What's The Best Job In The World?

Which job has good pay, work-life balance, provides a secure and comfortable life, has high social status and is well respected? Does such a job actually exist? What in your opinion is the best job in the world?

Does being the Dalai Lama qualify as a job? I think it is the best. I am not buddhist, but here goes:

  • All the money you could want (I doubt if the Dalai Lama would it in the first place),
  • All the comforts he could want (I think he has pretty simple demands on comfort),
  • Extremely high social status (how higher could you be than an ascended soul who chooses to remain on earth to serve humanity?)
  • Perhaps the most respected man in the world (except by the Chinese government, but only because he represents a threat of Tibetan independence)

Be careful what you wish for - my ex-classmate from secondary school is now a CEO with his own company - he has a few cars, his own house with a pool yet he works harder than anyone else in his company - he works 7 days a week, 12 hours a day on average because his business is everything to him and I look at him like, woah, respect for the pool and the flashy cars man, but can you relax for an evening so us old friends can just sit down and chill over a teh-si and catch up? The last time I caught up with him, he was on the run, putting together this amazing project and I was fascinated to see him in action but we only really talked when we were in his car, stuck in traffic! Aiyoh ... so please don't imagine that being a big boss = loads of free time.

well, here are some of my thoughts on the most suitable job according to your specifications.

Church preacher, Pastor, or any other religious leader positions , doesn't have to be restricted to christian ones. Its life fulfilling, well respected and comfortable cause you are at peace with yourself and you've found meaning in your life. Good pay too, but its all up to you, as most of the religious leaders choose to donate to charity.

Art teacher, they are respected as its not a very common teaching aspect. Students look up to you as you help them along with their imagination and dreams in creating art. Good pay too, skill is needed to take care of a large number of students. Your colleagues also look up to you to do designs and you will gain respect from them.

hmm ill think of more

The best job defers from person to person.

Not everyone looks to have lots of money from the job they do, some may be doing it for charity. e.g. Volunteers in Churches/temples, etc.

Not everyone looks for respect when they carry out their work, some just feel that it's their calling, e.g. Firefighters, teachers, etc.

Not everyone looks for cushy job, some slog under the sun. e.g. Life guard, Swimming coach, etc.

And so on and so on...

Here is someone whom had the best job in the world.

A permaculture gardener:

- once the garden/farm achieves equilibrium, your work life automatically balances. In fact, it begins to feel more like play than work. Most days, you don't even have to work.

- the more offgrid you get, the richer you become, ie, having to spend correspondingly less and less. Gross income becomes very close to nett. Also, eating and living well mean a high independence from costly medication and medical services - another lack of expenditure. Not only will you be very sound financially but in body, mind and spirit as well. This is true wealth.

- food, water and energy security without resorting to rat race behaviour is IMO, a high social status. You begin to attract people and many will ingratiate themselves to you because they want to be/feel included into your security. They also love your tasty produce and clean, peaceful and healthy environment.

I'm surprised that no one mentions being a ruling party politician in Singapore. Fits all the criteria stated: good pay, work-life balance, provides a secure and comfortable life, has high social status and is well respected.

Of course you've got to have what it takes to get the job - smart brains, good character, leadership qualities and willingness to serve. For the sake of our nation, only the best should qualify.

I completely agree with G_lucifer and GachiMuchi. I also agree with Clickclock on his last paragraph but with a different reason. First, let me respond to Guest, who wrote "Teacher lo . stable yet well respect"

Your video clip is superb. However, few teachers can talk like that. Try doing relief teaching in a neighbourhood school for a month. It will be an eye opener for you. I was a full-time teacher for 7 years 7 months before I quit the slavery system in 1991. It is now getting worse and worse. Many teachers would love to quit, were it not for the sake of their rice bowls to feed their families. An ideal job must fit your personality and teaching certainly does for me (in theory). However (in practice), teaching is NO longer teaching that it should be. Yes, stable income but wrong to say well-respected, especially nowadays parents support their children to unreasonably criticise teachers, turning many children into audacious brats.

Income is high but so is the stress level. If you are not prepared to do endless marking (endless even if you mark till 11 p.m. each night), admin chores and time-wasting meetings and thankless school functions, stressful chief invigilator's job, fund-raising including organising fun fairs, then don't take up teaching. In case you are not aware, no more REAL undisturbed holidays except for a week or two in December. By the way, teachers form a large part of the inmates at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), previously known as Woodbridge Hospital. I quit because I do not want to land up in there. Ha ha.

If you want to be a stress-free teacher (comparatively speaking only), then be a P.E. (Physical Education) or Art teacher. No, not because of respectability. Real reason: minimal or no marking workload. Compare marking a piece of drawing and a language composition (any language). How long will it take for you to mark a script properly? What if you have more than 3 language classes plus teaching different levels (and streams: Express vs Normal) plus other subjects? Each class with 40 students? And you must set papers for different subjects at different levels and streams - for class tests, mid-year exams, final term exams, etc.

