Brit Pop Rules! (But Sucks Sometimes Too!)

Recommended Posts

Something nonsensical and light-hearted for a change,

here's the talented English Comedian, Peter Kay...

This man can do no wrong and I love him as Geraldine to bits!!!

More of Geraldine McQueen, I mean Peter Kay,

this time teaming up with Subo...

And here's the original...

I Know Him So Well - Barbara Dickson & Elaine Paige

Can’t Get You Out Of My Head turns 10

Ten years ago this week, Kylie Minogue was at the top of The Official Singles Chart with Can’t Get You Out Of My Head.

The song, released on September 17, 2001, was written and produced by Cathy Dennis (a hugely successful solo artist in her own right and a talented songwriter who has penned tracks for Will Young, Britney Spears and Katy Perry, to name but a few) and former Mud guitarist and Grammy Award winner, Rob Davis, shifted over 300,000 physical copies in its first week on sale, and topped the charts for four consecutive weeks.

Here's Johnny Robinson's rendition of the song performed on the UK X Factor last night...

"You can rub my lamp anytime"... lol that guy is hilarious.

I really like Craig Colton though. Cute, charming...and mad chops. That guy's got everything going for him.

It's all about the Americans in the top 3 in the mid-week UK Singles Chart...

#1 We Found Love Feat. Calvin Harris - Rihanna

#2 Moves Like Jagger Feat. Christina Aguilera - Maroon 5

#3 Jar Of Hearts - Christina Perri

Sadly Matt Cardle only made it to #5 based on mid-week sales with Run For Your Life.

Sadly, the Americans have dominated all of the top 5 in the UK Singles Chart this week!!!

#1 We Found Love Feat. Calvin Harris - Rihanna

#2 Moves Like Jagger Feat. Christina Aguilera - Maroon 5

#3 Stereo Hearts Feat. Adam Levine- Gym Class Heroes

#4 Jar Of Hearts - Christina Perri

#5 Sexy And I Know It - LMFAO

Thanks to Craig Colton, Christina Perri’s Jar Of Hearts which peaked at Number 4 some nine weeks ago,

re-enters the Top 10 at Number 4, up from last week’s 12,

after he performed it on the first Live Show 2 Saturdays ago...

They are now leading the Mid-week singles Chart,

looks like this will be their 3rd #1 single following the footsteps of All Time Low & Glad You Came!

The Wanted is back next Monday with their third release from the band's forthcoming second studio album Battleground.

Lightning - The Wanted

Another #1 in the making?

20-year-old Ed Sheeran is the name to watch out for in the UK music scene.

Following the huge success of his debut single The A Team that reached #3 in June this year...

...comes another single, Lego House taken from his debut #1 album "+".

Here's the video featuring Harry Potter star Rupert Grint...

Will this be his first ever #1 single?

Here's this week's Top 3 UK Singles...

#3 Wherever You Will Go - Charlene Soraia

Here's a song that's been used in a Twinings tea advert in the UK recently,

first made popular by the band The Calling back in 2001.

Here's Charlene Soraia's version, debut at #20 this week...

#2 Lightning - The Wanted

They are now leading the Mid-week singles Chart,

looks like this will be their 3rd #1 single following the footsteps of All Time Low & Glad You Came!

Staying put at #1 for the 3rd week running is Rihanna's We Found Love Feat. Calvin Harris.

That means The Wanted has been deprived of their 3rd #1 single! Ouch!

who's now concentrating on her acting career....

Here's a rap duo from Brighton, Rizzle Kicks,

unlike those typical hardcore hip-hop artistes from the States though...

Down with the Trumpets - last single that reached the UK Singles chart @ #8 back in June

After Rihanna's reign at the summit for the past 3 weeks,

looks like a #1 is in order this weekend based on mid-week sales thus far...

Read All About It Feat. Emeli Sandé - Professor Green

Shades of Eminem in the track isn't it?

Emeli Sandé was last seen in the charts on her own with Heaven reaching #2 back in August.

Simon Cowell called her "his favourite songwriter at the minute",

for she has written for a number of artists,

including Alesha Dixon, Cher Lloyd, Susan Boyle, Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole and Tinie Tempah.

Here's Alesha Dixon's Radio which Emeli Sandé co-wrote...

Speaking of Alesha Dixon, she was formerly from the R&B trio Mis-Teeq,

separated in 2005 and now pursuing her music career as a solo artist.

Scandalous (Mis-Teeq) - one of their biggest hit then, reaching #2 back in 2003

Drummer Boy (Alesha) - released September last year, reached #15

The English indie pop band is back!

Will it be as successful as their #1 hit of 2008?

That's Not My Name - The Ting Tings

Personally I love their not as well-known songs more. "Be The One", "Keep Your Head" are pure gold.

Florence + The Machine's new album Ceremonials drops tomorrow!!

Btw, is it just me or doesn't Florence + the Machiines' Shake it Out song sound very Annie Lennox-ish?

Dont get me wrong. I like them both.

I have to agree with you Pater,

it's especially evident in the Ceremonials album!

However Annie Lennox's voice sounds forceful, "raspier" or even "more masculine" than Florence Welch,

do you reckon the same?

Here's one for you Pater...

Annddd....here is one of the most popular songs from the 90s, from Welsh singer, Donna Lewis. This song is terrible, imho!

LOL

I actually kinda like it when it was released,

it's catchy and vocally, reminded me of Cyndi Lauper too!

Onto another Welsh singer or more like a band from Wales,

anybody into Catatonia & Cerys Matthews?

Here're 2 of my favourites...

Mulder and Scully (Catatonia) - biggest hit of theirs reaching #3 in 1998

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m5vD4Fojl4

Karaoke Queen (Catatonia) - scraped to #36 in 1999

Anybody into the Liverpool band of the mid 90's, Space?

Remember these lyrics?

In number 69 there lives a transvestite
He's a man by day, but he's a woman at night
There's a man in number 4 who swears
He's Saddam Hussein
Says he's on a chore to start the
Third world war

Neighbourhood - originally released on March 25, 1996 and peaked at #56 in the UK Singles Charts,

but it later re-released on October 21 that year, this time managing to peak at #11

Female Of The Species - released as their fourth single, and second single proper from their debut album Spiders on May 27, 1996,

reaching #14 in the UK Singles Charts

Here's Cher Lloyd's follow-up to her debut #1,

let's see how this fare and if she's a one-hit wonder after all!

With Ur Love - Cher Lloyd

I was quite disappointed with Cher Lloyd's singles, they're pretty much candy floss.

I'd love to hear her stripped- get rid of the dirty beats, the vocal wizardry...and just belt out a nice ballad or two. Like how she did with stay and everytime on X factor.

Based on mid-week sales,

looks like she's on her way to notch a 2nd #1 single afterall!

All thanks to her performance on the UK X Factor over the weekend...

Yesterday I chanced upon this song by Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin that topped the UK Singles Charts back in 1981,

a remake version of It's My Party, most famously sung by American singer Lesley Gore in 1963.

It's My Party - Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin

This haunting version stayed on top for four weeks and was also the first version of the song to reach #1 in the UK,

and btw this Dave Stewart is not the David A. Stewart, founder of the Eurythmics too.

Love it or trash it? That's Brit Pop!

I didn't know Amy Winehouse covered this song on Quincy Jones' album "Q: Soul Bossa Nostra" too...

...if only it's included in her coming posthumous one as well.
