Is Suckling Pig's Avatar Offensive, If So Why ?

Some of you may have read some posts objecting to my avatar of a baby pig suckling from its mother's teats. I do not like continuing the discussion in the Main Forum as the anonymity of the allowed "guest" posting encourages irresponsible posting and bitching. So I am beginning a discussion here instead.

For me, the objective is not so much the viability of the avatar. It is very easy for me to change. But rather what I hope to do is bring up points relating to:

• Tolerance of different viewpoints and tastes
  
• Online forum courtesy
  

Please let me have your honest, thought-out comments.

But if u look at it, suckling_pig’s profile name and avatar do not in any way derogate or associate any particular race or religion with the animal.

The Muslims will tell you that they are allowed by Him to consume pork under very dire circumstances when there are no other food alternatives available.

From where I come, Muslim officers from the Veterinary Department have had to handle pigs themselves during the mass culling due to the outbreak of the Japanese Encephalitis (JE), albeit with gloves. From where I come, there are also Muslims among the policemen who handle the canine unit.

I'm juz stating facts from my what I saw, heard and felt.

Naturally, most of my experiences are Malaysian-connected since I spent over 20 years there.

But if you wanna claim that I often hardsell Malaysian stuff, then I can randomly pick a Singaporean one.

I still remember a scene somewhere in Jack Neo's Just Follow Law 我在政府部门的日子 when a non-Muslim character passed out and people were crying for help as to who can provide CPR, a nearby Muslim character actually asked, "Is he halal onot?"

I can choose to contest that for being unnecessary, but then since it's humour, I tend to shrug it off.

If all of us wanna get uptight over such stuff, people would be protesting against images of breastfeeding women exposing half a breast, the usage of a devil in Manchester United's logo, and not to mention Abercrombie & Fitch Singapore's drooling advertisement board at Knightsbridge.

The internet is a virtual realm. The BW forum is not even a full-fledged news website.

This is where all of us have full freedom to express ourselves, albeit in a responsible manner, which we may not be able to do always in the real world with all its so-called 'norms'.

Why shud I even attempt to seek to fulfil everyone's tastes when I'm clearly aware that I do not conduct myself in a manner that tramples upon others' dignity, be it in terms of skin colour or religion or nationality?

Yes, qedcwc that is the way you and I feel. I think the sight of a mother breastfeeding her child is a beautiful thing. But then again not everybody agrees.

One important thing I thank BW for, is that I can see the wide variety of users here, and learnt a certain amount of tolerance. Even for those who want to show off how clever they are and put everybody else down. I think they are reading this and know who they are.

Actually tribal people in New Guinea raise pigs by feeding them from lactating human mothers. But pigs are very highly prized there, so I think they look upon the breast feeding with different eyes.

Also, Islam, Christianity and Judaism (the Abrahamic faiths) have the same roots. There is the same caution against representing living things in all three religions ("thou shalt have no graven images"). This is mostly ignored in Christianity, but in Islam it is more strictly adhered to. That is why you see alot of Islamic art and architectural decoration have geometric designs.

From the point of view from Sirius (or let's say Europe), this avatar is quite cute: it's something you show to your children when you are lucky enough for showing them a farm.

Too many kids, specially in Paris, grow up without seeing any cow, pig, sheep, rabbit nor horse.

Lots of natural things happen in farms; we are lucky to have a few ones still ^^

That being said, a sow can be quite dangerous sometimes, specially if you try to touch her piglets when they are drinking milk...

But once again, piglets are cute, and kids (or those who did not forget they were kids in the past) like watching them.

I really don't see the problem with this avatar.
