I've never really thought that far but I would like to think that by 50, i would have seen most of the world that i want to see. Have enough money to live for the rest of my life.

If there's a companion, it'll be great, if not, i think i can survive by myself. I'll be doing some art and craft cos i like it though not enough to earn from it. I would finally learn to cook and perhaps learn to do some gardening as well. I may or may not live in Singapore but the most important thing is, i would enjoy myself wherever i am and make the best of it.

Hopefully, I will do some voluntary work, maybe with animals, maybe with humans. It doesn't matter as long as i have things to occupy my time and i find my days fully engaged instead of becoming one of those elderly staying at home all the time and wasting away.

wan lao wu;

Please dun feel this way. Everyone is unique, not necessary must have rich and famous, with bf and live a luxury life at 50's. I think health is the most important element at this stage, its good to have wealth but its secondary. So cheer up, you only live once, make each of your day special and stop looking back....there are lots of interesting things ahead, move on!

I am a Technical consultant. Well, as i mentioned health is important, and i intend to live simple, and treasure freedom more than luxury goods.

There are many of your age group in V Club. The visitors are mainly blue collar, non-professional working class. Many of them still stays with parents!!! Go visit and more importantly, socialise with your contemporary so you dont feel so left out.

There are still a lot of places that i would like to go but haven't been to. I don't HAVE to go but would be nice if I could. I'm looking at America (both north and south), Japan (would love to try an open air onsen), China, Spain, Portugal and perhaps Africa.

But as thaiboyz said, health is very important, considering the amount of money one has to pay the doctors. It's sad but it's true, you can't afford to get sick and hopefully at age 50, I'll still be healthy and spry.

Retiring in Phuket will definitely stretch your dollar. The tourist bears are an eyeful too as i'm a bear lover :)

i can imagine myself retiring at age of 45 and then migrate to Phuket enjoying life there..

I was told that living cost in Northern Thailand such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai much more cheaper than Phuket. Maybe because many angmohs go for sunbathing, doing this might stretch your $$$ :D

Seems like everyone like to retire in Thailand. Me too...haha...just simply love that country, nice food and people, rich culture and slower pace, goodlooking and friendly guys, cheaper and comfortable....So we all migrate there one day..haha....wonder would the thai govt ever suspect..?

I prefer asian country, dun want to be treated as a second class citizen. Anyway, each has his own preference. As long as we are happy and comfortable, go ahead. Retirement is time for us to take things slow and easy, no longer want to rush here and there, to meet deadlines and climbing corporate ladder. Enough is enough....i hope these days come faster for me. :P

Guest Golden Age

Hi All, this come in my mind.. Ever think of how are we going to pass our old age time? Especially those who can't get a companion or not willing to settle down or don't wanna get married.. What if, we are so weak one day and can't even walk? Any solutions?

That's a depressing thought... And that is what I had also thought of... And a drive for me to retain my relationship with my boy at (almost) all cost!... If things can be worked out, I will work it out.

I guess if we really ends up alone int he end, it would be better to have VERY good AJ friends now... At least can look out for one another when old... And can check into the same old folk's home etc...

Aiyoh... Making me feel depressed thinking about it leh...

Substantial savings is paramount for old age in our materialistic society regardless if you are mobile or not. Use it wisely, money can buy comfort, companionship till death, high standard of living, vibrant life-style etc....... Look around the different housing estate and you can easily spot PLU couple in totally different appearance and match. The monetary factor is at work. For those with minimal savings, the good news is that the authority is now spearheading the hiring of older workers.

Anyone wants to work in a fast-food chain or convenience store?

Yeah Golden Age, it's very good topic. As mentioned by Enjoylife77, the substantial savings is the paramount of old age which I agreed fully with this statement and in addition, the good health is very very important.

Should one of our companion in old age "to go to heaven first" and leave you alone behind, no other choice then to go to old folk's home and who pay for this, only with the substantial savings, eventhough we might have some good nieces and nephews who might help us morally, mentally and hopefully financially (if needed), but how much and how long can they help this as they have their own family too? One of moral of the story, be good to closed relatives. Who knows?

