Guest Guest
True, we are experiencing foreigner flood and we should not be saying welcome more foreigners to come in. But the photos shown are on existing foreigners who have already come in and who are minding their own business. Are they not allowed to enjoy their weekends in the public but to be imprisoned in their own hostels?Do you want to be at the beach adjusting your breast in your bra with them around, looking like you will be gang raped anytime?Do you want your void deck to be flooded with these people eating, drinking, sleeping, pissed drunk, peeing and shitting all over the place? This is not a question of race or color, they can be a group of Singaporeans, Chinese, Caucasian, Japanese, Koreans doing this and they will get condemned all the same! This is simply too disgusting!

Guest Guest
A man loves animals so much that he feeds stray cats, dogs and birds in your housing estate. The birds shit all over the place, window sills, car roofs; the cats reproduce quickly and give cat calls at night disturbing your sleep. The unfinished food attracts rats and ants etc. The dogs urinate on the void deck walls. Yes, it is natural to be annoyed by these animals' presence. But think again - who is to blame? The irresponsible feeder, right? Your hatred towards these animals is misplaced and is not going to solve your problems. As long as the feeder does not stop his act, these animals will keep coming and there will no end to your troubles nor your hatred. What an unexpected u turn and what an analogy??? ANIMALS? Yes, they eat, shit, pee anywhere they like, and we all know who this irresponsible feeder is.

kallang25
Dre post is laughable. Malaysian politics is 100% different from Singpore. In Singapore, citizens are at a disadvantage as compared to PR. In Malaysia, it is citizens who are Chinese and Indian being discriminated against citizen who are Malays.2 separate issues altogether. How can u compare them? What a joker!Firstly, the Malaysian govt is also made up of the Malaysian CHINESE Association and the Malaysian INDIAN Congress so they are ALL complicit in this political arrangement. And it's not just the Chinese Malaysians that are disadvantaged, it's the Indians too. Their opposition, headed by Anwar Ibrahim is against such racial politics.Secondly, Brunei and Malaysia does not have many PRCs coming in. Malay is the national and working language of these two countries and they take labour from Indonesia and also Burma. Only Singapore takes in PRCs.Thirdly, I find it laughable that so many of you here don't like Malaysia's policies and THEN turn around to say native Singaporeans deserve special benefits over foreigners. Some of you have mentioned education quotas, HDB subsidies, Singaporeans first when it comes to employment... WAKE UP. How is this different from Malaysia? Chinese and Indians were once regarded as foreigners in Southeast Asia too, many of whom did not intend to migrate here for good. Imagine now, ALL foreigners in Singapore are given citizenship making them equal to native Singaporeans, and now you see why the Malayasian government gives special benefits? If you want benefits for us native citizens just admit it and stop being so hyprocritical. This is why I will never understand you brainless opposition supporters. We embraced all nationalities and welcomed tourists and workers all over the world and were proud to be a tourist centre and regional hub. But 30 years later, the word xenophobia is applied to certain Singaporeans. Worse still when gays are viewd with disdain by mainstream society, there are racist gays who in turn ride the banner of "nationalism: and "patriotism" to view other nationalities with disdain. Guest Guest
Yes, they are jam packing the beach and parks. Again whose fault? Who brought them into the country in the first place without providing them with amenities? Little India on weekends is a nightmare. Someone even suggested alloting a park to accommodate such crowds. Such a suggestion is noble and positive. If you work and live in a foreign country, would you not go to public places to relax and perhaps join the crowds? Do you have better suggestions?Whose fault? It takes two hands to clap. If they don't come, nobody can bring them in. Note that they are a lowly educated class, so it is not surprising that some of their behaviour is unsightly and loud. (Am not saying each and every one of them is) So what is the use of criticising something that they cannot change themselves? Or would you suggest an educational campaign to teach them social graces? If they prove to sabotage our tourism industry, then it is the authorities' job to make sure they do not. Can anyone answer why they have not taken any action? So because they are of a "lowly educated class", we must bear with it? Are they human or not? Even dogs can be trained to change themselves, why is it "that they cannot change themselves?"?? Why should we tolerate such anti-social behaviors??卖国贼这个罪名我已经领教过多次了,你还是省省吧。讨论要讲理,要客观,乱套罪名只有得到反效果的。所以你现在也该明白叫别人家xenophobic的反效果,自己也该省省了吧!

