AnH
4 hours ago, Since u r here said: ??? What is about the gathering? I did mention i m not alone in my flat previously @AnH wow , gymnocalycium lover! i have recently gotten Astros of abt 2cm nia but i felt them so expensive (cos most plants and flowers are standing upright, evn far from the lift u are able to view them) but for succulents and astros - they r rather “flat” on the surface!!! Unless it is those from temperate ctry - really huge (ref to pic) i dont quite like cacti - looking succulents ; but i like Astros cos they looked abit like pumpkin(yes i like halloween/ghost- themed parties/events but not same thru-out boring haunted hse like at RWS) evryone kept mentioning Candy!! But i hardly get to thompson area. I doubt my Astros has held their roots into the soil yet after so long... do u have any tips abt watering astros? i dont even dare to go to GDo or carouselland, many too tempting to buy if i m there! yes i love gymno! love the colours and the way they will change colours depend where you grow them as for astro, where do you place them? i have a few but they don't seem to grow that well under growlights... currently they are at my kitchen window which has the whole afternoon sun... and they seem to grow better(one actually blooms) which is said on the net that they are sun-loving cacti, do you give them fertilizers? i do that twice monthly

Bkk is a shopping heaven - but i think Gays tend to go there for the wrong reason, goodness!!! just like we have a thread of 60gardening BW members - but no1 spoke up about Succulent (airplant ie passe -many kept talking at one point) at all the Focus all went wrong: succulents and Cacti are in the trend , not cos the Fashion wind is blowing blindly at plant-lovers, but for a strong reason, eg i dont really keep cacti, but i believe we still can have a respectful and fruitful topic still (which is why the thread is for) - out thread is TOTALLY dead (sad to say so) esp from Mid June onwards Senior Admins went quiet over here, gardening is part of daily life , we kept learning and kept exploring just like every second we need to breathe there shouldnt be a time when all have no issues or no sharing about Plants and garden, i could have nothing to share , but the rest of 59 mbrs should have something to raise. if the same old member kept sharing, it appears as he has nothing better to do! Now every building and offices are into rooftop garden & farming as well as greeneries (esp if u need to claim BCA subsidies) there many events on gardening-related (NOT just GDO) , that one can share over here too: i was surprised that many didnt knw that Changi airport or botanical gardens or Gardens by the bay has cacti parks : Hope no1 is still getting conventional stuff or keychains/chopsticks as wedding favours? now (Not just in sg) provide plants or seedlings w pot for weddings or co. events/roadshows/.opening etc saw that an angmoh couple made their own pots and plant in succulents for their wedding parties or bdays! even, plant (selling in) vending machine -- no need a retail store (as disruptive service) I like unique concepts for instance: mine are all in the my bedroom too... under growlights... which weekends or some weekdays out to the afternoon sun at the kitchen actually, i have a few fertilisers to use... of course, the 'famous' HB101 and 2 other fertilisers specially for cactus & succulents(off the shelf) and self made banana skin fertiliser I haven't gotten any plants from China, somehow i'm not too sure about plants coming from a 4 seasons countries... Thailand has almost all... 😁

The clip will slowly melt a hole on any plastic but takes time if you need plenty or big holes. Alternatively can use an old knife, heated on the stove to do the same. 10 hours ago, Coolbriz said: Hmm not really. shyc
I have short attention span so tend not to read when thing become too lengthy. Watching and learning from YouTube is a preferred choice for me. Not in favour of using artificial lighting too as I understand it might have to mimic nature and hence turn on full day if not at least half day which like u mention will incur increase in electrical bills. My usage was since it was already purchased as a gift for me and added support during gloomy days. Anyway it had already been in cold storage, just adding my 2cents worth since someone mentioned earlier. Bloody water was also used by my mom. Personally rarely prepare raw meat so dun use them. I do use washing water of rice, barley, lentils etc. I like experimenting with sprouting from seeds just for fun. I find watching it germinate and sprout therapeutic. Since it is mostly indoors they tend not to grow much and tend to die due to limited sunlight. Restart as and when it all perished. Mostly edible plants hence the use of diy fertilisers. I had tried someone suggestion here on using of pee but only on money plant. It does help plant growth but need to make sure diluted amount or the money will wilt away. 😆 Coolbriz

Anyway akadama etc will bcome powdery form eventually (need to repotting half a year later) i do not believe in repotting, cos Mother nature has never done it on her plants too I think i will only fertilise at growing mths and this is provided it is at least half-1 yr later upon purchase Anyway, my frens gave me some drop-offs from her succs:https://worldofsucculents.com/euphorbia-inermis-green-crown-medusas-head/ or something that looked like a cactus (but not ) that called Fairy Castle! https://www.facebook.com/groups/355975571530104/permalink/696638380797153/?comment_tracking={"tn"%3A"O"} 2 died on my hands due to sudden overwatering, now i m stingy with water for them and they seemed to adapt very well to pine bark or tree barks!!!! i doubt they r roooted deep in after a mth's plus! nevertheless the remaining 2 survived (& they are still surviving on a dessert cup without Holes at all!! many been saying NO hole is a NO, esp in a gay world, holes are alwys Preferred!) this is a good qn posted by a btm, how do u guys drill on some of the containers yourself? mine dont have a hole some say daiso sells those soldering pen/iron, but i dont rem seeing them at allhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/891786170884225/permalink/2482334828496010/?comment_tracking={"tn"%3A"O"} SS has restocked! but i dont encourage buying from them The soil media normally depends on individual as it depends on location of the plants... mine is roughly 20% of the cactus soil mix then akadama, purmice, volcano rocks and lately, diatomite it’s best that pots used for succulents to have hole, so that it won’t cause it to have root rot due to too much water accumulated by the way, Mother Nature is a natural eco-system by herself... once plants are not in that system, they couldn’t help but to rely on us to help them grow better... do you think so? regardless of how much we dislike those ‘artificial’ stuff, isn’t it created by humankind? 😆 we just have to mindful of what we will be using Coolbriz