Well, this is just a sideline to get some infos, is our local laws allowed to adopt children by male couple? I understand that gay marriage is not recoqnised here, but a male couple allowed to adopt children .... hehehe

Guest gracefully

it's the power to live life in the now, in nowness and be a nowist that will prepare us for the days ahead.

a happy state of mind today, and each other days ahead, will tag us with good health; whilst money is the fuel that powers up our physical resources until we bid goodbye to this world.

i always believe we are parents to our own being here -- keeping a good health and be conscious of health related issues are issues not to be taken lightly. for those who like sports, do it now and for less adventuring guys [like me], take up meditation or yoga or qiqong -- it's the spirit towards healthy mind that will make us less burden to others when we greet our golden age.

in my opinion, there are few MUST DO things to prepare us to grow old graciously:

1. let's money make money -- eg, buy insurance

2. keep working and stop complaining -- i know it's not that easy but learn to love what we are doing

3. be close to family members -- have a weekly dinner together [if everyday is not possible] but dun just eat and say nothing. be proactive, share and spread your love

4. treasure your partner -- start organising, planning. have a more open communication .. dont just say 'i love you' and having nothing plan for the next 10/20 years. believe that this relationship will be forever!

5. get hitched and start a relationship! -- ok ok .. good luck to the singles. i always believe there is always someone for everybody [no?] -- it's our fickle-mindedness and our yearning for the 'oh-the-next-one-will-be-the-right-one-for-me' attitude that stops us from settling down.

6. now i pray that we will always be healthy, independent and leave this world peacefully -- hugs .. and oh, happy valentine, brothers!

regards

Hmmm, all contributors had written well with very good suggestion too and some of the points I have taken note and also implemented .. hahaha such as insurance and kept exercise, like some people said that golfing only game for all men which it's nonsense, if someone not fit, how he is able to walk for 6km to finish the game .. hahaha

good health is very very important.

To maintain good health, I take cod liver oil (capsule) after every meal. It has a good source of Vitamin A important for healthy skin tissue and vision, Vitamin D important for bone growth, density and calcium absorption. EPA to promotes circulation and good cardiovascular health and DHA to promotes mental function. In addition, I absorb Vitamin C from the orange juice I squeezed every night.

And of course exercise and proper meal is essential.

Yeah, maybe to save alot when we are young, so no more holiday, good food and luxury goods and keep saving, till we are old hor, then we have money to retire early.

Well, this is the theoretical wish for everyone to save so much money when young included me, but the practicality it's very difficult to achieve, as so many other temptations to spend the money what you have earned with your harwork and other unforseen circumstances that you have no other choice to spend it.

For me, save the money where possible and then spend wisely.

  • 2 weeks later...

When I read the report about ex DPM Raja who died a few days ago that he was suffered from Alzheimer's desease or brain dead since 1998, so almost 8 years and during this period, although he had no children, he was taken care by 2 maids and 4 nurses who then took turn round the clock. Well, he had the pension money who able to finance this high expenses.

To think of it, it’s quite scary people like us as PLUs when we are getting very old and if we are in his shoes, no children etc, where got so much money, not even to hire a maid and for so many years. People might say, then go to Old Folk's Home. Well, to live there, it’s not free. If this happened, it would be very scary lah.

I was very sad at hearing the death of DPM Raja. It made me think as well about having no children after passing on. I don't think I'll make a great parent so perhaps that is a good thing afterall. Besides, with all the trouble in the world, the rising cost of having a kid, even straights are reconsidering bring kids into the world.

As to retiring early, I would dearly love to have the kind of money to do that but i don't foresee it. I spend money quite freely on things that I want to do, e.g. travelling. I'm of the mindset that while i'm young and able, might as well go for such things instead of when i'm feeble and old. Perhaps this is an instant gratification thing for me but who is to say that i might be able to even go to malaysia when I'm old? i could be struck with all sort of diseases by then and be stuck in a hospital bed somewhere. That is why i must do things in the here and now and that is why i don't think i'll have enough money to retire early.

DPM Raja left his mark in history with his Pledge of Allegiance, the straights have children to carry on their names and what have we? Thankfully, with the advance in technology, we have blogs and other ways to leave our mark. For me, the greatest boon is the digital camera where my travels are captured and made into ablums so that one day, when i'm old, i can open up the ablums and reminisce my past and leave my mark for others to find.

I also agreed that we have to save money especially during rainy days and then spend wisely.

What's point save so much money then suddenly kena stroke, cancer or bird flu(touch wood), can't even enjoy our hard earning money the already gone leh.

