Why do I say immeasurable power? They not only direct institutions, they direct minds and hearts, more so than their political and commercial counterparts. One sermon and they can turn tens of thousands of Singaporeans vehemently against the gay population. And that kind of discrimination you wouldn't want to bear the brunt of, believe me, even if you don't seem to understand the power that church leaders hold. Some work behind the scenes to direct events and politicians, some throw their religious doctrine right in your face(the faces of their citizens). In fact, looking at history and events in this day and age, the power of religious leaders FAR OUTWEIGH that of political or commercial leaders, and they are often not mutually exclusive.
