I'm more with ziddyzid on this topic: not a fan of handbag pop remixes. Nice selection by the way, Ziddyzid. The Aeroplane remix of Friendly Fires' Paris is one of my favorite tracks up until the bridge and then something goes wrong somewhere. Avicii's Levels is something I keep listening to at the moment too.

Just to balance out the birkins, I'll throw in a few tracks.

Ame's Rej is a micro-house classic, successfully combining the clean (but often too clinical) lines of Minimal with the heart of Progressive House.

And speaking of Minimal, Matias Aguayo built his DJ career spinning Minimal, so it was a bit of an inside joke when he released Basta Ya De Minimal, which in Portuguese means "fxxk this Minimal (House Music)". I like the original but here's the more accessible Koze Remix, which has a brighter sound. Great stuff for sunrise sets.

This next one is damn cock (in the sense that straight guys use the term, so close your mouths), but it's got a fabulous bass line. It's the bass that makes music sexy. Michael Jackson's Billie Jean oozes sex because of its brilliant bass line, like a sleek satiny panther on the prowl. Too little and it sounds cold, trying. Too much and it loses its sexiness because it's too blatant. Think of a completely naked guy vs. a guy in a wet t-shirt and sports jockstrap completely soaked through ... or maybe that's just me. Ahem. Ok, this is Mr Jack by Lunar City Express: listen out for the premature ejaculation moment in the middle of the track.

And last, just a bit of Progressive House. The best House music takes the audience on a journey or the sense of a journey, where even if the destination is unknown there is hint of something wonderful waiting just beyond the horizon, at once universal and yet deeply meaningful to each at a personal level. Before people start to wonder what I've been taking: Man With The Red Face by Mark Knight & Funkagenda.

Ok I wasn't gonna post again so soon, but someone messaged me asking what the ^%$& a certain song was that he had just heard played over his workplace's PA system. It was this, an early House track from 1998 entitled "Horny" by Mousse T. This vid's got karaoke subtitles, because the lyrics are just priceless.

And in the same vein is the remix of "Work" by Masters at Work, the moniker under which Little Louie Vega and Kenny Dope Gonzalez worked during their earlier days. This is the 2007 remix of the original remix (yes, I know I'm getting old when I know these things).

I couldn't find a good vid with the lyrics, but here are some of the words:

I want you take your broom and sweep my yard

You better brush it good or we could fall apart

Don't give me no shortcut thing you have all day and night

I had to satisfy so you better do it right

Work! What you waitin
g
for

Work! Put your back in it

Work! Just a little bit more

Work! Sure you're wanting it now

Work! Till your body's hurting

Work! Working hard and long

Work! And when you finish that

Work! I want your Goddam tongue

Go down go down go down come on come on come on

P.S. Glowingember - I've been frickin' trying to think what your DP was supposed to be a parody of. Suddenly at half midnight, listening to black women sing dirty songs, I realize it's Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

I cannot wait for MDNA to get released.

Mdna-standard-edition-cover.jpg

I was reading some thread on the Internet and found someone who remarked that this will be her first post-Gaga, post-Guetta, post-dubstep album... and I was like, "omgyeah.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!" The dance scene has certainly undergone a big revolution and mass commercial success while she was missing, totally makes me wonder how her modern-disco album would sound like.

Good thing we're over the hip-hop and modern rock trends, so hopefully we're not getting any more urban dud (Hard Candy) or mediocre attempt at mixing electronic with live rock instruments (American Life). The last time she did a pure-dancefloor-no-bullshit album was Confessions in 2005, and that's my most favorite album from her, so I can't tell you any further just how much I'm really really excited to hear what she has to offer.

And if the samples are of any indication, we're definitely on to something good here. :)

Meanwhile, Katy Perry debuted her new single at #1. This gave her the sixth #1 from the Teenage Dream era, which means that she was supposed to have broken Michael Jackson's record and become the first artist in the history to have six #1s from the same record. Except that, uh oh, stupid Billboard changed the rule and the new single will not be counted as part of the Teenage Dream because it comes from a repackaged edition and such.

I'm not even a Katy Perry fan. I think she's like cotton candy (generic, no substance, disposable, but kind of fun anyway) and I think MJ is definitely superior in every way possible. Katy having more #1s than MJ does not imply anything aside from that Katy is more relevant to her generation than MJ was to his generation, and that's probably because this is a dumber generation. But so what... if you're going to count singles from reissued editions such as you've always did in the past (e.g. Rihanna's Disturbia, Mariah's Don't Forget About Us), then you might as well do it for Katy. Be more consistent, Billboard.

I've been looking for the song on Youtube. Thanks for putting up this clip. I like to be able to read the lyrics at the same time. :-)

Agree with you on Billboard's rules not being very consistent. But with the internet and downloads, the ability to chalk up no.1s seems to be getting easier with some acts.

Listening to Madonna's MDNA right now. Quick review:

  • Girl Gone Wild: instant radio favorite; ****
  • Gang Bang: crazy shit production, sounds like some underground dance anthem; ****
  • I'm Addicted: this works best when played loud; ***1/2
  • Turn Up the Radio: true to its title, it's an easy and tested pop formula made for the radio; ***
  • Give Me All Your Luvin': we've all heard this, it's no brilliance but a good guilty pleasure; ***1/2
  • Some Girls: tuneless track rescued only by Orbit's excellent production; **1/2
  • Superstar: this one has all the beats removed, and replaced with guitar distortions, it's moderately catchy; ***
  • I Don't Give A: a talk-singing collaboration with Nicki Minaj which carries neither punch nor melody; *1/2
  • I'm a Sinner: it sounds like a song from the Ray of Light era that didn't make the cut; **1/2
  • Love Spent: another passable filler, not even William Orbit can make something interesting out of this; **
  • Masterpiece: okayish ballad that won her a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song; ***
  • Falling Free: another ballad, it's good but I can't help thinking that they didn't work out this potential masterpiece to its full potential; ***1/2

Overall, a decent Madonna album that, after the first half of the album, stops to capitalize on the dance craze. It's better than American Life, Music, or Hard Candy; but it doesn't rank among her best works, either. Three stars.

Must download Girl Gone Wild and Gang Bang, though.

Agree with Derryfawne on Gang Bang.

It's like she's charging with dark vengeance as her coat. Each beat synchronized with her black stilettos.

Neon lights flashed against her body

And she smirked, "Drive Bitch".

R.I.P. Donna Summer, 63

The original disco queen, truly ahead of her time. Her single 'I Feel Love', produced with Giorgio Moroder's innovative production, is responsible for the fully-synthesized sound that makes up the majority of dance music nowadays. All dance artists definitely owe their career to her success.
