suckling_pig
Some of you may have read some posts objecting to my avatar of a baby pig suckling from its mother's teats. I do not like continuing the discussion in the Main Forum as the anonymity of the allowed "guest" posting encourages irresponsible posting and bitching. So I am beginning a discussion here instead. For me, the objective is not so much the viability of the avatar. It is very easy for me to change. But rather what I hope to do is bring up points relating to:Tolerance of different viewpoints and tastesOnline forum courtesyPlease let me have your honest, thought-out comments.SP Edited November 2, 2011 by suckling_pig Quote We see things not as they are, but as WE are - The TalmudWhen the student is ready, the teacher will appear - The Buddha
qedcwc
I personally find it quite NORMAL!Get real, if I were to use a picture of a human mother breastfeeding her toddler, would it be disgusting? On a personal note, scruff’s avatar of a savage-like ass hole with jaws is more intimidating to me.But then, who am I to stop him from doing so when it’s not causing me any physical harm?Just my two cents…. qedcwc
From where I come, Muslim officers from the Veterinary Department have had to handle pigs themselves during the mass culling due to the outbreak of the Japanese Encephalitis (JE), albeit with gloves. From where I come, there are also Muslims among the policemen who handle the canine unit.I can tell u one thing for sure: those who get sensitive all over it either do not understand the actual situation/knowledge fully or do it on purpose to segregate amongst each other. The late Yasmin Ahmad was Muslim, and yet several scenes of her films had a Malay-Muslim girl entering a Chinese kopitiam selling char siew rice to meet her Chinese boyfriend (in Sepet) and a muezzin (bilal) touching a dog (in Gubra). As the term ‘avatar’ already implies, it may not necessarily need to represent me, unless it’s an official job resume.I can also say that your current avatar sorta implies that you lord on everyone else to lick your arse. But then, I prefer to stay neutral on this. It represent your taste and choice. Why dont u change your avatar to a disgusting otter carcass and see how ppl react to u. And yes, my avatar... kiss my ass.I'm juz stating facts from my what I saw, heard and felt.Naturally, most of my experiences are Malaysian-connected since I spent over 20 years there. But if you wanna claim that I often hardsell Malaysian stuff, then I can randomly pick a Singaporean one.I still remember a scene somewhere in Jack Neo's Just Follow Law 我在政府部门的日子 when a non-Muslim character passed out and people were crying for help as to who can provide CPR, a nearby Muslim character actually asked, "Is he halal onot?"I can choose to contest that for being unnecessary, but then since it's humour, I tend to shrug it off.If all of us wanna get uptight over such stuff, people would be protesting against images of breastfeeding women exposing half a breast, the usage of a devil in Manchester United's logo, and not to mention Abercrombie & Fitch Singapore's drooling advertisement board at Knightsbridge. The internet is a virtual realm. The BW forum is not even a full-fledged news website. This is where all of us have full freedom to express ourselves, albeit in a responsible manner, which we may not be able to do always in the real world with all its so-called 'norms'.Why shud I even attempt to seek to fulfil everyone's tastes when I'm clearly aware that I do not conduct myself in a manner that tramples upon others' dignity, be it in terms of skin colour or religion or nationality?A piglet sucking on its mother's teats is purely natural.Which mammal doesn't do that?If it were that distasteful to followers of a certain religion, they can ask Him why He created mammal offspring to feed that way and why He even created that animal in the first place. Then again, no point arguing here.People have differing opinions. The votes shall speak for themselves. Which mammal doesn't do that?Yes, qedcwc that is the way you and I feel. I think the sight of a mother breastfeeding her child is a beautiful thing. But then again not everybody agrees. One important thing I thank BW for, is that I can see the wide variety of users here, and learnt a certain amount of tolerance. But pigs are very highly prized there, so I think they look upon the breast feeding with different eyes. Also, Islam, Christianity and Judaism (the Abrahamic faiths) have the same roots. There is the same caution against representing living things in all three religions ("thou shalt have no graven images"). This is mostly ignored in Christianity, but in Islam it is more strictly adhered to. That is why you see alot of Islamic art and architectural decoration have geometric designs. Phil
From the point of view from Sirius (or let's say Europe), this avatar is quite cute: it's something you show to your children when you are lucky enough for showing them a farm.Too many kids, specially in Paris, grow up without seeing any cow, pig, sheep, rabbit nor horse.Lots of natural things happen in farms; we are lucky to have a few ones still ^^That being said, a sow can be quite dangerous sometimes, specially if you try to touch her piglets when they are drinking milk...But once again, piglets are cute, and kids (or those who did not forget they were kids in the past) like watching them.I really don't see the problem with this avatar. Guest Kibs
There are avatars here showing penis silhouettes through undies here. And yet ppl are picking on a pic of a piglet drinking milk? I'm a Muslim and I hardly consider that offensive. Muslims can't eat (and for some, depending on their faith, can't touch) pork but we can very well deal with talking to a guy with a pig in their username and avatar. suckling_pig
My earliest memory about farm animals was not at a farm, but in the backyard of my childhood home. My parents bought a chick as a pet for us kids and when it became big, my father decided it would make a nice curry or something. So he caught the chicken, and with a knife, slit the throat almost all the way through. Unfortunately he lost his grip and the chicken lept to the ground and ran around in circles, with the head dangling off to one side and blood spurting all over the place !!!!I must have been 4 or 5 then. What a gory early memory for a child.