Guest guest
We do personally owe the island. If not us, then who owns it? One particular political party? Your comment is as bad as the one which said Sentosa is not own by us. And yes, they can go as long as they pay the entrance fee. But as citizens of this land, we deserve every special treatment over other nations, richer or poorer, because by the grace of god, we were born in Singapore and we have to defend that little piece of island, and they do not have to.Singapore isn't "owned" by anyone; not any one of us at least. Ownership implies control, sovereignty, power; we have none of those things over Singapore's land and policy on the large scale. Do not mistake being a pivotal cog (if even that) of the system for having any power. This isn't like some countries in revolution or poverty where the citizens of working age have actually endured the suffering and made sacrifices for the nation's growth. You were born into privilege, raised in privilege and are now so accustomed to entitlement that even the stipulations of a PUBLIC PLACE has to be altered to please your vision. This isn't even about foreigneers breaking any of the Sentosa/local rules (i.e. spitting, littering). I have no doubt many of them do those things. But many posts in this very thread are complaining about them literally standing on the open beach just existing. You are championing the exact same sentiments that fuel homophobes who claim that homosexuals should be barred from marrying because it threatens THEIR sancity of marriage which should remain a sacred and exclusive right to the straight community. monochrome
No. Sg's history hailed way back to the 14th century, even before Parameswara fled from Java to Sg (then called Selat and later Temasek.) A princess was said to have lived at Bukit Larangan (Fort Canning Hill). It had all along been ruled by Malay sultans until 1824 when Raffles forced Sultan Hussein to cede Sg forever to the East India Company. Chinese, Indians and people from neighbouring regions flocked to Sg without forging a Singaporean identity. The British did not make any effort to forge a common identity as they believe in divide and rule. Each community was busy earning their own living and minding their own business. As long as the British welcomed them here, they were happy to stick to their own groups. Sg has a short history, becoming independent in 1963 through merger with Federation, only to be kicked out of Malaysia in 1965. Ever since then, the govt has been successful in forging the Sg identity through National Service, education, the national anthem and mass media. But I agree there is no point digging up ancient history.I was talking about our identity, Nightingale, not Singapore's history. Otherwise, yes we can go on and on about how this land was once part of the Srivijaya empire before the Malay sultans gained a foothold, warding off the Majapahit empire down south, and Ayutthaya to the north, so on and so forth. However, what I am contesting is the dominant narative that our Singaporean identity only began taking shape only in 1965, as that is when our nation came into being. This is the national identity discourse and there is an underlying one that hasn't been thoroughly explored: cultural identity. It is a myth that the immigrants did not interact under the British when in fact, it happened in our daily lives. While they did divide and rule, that certainly did not stop locals from carrying about their daily activities in the market, going to the post office etc. Not all kampongs were racially segregated, in fact, a great number of them had sizeable portions of other races living side by side. The national library has an excellent archive on this. Before English was implemented as our working language, everyone spoke some form of Malay to communicate. I am peranakan through and through so my family can attest to that cultural amalgamation. Beyond this, we have shared cuisines; ingredients from one community flowed to another and a fusion of flavours and tastes came forward. This fusion of cultures is also reflected in names of places: Tiong Bahru, or Kreta Ayer(牛车水) for example. So what I'm getting at is this: While the national anthem, ns and the like have certainly formed part of our national identity, we cannot ignore the fact that cultural identity forms a big part of our Singaporean identity, and that cultural part has been brewing long before 1965. And that's what makes us Singaporean - it has taken nearly 200 years in the making, not 47 years. Edited February 14, 2013 by monochrome

When I take a look at the picture, the first thing that I see are all white specks of litter are surrounding them. Please don't tell me that those white specks are "frangipani flowers" surrounding the coconut trees too, OK? To make it worse, what do you think of people airing their shoes and slippers in public places like that? When LKY claimed that he will not see people in Singapore having any social grace here in his lifetime, he has these foreigners, whom he himself brought in, to thank for it? This has absolutely nothing to do with homophobia. Homosexuals don't make love or have sex in public. Whether homosexuals have a family neucleus or not is a private concern. But this, in THIS very picture, has everything to do with what we can see, touch, and even SMELL in public.
Guest Guest
Sorry to bore you again. I should not have gone through that ancient history part. I do apologise. First of all, when talking about national identity, we must look at the definition of the word 'nation'. The dictionary defines it as a large group of people living in one area sharing their own govt, language and traditions. But when you look at the historians' definition of national identity, they share a common understanding different from the layman's. 'Nation' applies most appropriately to small European nations like France, Italy etc. where they share a homogeneous race, language, culture etc. But when this term applies to plural societies in Asia, it has to be modified to mean a group of people where different races identify themselves with a shared history and sentiments. Hence, USA is considered a "young" nation with its melting pot of ethnic groups. They share the American dream and American values. As for Sg, such a national consciousness did not occur till after our independence.Yes, different races mix in the market place and there is cultural diffusion, leading to cultural hybrids like peranakan culture etc. But that is not sufficient to be categorised as being a nation, strictly speaking. When Sun Yat Sen came to Sg for his nationalist cause, the educated Chinese here were overwhelming pro-Kuomintang. They did not identify themselves as Singaporeans first. The school textbooks here also put up the Nationalist flag of China (qingtian bairi mandi hong - blue sky white sun against a red background). My parents' generation still called Mandarin as guoyu (national languge) even though I had to keep reminding them that our national lang is Malay. Similarly, the concept of Malaysia and Indonesia is very recent even though cultural diffusion had taken place throughout the archipelago centuries ago. But nobody during these early days identified themselves as "we Malaysians" or "we Indonesians" even though they share something common in the "Malay" culture. It is sad that both countries are now accusing each other of stealing cultural heritage from each other (food items, songs, dances etc.)And how did this entire two paragraphs of words addresses anything at all? Sounds like another grandfather and grandmother story. I espcially like the part about "Hence, USA is considered a "young" nation with its melting pot of ethnic groups". .Agree. Most Singaporeans are not racist outwardly. But racial prejudice does exist. If you show your prejudice outwardly in behaviour, then sociologists term it as "racial discrimination". And yes, the western European nations have experienced heightened racism because their govts have opened the flood gates, leading to reactions against immigrants. Many French citizens are calling loudly to ban the Muslim headwear for girls in schools. They shout the same thing "Do as the Romans do when in Rome". Norway saw the killing of Norwegians by a fellow ultra-nationalist Norwegian. A few extremists have lost their reason. And yes globalisation is a double edged sword cutting both ways. It is up to the govts to decide how open they want their societies to be to foreign impact and weigh it against economic benefits they think they can get. On the other hand, Bhutan remains a hermit kingdom without such troubles. And what is the point again??