For me, just work, save money, buy insurance for sickness and spend also but wisely and within our own limit (if I could afford holiday to Bangkok so be it, as some of friends kena bought over by the Credit Card, went holidays to Europe for almost $4,000 plus and this amount can be paid by installment, now they are indebted to the Credit Card, to pay the monthly installment and now the company is in bad shape, he might get retrenched, finish lah ..... like that. That's why spend wisely within own limit.

Besides suicidal death, the mode of our death is not controlled by us. We might be healthy and fit, but drop dead the next moment. Or to be more scary, we could be bed ridden, a vege, and depending on life sustaining machines and our lives cling on for years.

Of course, to be healthy and rich at old age would be the best. The other extreme is to be sick and poor.

If i have to choose with limited choice, i will take health and less wealth. Just dun want to be bed ridden and wait for my death on my sick bed. Let it pass quickly.

euthanasia should be legalised and made available as an option for those who are bed ridden, brain dead or in dreadful pain from incurable diseases such as cancer. I say "option" because there are religions that prohibit suicide.

ideally, one should retire from full time work by 55. Not 62, 65 or horrors, 80! Just imagine working all one's life without time to enjoy and experience all the wonderful things that this world has. That's not life, it's slavery and punishment. Of cos, owing to the high cost of living here, many have no choice but to continue working to put food on the table. so to those of you in your 20's and 30's, start your financial planning now and cut down on consumerism. With some luck you may get to retire at 55 or even earlier. Then go enjoy life while you still can. Not much good if you have lots of money in the bank but cannot climb the Great Wall, eat your favourite sinful foods etc.

As one 60 year old once told me (he retired at 46), "I didn't want to be the richest man in the graveyard." Or another friend who made this poignant observation: "There are many 'indispensable' people lying in the graveyard."

Even if we do not have bags of money in the bank, we can make our Sing$ stretch further by relocating elsewhere, such as Thailand, Malaysia, India and China.

From now , wat i think is dont think too much but need to plan well and treasure wat u have currently is the most important like ur parents, family(i mean attached) and those who helped u in many ways as in the end we all have to go back where we come from... back to the ground.. i know it is horror to go back due to we ourselves doing sinful things that nobody might want to forgive us?

Dont u guys think so?

Hi guys,

It's me again. Try to start a new topic. The question this time is simple, how do you see yourself at retirement?

Since my previous posting on the "Anyone in the same boat as me?" I have actually come to think about how would I want to see myself growing old and retire.

I think this topic maybe more like a spin off from my previous topic in which it turns out that many of us are lonely and felt alone especially those people who might be in the same boat as me. And since most of us in BW are in middle age. So I just wanted to know how each of us see ourselves when we retired and probably see how individuals plan for their own retirement. Would we want to be doing the same thing that we are doing today e.g. going out clubbing, drinking etc? Or would we be 180 degrees different from what we used to be i.e. become more domesticate, keeping pets, living a quiet life?

Thanks.

Old age, retirement... That will spin off in 2 ways for me I guess...

1. I have someone to grow old with me

I guess I would be enjoying the day with him. Wake up in the morning and brew a nice cuppa coffee for both of us, with some nice loaf of bread with ham or eggs.

Than we would go out in the morning breeze and do some exercise and wlaking in the park, follow by some resting on the bench looking at other passer-by doing their exercise, chatting with each other about the young people and how we are when we are young.

Lunch comes by which we have some porridge at the coffeeshop, market or home, than we will follow by some TV programming watch, DVD/VCD, or reading books we would be interested in. Once a while we would be out in orchard road and see what the younger generation would be doing at that time, do some shopping. Or we could be out doing some sport, afternoon stage produtions or movie.

Dinner time is probably a time we could cook togather to get some new receipe into our mandune world and we could had so much fun cooking togather, TV would be follow by dinner that bring us to our slumber world....

Wonderful dream, I would dream on.

2. If I am alone

I guess I would be doing the same, except maybe when I am out, I would ogle at guys i saw on the road, when shopping, will do some cruising :P

hehehehehehe

It's just me.... Asura... don't fear, but be very afraid....

I will wake up early to go to gym, then settle down with a cup of coffee and newspaper. Take a slow stroll home, feed my pets, take a nab and read some books. Look at yourself in the mirror regularly, thinking ways to smooth my wrinkles and maintain my youthful look. Important is to keep myself on track and young at heart. Plastic surgeries...hmm...Maybe...hahaha :D
