Meow, The Cat Lovers Thread

I love cats but can't seem to hold them. Still a bit scared. The most I just pet their head or body.

You're like my bf when he first started getting close to cats. After a bit you'll get used to it and they'd rub your legs, and soon you'd learn to love them even more!

Hey.. I would make my own post but i really don't want the attention any more... If the GM things it should be a real post then it's fine.. make it anonymous if you can GM.

Hey guys... Does God teach us that we can mistreat and neglect animals? Well... From my parents, who are really hardcore christian-religious people (and i use the term "people" loosely), thats what God teaches us to do...

So we move into this new house which we put a lot of effort into designing, i get that... and my Sister brought a cat home from her friend's because her friend is moving back to JB. And she is a really adorable kitten.. I'll upload the pictures someday. She loves to hang around in my room and jump around... me and friend love to play with her... he would have taken her if he could but he lives way too far... Right now, my parents are literally saying, "I don't care. I want this cat out of the house now. It pees and shits everywhere! Our house is new that this cat is just destroying it!" (which fyi it's not true, she barely does that and when she does i always make it a point to clean it up but she mainly does it in my room but she has found a spot she likes... so just put some bedding there and she's fine... But no...) Drama much? oh yea and my mother exaggerated (yea.. whats new right?) and went "THIS THING PEES AND SHITS ALL AROUND THE HOUSE" yea... she said 'THING'.. So... So now my question is this... how did a animal lover come from parents who can't stand animals... AND WHO CLAIM to be religious people who helps out in animal baptizing and other animal stuff at the church... So i guess it's true... there's nothing real about my parents... it's all simply a facade... just a veneer, a deceitful ruse to be seen as good people... I'm not saying they are all bad... but they seriously need to be exposed... So don't be fooled the next time to visit me at my HouseWarming... You'll see these "nice" people... Remember not to be fooled.

So... A New House or A Young Kitten with no where else to go? If it were me i'll bring her to camp daily and take care of her if i could. I mean you can't expect a young kitten to immediately know where to pee and shit when she comes to a new home right? It takes some time to adjust... Sigh... All that i'm left with are the memories of her crawling up beside me while i'm sleeping or when i'm playing my games and just lies there to sleep... Tonight i have no idea what my father is planning to do to her... I'm already done all i can... Those who are true Christians... or actually any religion really... just pray for this young adorable kitten. It doesn't matter what religion you believe it. as long you believe and wish the best for this kitten, i'm sure it will help... I rarely ask people to pray for this anything... So if you can.. kindly do... It's hard living in a house of lies and deceit with animal haters when u yourself love them so much.

I don't even know where the cat is now... My dad barged into my room and took it... then locked me inside... Then they say how can i be so rude to them... Look at what they are doing... I abide by this always. RESPECT IS EARNED NOT GIVEN. Even if you're my parents... don't expect me to respect you... you first have to earn it.

@stbrianud - my sympathy to you.

It's a common occurence, and not just here in Singapore, but a lot of people have the strangest notions (not always good/right) toward animals. Even amongst the animal lovers, there are extreme ones, too. I'll share a couple of those I've encountered over the years here.

* disclaimer : If you, dear reader, happen to be highly sensitive toward racial or religious lines, please read no further.*

I used to help out with a group of elderly stray cat caregivers way back in 2001-2008. In those early days, animal welfare is the last thing on the government's mind. Speak up as one, and we literally got branded as troublemakers by the town councils.

Case 1

Elderly lady has been pushing a trolley around her estate, feeding and caring for strays since before I met her. She'd go about her business from 10pm till almost midnight every night. Several new flats had just sprung up and new residents have moved into the neighbourhood in 2001-2002. It was a July night when I had a call from another senior caregiver at night - "Ah Por is too scared to feed cats!" was all she told me.

It was a busy period with my work then, so I could only meet them up two days later, which was a Saturday evening. I was told that a middle-aged man had taken a bicycle chain to hit her and when she tried to make a police report, she was warned that the police would not get involved in matters "...with the church...". Yes, it sounded fishy, and after much cajoling, she revealed to us (me and a lady lawyer friend) where her assailant lived.

My lady friend and I decided to push her case, and went first to the police post, where a different officer listened to us and agreed to go with her to give the man a warning (yep, no arrests, coz animal welfare is just NOT on the charts those days). When we got to that flat, we found out that the man had a wife, who stoutly defended him and said these words "non-believers who feed strays are doing the work of the devil... the police cannot interfere with (sic) our church".

The case was left as it stood, no further action.