Pardon me for my longwindedness. Here is a scenario: Suppose you are an Arts (not Art) teaching upper secondary level. Which classes would you prefer?

a) Sec 3 Express English

b) Sec 3 Normal English

c) Sec 3 Normal Tech English

d) Sec 4 Express English

e) Sec 4 Normal English

f) Sec 4 Normal Tech English

g) Sec 5 Normal English

h) Sec 3 Express History

i) Sec 3 Normal History

j) Sec 4 Express History

j) Sec 4 Normal History

k) Sec 3 Express Geography

l) Sec 3 Normal Geography

m) Sec 4 Express Geography

n) Sec 4 Normal Geography

o) Civics / Moral Education or Social Studies

Your school principal wants you to take up 5 different ones out of a total of a) to n), in addition to one class of o). You must also take up 2 CCAs (co-curricular activities) and you are made a form teacher (with additional responsibilites including attendance marking, report cards, confidential reports, leaving school certificates, testimonials, mark sheets x 40 each etc.) Would you agree? I am not complaining about this a) to o) scenario because this is part and parcel of teaching life. But please do not paint a glamorous picture of the teaching profession. 吃力不讨好。 The Minister of Education for the later half of 1980s is now our new President. What had he done? Has there been any REAL significant improvement for teachers' welfare till now? For those ex-colleagues of mine who can persevere against all odds till now, I salute them.

dont you think it is a bit over react? If this considered many, then I would say there are still many jobs work through 7/24 non stop.

If you think I am over-reacting, then it is up to you. Of course, there are other jobs worse than teaching - overworked and underpaid. Foreign workers, foreign domestic maids, etc ... the list can go on. I did not deny that. But this does not dismiss the advice that one should not view the teaching profession with rose-tinted glasses. What grounds do you have to say that teaching is the best job? If it really suits you well, then fine.

What I know is better keeping you away, if I am not mistaken, you also claimed that you had fun with quite huge number of guys. Now you turned to drama queen. You are sick...

I would think there is no such thing as the best job, but more of a job that one works with: passion.

As what G_lucifier has mentioned: a job that you would be enjoying. A salaried staff will enjoy certain perks and welfare yet may not necessarily be drawing higher wages while the boss himself maybe enjoying higher wages, yet no freedom of time... the list goes on.

We always view/think the greener pasture on the other side, which may not usually be the case.

Make the best of whatever you have. :)

Is teaching in Secondary School really stressful?

I was told the stress is only the first 3 years, when the teacher is serving his bond. During this period, I was told that he would be dumped with many projects to handle, but after this first 3 years, teaching will be a bliss in that you no longer handle major projects, plus with more experience gained, less time is spent in lesson preparation.

Is it true that it is only the classroom management aspect that contribute to the bulk of the stress? Meaning, if the teacher has problem with classroom management, he would find teaching very stressful.

Is it inflexible to take urgent or casual leave in teaching? For example, I must schedule my medical appointment during the school holidays, and would the school grant leave to a teacher to bring aged parents to see doctor?

As with any discussion revolving around the establishment of a definitive "best", the subjectivity of the concept "best" makes it a tedious discussion to conclude.

Everyone perceives "best" differently and more often than not, their perception is either a reflection of societal priorities or their personality.

Personally, I feel the best job in the world is one that doesn't confine you, allowing you to exercise flexibility in planning and execution. Furthermore I like to interact with people as well as help organizations adopt corporate responsibility so as to project, and subsequently shape, the more humane (or less mercenary) aspect of business.

But that's just me. Depending on each individual, the priority could centre around wealth, routine, social status, passion and so many other intangible factors.

In summary, the best job in the world is ideally one that you have a passion for. Simply put, passion leads to better work performance which in turn leads to prospects of career advancements. However, I speak from an idealist perspective since I'm still an undergraduate but yeah, that's my view ^_^

Everyone has opinions but whether they are justifiable is another issue.

I'm doing what I like to do, and I'm being paid by people to do it. But I also encounter a lot of idiots along the way... mostly in govt service (teachers, doctors, paper-pushers). I may not even as much as I would if I have stayed in my previous job, but I do get a good deal of freedom and time to pursue personal stuff. So, yep, I got my "dream" job. ..... which btw, isn't cut out for everyone. :D

Yep, you said it. Some people just need their asses kicked from time to time because if I don't do the dirty job, who will do it?

So if your asses are itching to be kicked or your holes needs a good screwing, just come to me, I will make sure your ass gets what it deserved. Comprende?

The best job in the world?

Being a pxxn actor, I think. Especially like that main actor who always wears swimming goggles in the Japanese pxxn production company under Coat.

I mean why not? After all you obtain three P stars in one goal.

You get to eat and feast on the Prime Beer ( the other pxxn actors) You get your Pleasure of out that.

Most of all, You get Paid quite well for all your efforts.

( Of course. Negotiate expensive tonic and good supplements supplied by that comapny for all your hard work as counted in your working hours and mintues and also per cum shot shot )

PS. one of my friend, a very well known personnel here, ever approached me a few times and discussed on settting up a Singapore firm based pxxn production but based in an overseas address ( for very obvious reasons)

Very entreprenuer I think. Any interested candidates?