Guest Guest
These are al the generalization that u have to face one day when you go to US to work or study one day. It's likely that these generalizations and discrimination and racism will seldom come from well-educated people who dun see the world like a frog in a well!I worked in US before and I don't go around littering on their land and airing my shoes and slippers all over the place. And if people discriminate me for that, I deserve it. You want to go live and work in other countries, learn about what is the social norm over there first. Guest Guest
Your same old story of taking two hands to clap. If they don't come? But they have already come! And more will come even after 2016. Firstly, you cannot stop them. You are not the govt and you do not call the shots. Secondly, they have families to feed. Do not forget there are many who want to sneak in illegally by boats and thank goodness, most are caught by our police. Is there any point repeatedly bashing them in your postings? Are there no other more worthwhile topics to discuss? So we are suppose to live our lives quietly, endure in silence, and bear with it for as long as they are here? For Pete's sake, THIS IS OUR HOME, NOT THEIRS! If someone is making things distasteful for you a day, it may be tolerable. But for the remaining time of their stay here..? That brings it to a new level all together!!If there is no point "repeatedly bashing them in (our) postings", there is much lesser point suffering in silence forever. And our voices are a reflection of our unhappiness here in Singapore. And people like you are not doing any of us any favours by trying to quell down our displeasure at all! And people like you are not doing any of us any favours by telling us to accept them as they are!!Yes they are humans. Dogs can be trained by owners and dog trainers. In fact, dogs are more obedient than humans. That is why they are called Man's Best Friends. If humans can change, then why do we still have delinquents, drug addicts, compulsive gamblers, kleptomaniacs, violent wife beaters, etc? Some people cannot change. Think about culture and personality. If you are brought up speaking a certain language and subscribing a certain religion, is it easy to change? If your personality is introverted, will you feel comfortable if choose a job that requires you to meet a lot of clients and travel a lot? When Hong Kongers migrate to Canada, many of the Whites there cannot stand them because they (just like many PRCs) speak Cantonese very loudly. Some Whites even refuse to patronise Chinese restaurants because of this. So is it possible to ask these Hong Kongers to please tone down their voices? It is like asking a duck to stop swimming. What examples you use!! Are you telling me that the Hongkies are still shouting at the top of their voices in Canada now? What do you mean "Some people cannot change"? What do you mean "if you are brought up speaking a certain language and subscribing a certain religion, is it easy to change"? What do you mean "It is like asking a duck to stop swimming"?These 40% foreigners are people, if they cannot change, then we might as well bring in more robots here. FURTHERMORE, if they cannot change, why should WE change? Why should 60% of the Singaporean population change just so that the 40% foreigners need not change?? If those people wants to come onto this land, then they had better change to suit OUR lifestyle.Using your own example, you seemed to be saying that the Canadians should learn to adapt to the Hongkies way of shouting, instead of asking the Hongkies to tone down.So should we tolerate them? Well, is there any other choice? If you have a better solution, I would like to hear from you. So long as they are not a security threat, we have to tolerate. Posting hate threads will only serve to spread hatred even towards those foreigners who are well-mannered, gracious and polite. Not every foreigner is a scum. Scums exist in any community foreigner or local. Let us face it. Even locals are guilty of littering. The other day I was in a toilet when this old uncle threw a tissue paper into the washing basin even though the rubbish bin is just next to it. He was not a foreigner. Then another day I was walking with a fellow gay in his early 20s towards the bus stop. He suddenly threw tissue paper onto the ground. And he was supposed to have received Moral Education in our schools! I chided his act and his reply was "We have sweepers to clean up for us wat."So if they need to congregate and overcrowd the place. Let them! If you feel very strongly about their habits, there are 2 ways of dealing with them. Tell the police to spend their entire weekends observing them and arresting them as soon as they throw their first litter. But is this suggestion feasible? Will the police employ a large task force all over the island? Alternatively, write to the authorities to launch an education campaign in different foreign languages. Other than these, I cannot think of any positive solution. But to repeatedly label and stereotype a particular foreign community negatively is being extremist, unproductive and only makes oneself annoyed to no end. Don't you agree? If you "cannot think of any positive solution" and if you want to take a defeatist attitude and suffer in silence, nobody will stop you. But while we are vocally expressing our displeasure about the omnipresence of such foreigners here, don't try to convince us that the problem we are really facing is not a problem in reality.