Of course, karma worked its way around, and exactly seven years after the incident, the couple lost their jobs, the man broke his leg (apparently the same side where he hit Ah Por) and they had to sell off their flat.

Case 2

The area I frequent was at one time, Singapore's best-managed stray cat estate, with considerate caregivers (who clean up, and who use dishes) and a sterilised and well-cared-for stray population. Plus we had a couple of good fosterers then.

In 2005 we had a sudden spate of cat abductions, where healthy, spayed and well-adjusted strays would disappear. All the cases were ginger/tabby/calico with white tummy and long tails. In a space of 3 months, 10 cats disappeared. And after some planning, a group of caregivers and student volunteers decided to mount a watch. We intentionally placed a rare ginger marbled cat in a very exposed public area. The cat was also a showoff, and loved attention. True to form, we noticed a sudden influx of young Malay girls and a couple visiting that spot within a few days, and one night, the couple returned with a cage.

I was summoned by the boys watching that time, and luckily, an experienced caregiver lived just upstairs. She intervened and stopped the couple from taking the cat. When I reach there, the couple was telling her how they loved "kuching" and wanted to adopt the cat. The senior caregiver made them agree to a condition - that she must see their home to accept that it is a suitable place to adopt the cat.

One of the students went with her to view the couple's flat, and brought back the scary news - the couple were hoarders! Somehow, they managed to keep "more than 20 cats" in their 9th-storey 3-room flat. Naturally, the caregiver refused to let them adopt, and referred them to SPCA. And got heaped with curses of "Allah will smite you, blah blah" in return. We even got a complaint to their MP against us for being "discriminatory against Malays". Just because the caregiver was chinese, and the students who caught them were Indian.

Only early this year was the family dealt with, though the case never made the press, they had accumulated 50+ cats in their flat, including a few dead ones.

Case 3

There were 3 senior caregivers I used to support, paying for the sterilisation of their cats and medicines for the strays under their care. One of them, a very experienced by cranky woman, had a stray who'd stand on two feet and rub his cheek against mine as a show of affection. Naturally, I was rather attached to him and was sad when he passed away in 2007.

After his death, the caregiver got really cranky, often calling me at all times of the day to rant and even shout at me. She'd demand sending nasty emails to the PM, writing poison pen letters to the press, and a host of ridiculous ideas, all of which I refused. Which only incensed her. The breaking point came when some new tenants moved into the block she stayed (its a private property, but not a condo). Hearing them sing hymns in the middle of the night is weird enough, but somehow she and those tenants got into a fight about her keeping+feeding cats at the backlane. A week later someone torched the ground-floor rear rooms where she'd lock her cats for the night. And seven cats perished.

But things got bad when the police and SCDF investigating the fire questioned her about her cats. She kept calling me to get involved, and well, keeping the cats illegally as she did was already not right. Then one of the new tenants came out and told her that she was only getting "...God's gift... for keeping filthy strays...", she hit the fan. The police and SCDF left them to their squabble and wrote off the incident as a cigarette accident. She could not get the new tenants out of their flat. And she could not get even. Not that sending nasty letters to the PM and MM then would do anything, the govt then wasn't interested.

She lashed out at me, calling me an "anti-Christ bastard". That was the last straw, and I stopped funding her from then on, and completely stopped funding cat caregivers since 2009.

These are all but some of the horror stories I've encountered. Like it or not, such crazy people abound. You can choose to put up with it, or, move on from it and not let it affect you. Or you can also choose to let it affect you.

Do come by BooksActually (No. 9 Yong Siak Street Tiong Bahru Estate) this coming Wednesday if you can. I shall be there in the evening and will be available to bring small groups of cat-lover friends around to visit some of the community cats in the vicinity. I'll be there from 7.00pm, and walking tours will depart from 7.30 and 8.50pm, each lasting just below an hour, to visit some of the community cats.

(yes, it is kinda like a cat outing.,....)

And do support the CWS calendar, you'll notice that two of the photos shown here are already featured on the calendar webpage, there are at least four more photos from yours truly. Best of all, its a yearful of cats!

Oh, so sorry, ressac!

CWS actually took the later peeps to meet the first group, so that everyone who registered could meet with ZacZac the blue-eyed cat featured in the calendar. We also managed to get a local feeder to show us the cat-with-a-duck-alter-ego. The group grew to almost 15 pax! Nvm, next time, PM me ahead lah. I'll include you on the to-expect list.

Just so you can plan ahead, we'll be doing a fur-and-food outing in end-Oct or early-Nov. It will be a Sat daytime outing, and will culminate with a visit to a makan place! Once CWS confirms, I'll update this thread.

;)

Thanks for supporting the meows!