Yes, we hve to be take extra cautious to create the unnecessary production. Not that i dislike, I prevented from purchasing them - they sounded so Miraculous (eg grow lights etc) and useful but there are alwys other alternatives. i dislike plastic cups and plastic containers and ..........yet i re-use them for containers for plants and props for Water therapy. I will never forget the lesson i gained from those aunties (who have been farmers in our olden sg days) now they went up to rooftop gardens to help hotels and schools, they taught that: Dont ever pamper the plants, even at areas without love of sunshine or mother earth (no rain for Years) , the roots and the plants will find way to survive somehow! It is humans who kept inventing new items on them, when waste and compost can be easily made by our food waste i kaypo kill my Palm when i fertilise it, never have i fertilise it for the past decade but after kaypo use some fertilisers , it slowly led it to the doors of hell. which is why recycled is never a keyword now, it is about sustainable lifestyle I m still learning , hope members can share more Diatomite is actually diatomaceous earth which is used to protect your plants from crawling insects the one i’m Using is diatomite granules which is mined mineral that is formed at the bottom of lakes and oceans when diatoms(microscopic plankton) died and sink to the bottom and mix with the mud to form this it helps to improve soil structure, increase aeration and improves drainage it’s my first time trying it out as I’ve heard about diatomaceous earth very true about pampering your plants! I have a few incidents of it... though they didn’t die on me but they thrive better without my TLC! LOL
shyc
@Since u r here FYI (for your information), TLC is Tender Loving Care. Nah I don't collect my urine but if I had to, 'it' could have easily fit into the watering bottle. (Just joking) I pee directly into the pot and than give it a shower. This is to prevent my neighbors from smelling my pee if they get close to the plant. Did it only few time to experiment if it really help. I know it did help cos usually the plant would have slowly wilted away over time and I could than give it a pruning and 'recharge' by changing its location to a more sunny area. This time around the leaves are still green and intact. My plants are soil base as I don't want to risk breeding mozzies. All plants wilt as they are living things. As the creepers grow longer, the older leaves would wilt and the stem would get longer and longer. Eventually the newer leaves will be smaller and the plant will look ugly and bare with intertwining stems. That's why over period of time I could be ruthless and cut it all down. Trimming away all the empty long stems. These are culprits that sap away nutrients and eventually forbid the newer leaves to grow bigger or beautiful. I would leave only few stems and this could eventually sprouts new shoots as they get more nutrients. It's a cycle and I had been doing it for years, maintaining that one pot of money plant that my Mom had purchased years ago.

There were various method online but not totally fool proof and the insects/bugs are always strong and make a comeback 😆. Tried spraying with vinegar solution, not much luck. Tried making 'alcohol spray' by soaking cooked rice in a bottle of water and let it ferment. Don't seems to work either. Those who want to experiment with this method must be careful and not close the cap of the bottle too tight. The fermentation process will produce gas and it can explode. Some success spraying mild soapy water, it works but still have some clinging on to dear life on th plants and this are the ones tat will start another army of infestation. Need to repeat process 2-3 days till all are gone. Of course there are the commercial sprays but I like experimenting 😆 blowmenow

These light pink balsam roses had kept me entertained the passed week. Slow blooming, sprouting here and there among the various stems. Than few days back, overjoyed by the one red bloom. As of today I now have twins. 😊 Barely much growth on those Mother of Thousands cuttings. Only one tiny blossom from the Japanese rose. Still trying to figure out why. There were flower buds but it didn't bloom and almost instantly dried up. That one tiny bloom also wilted within half day. Caterpillars exterminate the entire plant overnight. Try the Yates strain or apply chewing insect spray by Horti. Somebody, please enlighten me on the difference between Japanese Rose and Portulaca. Tried sowing on Horti vermiculite, still too fine and susceptible to dampness.

Coolbriz
I believe the same old principle applies to plant’s health and diseases, one being inversely related to the other. The healthier you maintain and keep your plants happy, the less vulnerable they are to diseases or pests. Thanks for sharing the various methods to eradicate pests. For mealybugs, I have also tried mild / diluted soap solution and it is really effective. But there is a need to repeat the treatment until no traces of them is spotted. Be cool, like a breeze... True so far only the mild soap works must must diligently spray every few days. What I do is spray first, than check and trim off those stubborn mealy which still stick to the leaves. As for maintaining I think cannot be over caring 😂 I been too 'careful' and 'caring' for my balsam, quite a few started rotting 😭 But still happy that I have 'changing season'. Thou I sow the seeds all at random and same timing, the light pink had bloom and wilted before the red start blooming so was indeed mesmerising for me. The red doesn't last as Long and the bloom are smaller too.
