and rapper Ms Dynamite is back with her new single, Neva Soft,

debut this week at #33 in the UK Singles Chart...

It's been almost 10 years since her most successful single, Dy-na-mi-tee,

Came across this song by chance after so many years.

The Assembly (the ever versatile Vince Clarke with Eric Radcliffe and Feargal Sharkey) with their one and only hit 'Never Never'.

Feargal Sharkey's solo singles were just as good too...

Listen To Your Father - Debut solo single, reaching #23 in 1984

A Good Heart - Biggest solo hit to date, reached #1 for 2 weeks in 1985

They are tipped to be #1 this weekend,

for now they are the mid-week chart topper,

followed closely by...

#2 Moves Like Jagger Feat. Christina Aguilera - Maroon 5

#3 All About Tonight - Pixie Lott

Once again, Maroon 5 has to contend themselves for spending yet another week on the runner-up spot.
